Sept 10th - Vigilantes

Located on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. The low-income borough of Lambeth has been largely taken over by London's mutant population and is now known as Mutant Town.

Sept 10th - Vigilantes

Postby Nailah Weaver » Mon Jun 29, 2015 3:42 pm

After a successful but probably boring to read shopping trip in London Nailah and Onyx are huddled on top of a roof in Soho, their shopping bags safely stashed beneath an AC unit. Nailah is standing at the edge of the roof with her hands braced against the parapet, looking over the street. She's put on dark clothes and even a mask, although it's questionable whether that's really to conceal her identity or just because she wants to be as cool as Onyx. Considering she has wings and a tail it's probably more the later.

"Here, I made this for you," Onyx says. She tosses Nailah a utility belt.

"I did not put any weapons in it," Onyx says. "And you do not really need a grappling line, but it has first-aid supplies, tracers, and some smoke bombs."

Onyx moves gracefully through the city. It's a bit more difficult than in Madripoor, she doesn't have the city memorized, but she gets by on natural ability and the occasional use of a grappling line.

It's not long before the two land at a building across from a sketchy looking warehouse. Onyx stops and crouches, scanning for guards and movement around the perimeter of the building.

Nailah has a pretty easy time keeping up with Onyx in the air, gliding high above the rooftops with only the occasional flap of her wings. She lands next to Onyx when they arrive at their destination, eyes peeled for anything helpful she might spot form overhead on her way in.

The warehouse was a large rectangular building. The windows were boarded up, but Nailah could see shadows and lights flickering that indicated people were inside. There were two guards on the outside, one guarding the rear entrance and one guarding the front. Neither was visibly armed.

There were two large trucks in front of the loading dock. A driver leaned against the front door of one and was having a conversation with another man who appeared to be waiting outside the loading bay doors.

A bit more difficult to spot was the lookout, a young man sitting at a bus stop and watching the street. He looks nervous about something.

"What do you see?" Onyx asks Nailah.

"Okay..." she says, taking a deep breath. "Wish me luck." she says and heads for the side of the building before jumping off. She tries to only flap her wings a couple times to not draw attention and get enough altitude so she can glide in a big arc towards the roof of the warehouse. She tries to land as quietly as possible near a window to peer down into the building.

Onyx watches briefly to make sure no one spots Nailah and then drops into the alley and disappears into the shadows.

No one notices Nailah and she makes it to the window safely. From the window, she can see the interior of the warehouse much easier. The warehouse is mostly open space with a large assembly line. About a dozen people are working with chemicals and packaging, make large packages of some sort of drug to ship out. The drug is a white-powder that sparkles in the lamps over the assembly line, but is not easily identifiable beyond that.

The drugs are put into individual packages and then larger bundles. The bundles are packed into various items--backpacks, stuffed animals, and other goods--before being readied for shipment.

Aside from the workers there's a large man overseeing production. He doesn't look like he has a gun, but he's wearing a baggy jacket that could easily conceal a weapon.

Towards the back of the building there are some rooms that look like offices. The blinds are shut and Nailah can't see if anyone is inside from her position.

There are a number of different other details Nailah may or may not spot. Next to some shelves on the other side of the building is the breaker box for the warehouse. The overseer has his back to it, but it is fairly close to him and approaching from that direction might alert him early.

There is a table next to the overseer with an empty chair sitting on the opposite side. There's a beer on that side and an ashtray with a cigarette sitting inside.

The overseer keeps checking the clock and he looks nervous.

Nailah does not spot the breaker box or the details about the table, but she does have an idea. She carefully pries open the window and then fishes a smoke bomb from her new utility belt. She throws it down towards the table and the overseer before throwing herself through the window as well. She keeps her wings closed for a second but then chickens out a little and snaps them open to break her fall a little prematurely. As she's gliding she's aiming at the Overseer with both of her feet, preparing to kick him down and hopefully land on his chest before throwing a punch at his face.

"Huh?"

That's all the Overseer manages to say before he's hit by a bewildering cloud of smoke, followed by Nailah slamming into him. Hard. He falls back in his chair and before he can even shout out, her punch knocks him out.

Meanwhile, the workers have started to panic. A few of them start grabbing bundles and boxes and heading for the doors. Others just stand in place, looking confused. Most of them immediately head for the doors, probably assuming it's a raid by the police.

"What the hell is going on--" Nailah hears. "Oh, fuck!"

There's a blonde woman dressed in a leather jacket standing outside the office. In one hand she's holding a revolver. For a moment, the woman seems to hesitate, unsure of whether to attack Nailah or bolt back into the offices.

Nailah has little time to celebrate her successful takedown and throws herself to the side, trying her best to stay inside the smoke so she doesn't get shot. Most of her attention is focused on the woman with the gun as she looks around. Her eyes fall on one of the drug packages and, still moving through the smoke, runs to scoop it up and throw it at the blonde woman in one quick motion, hoping the package will burst in her face.

Nailah takes her chance and runs around the cloud of drugs, still holding her breath, just in case. She doesn't really have much of a plan beyond getting to the blonde and swiping at the gun-wielding hand with her claws. Step one is very much 'Don't get shot'.

Nailah's trying not to panic now, the gunshot ringing loud in her ears as it ricochets off into the depth of the warehouse. Her heart is hammering in her throat as she aims a kick at the woman's midsection. Just gotta keep pressing, don't give her a chance to recover. she mentally repeats what Onyx has been teaching her.

Towards the office, Nailah sees a man with strawberry-blonde hair and yellow eyes coming out. She has a split second to react before a blast of fire is rushing her way---wait, what? What the hell?

Why is he breathing fire!?

In her shock it takes her a second to even process this, heat rushing at her before she finally has the presence of mind to throw herself to the ground and try to crawl behind something for cover. She scrambles for the nearby table and knocks it over to hide behind it while batting at her smoldering wings.

The new player steps out more into the open. He's a tall, young man with some pretty obvious physical mutations!

"This was a mistake, woman," the man says in heavily-accented English. "Now you face DRAGONWING of the Rising Sons!"

And that's when Onyx is thrown through the loading bay doors. She hits the ground and scrambles to her feet, drawing a throwing disk from her belt.

"Are you alright?" Onyx calls out to Nailah, keeping her eyes towards the door. Something has been beating the shit out of her!

Nailah isn't entirely sure what is scaring her more, the fire-breathing mutant or the fact that somebody outside just threw Onyx through the loading-door. "Y-yeah, I think so!" she shouts back at Onyx. "Watch out for the angry guy, he spits fire!" she says before throwing another bag of drugs. This one isn't nearly aimed as well and is really just a distraction so she can try to get a couple steps to spread her wings and take off. If she can make it up into the air hopefully she'll be in a better position to get to the guy without being set on fire.

Dragonwing knocks the drugs aside with his hand. He looks vaguely annoyed by all of this.

"You are wasting my time and our product," Dragonwing says. Large wings spread out from his back as he follows Nailah into the air. "I am going to take it out of your hide, girl."

Meanwhile, there's a loud whizzing sound as a red-headed girl in ponytails begins skating quickly towards Onyx.

"What's wrong, baby shadow?" Spoilsport asks Onyx mockingly. "Can't keep up?"

Onyx throws the disk but Spoilsport ducks and hits her with a hard right before skating away.

Nailah has to swallow an increasingly large lump in her throat. In retrospect, she should really have seen that coming. The guy called himself Dragonwing afterall. But still, this isn't what she had in mind when she was hoping for a flying-buddy. She tucks one of her wings and turns a tight corner, trying to perhaps outmaneuver Dragonwing so she can try to attack him from the side without getting roasted.

Luckily for Nailah, Dragonwing seems to be reluctant to use his fire-breath for some reason. As he starts to take to the air, she manages to get around him. His wings are powerful, but his body is a bit too heavy and slow. Nailah hits him hard in the side and they both go flying into some shelves. Dragonwing yells angrily and swipes at her with his talons.

Meanwhile, Spoilsport is using hit and run tactics on Onyx, using her superior speed and maneuverability to charge in, hit the girl, and run away. Fortunately, Onyx is a tough nut to crack and Spoilsport isn't doing extreme amounts of damage. Still. It would be nice to hit her.

The impact into the shelves almost knocks the air out of her and she only shakes off the daze in time to barely try and twist out of the way of the swipe, but this is different than a knife and she still takes a nasty rake across her left arm. She lets out a scream and starts frantically kicking at Dragonwing with her clawed feet, mostly just trying to push him (or herself) away to gain some distance from him.

"I--," Dragonwing is interrupted by Nailah kicking at him. "I--Stop---I...."

Her kicks manage to get her some distance from him, so when he finally snaps, she's not quite close enough to get immediately roasted.

"ENOUGH!" Dragonwing shouts, shooting a huge blast of fire out in a rage. A bundle of the drugs are caught up in the blast and go up like a container of gasoline, the fire quickly spreading.

And now everything is burning. Oops.

Onyx closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, trying to center herself and not worry about Nailah. Take care of the problem in front of you.

Don't worry about me, Emily, she remembers being told. You can' not help me until you help yourself.

Spoilsport charges again. And just before she hits, Onyx grabs her arm. Spoilsport's eyes widen.

"Too slow," Onyx says. And then she hits the girl. Hard.

Nailah scrambles to her feet and turns to run away from the spreading flames, trying not to breathe too much because she doesn't feel like taking a lungful of drugs or smoke. She doesn't get very far before her conscience kicks in and she realizes that even if Dragonwing is fireproof, which he very well might not be, then he's probably not immune to all the smoke and drugs. She stops and turns around to try and spot him in the blaze.

Dragonwing doesn't look to good. The guy is doubled over and coughing from all the drug-laced smoke. He also seems to be having some trouble maintaining his physical mutations, as his wings and claws are quickly fading.

In the distance, faint sirens can be heard.
