International Security Summit - Exterior

Located on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. The low-income borough of Lambeth has been largely taken over by London's mutant population and is now known as Mutant Town.

International Security Summit - Exterior

Postby Jezabelle Sherlock » Mon Mar 21, 2016 11:31 pm

Commuters riding the underground through London would have noticed a slightly different composition within the train cars than what was considered normal. Citizens of Lambeth were riding the rails in far greater numbers than normal, as were students from the various surrounding universities, all departing at stations within walking distance of the controversial summit. Already large groups of protesters had gathered in areas surrounding the building, with London police providing a buffer zone between mutants rights groups and the attending delegates, as well as anti-mutant protesters. Minor conflicts had taken place earlier in the day between the groups, mainly at the exits of the undergrounds where supporters could be more easily identified. Quick crackdowns by London police coupled by "escort" groups coordinated by organizers helped to diminish these conflicts and ferry picketers to their proper corners. The sky was grey and overcast, with occasional mists dampening the various protest signs being held aloft.

Jezabelle was one of the faces in the crowd. Actually she was several of them, with two of her selves running escorts to and from the underground while others were busy speaking with curious members of the public and handing out flyers, most of which were related to the university or to the various rights groups and services available to struggling mutants.

It's not even the summit proper yet (actual heads of state are expected to arrive tomorrow), but delegates are already at the Langham Hotel, part of the preparations and preliminary talks. The security presence surrounding the hotel is ridiculous. Armed police patrols and canine units are patrolling the fence that makes up the perimeter while several riot control teams are clearly visible positioned around the hotel, even from the distance at which the protests are being kept. Big, visible signs reading "No Mutants Beyond This Point" do little to calm the pro-mutant side. Tensions are high and here and there bottles can be seen sailing but so far neither side (nor the police) has escalated things beyond that.

As one of the Jezabelles hands a curious bystander a pamphlet she spots a blonde woman moving through the groups of mutants with a determined look on her face. She'd just be another one of the crowd but a couple moments later another one, at least 100 yards away can see the same woman, wearing a different outfit, come out of the tube station, waving Jez off when she moves in to offer to escort her to the main protest group, instead cutting across the street towards the human side and the counter-protestors.

Jezabelle might have attributed the coincidence to the two women being twins, but the fact that they weren't travelling together caught her attention. Perhaps it was intuition, or perhaps it was pessimism and thinking that anything that might go wrong would go wrong. Whatever her reason, Jez had two of her selves follow the women at a distance of roughly twenty meters.

The women seem to be looking for something, though it's hard to really follow what. Or who. Both of them seem to be glancing through the crowd, occasionally focusing their eyes on one person or another. The one in the human crowd seems to be the first to find her target, although there's no telling why, really. She's just staring at the unremarkable protesting human. After a couple of moments the man's face seems to subtly change, his expression hardening, his anger seeming to set in deeper as his hand tightly grips his protest sign. After maybe a minute or two the woman seems satisfied and moves on, looking for another target.

Meanwhile the one among the mutant crowd seems to be more careful, having found a young man with glowing eyes to focus on, but among this crowd she seems to be more careful, taking more time and being very cautious. The effects on her target however are the same. The mutant's eyes flare ever so slightly as muscles tense and angry frowns deepen.

Either girl alone weren't acting particularly suspicious there wasn't anything that really set them apart from the rest of the crowd; if they hadn't been identical Jez likely wouldn't have noticed them at all. But now that her curiosity had been raised she couldn't help but notice how nervous the girl in the pro-mutant group was acting, which influenced how closely she watched the one who slipped in with the "human" crowd. The idea that two sisters would be attending two separate sides of a protest didn't really sit right with her, but they weren't causing any sort of trouble. Jezabelle's pawns moved closer to their targets, approaching from behind in an attempt to not arouse too much suspicion, until they were close enough to speak with little chance of being overheard.

"You've missed your friend, she's on the other side." The two Jez's spoke identical lines at the same time; a test to see what kind of reaction she'd get. After all, they really could have been two sisters who arranged to meet but wires got crossed....

Both women turn their heads towards Jez, which is to be expected, but for just a split second they seem to glance off to the side, towards their counterpart and their expression shifts ever so slightly.

"Aren't you a nosy one." she can hear a unified voice echo in her mind.

As part of her abilities, Jezabelle had some limited telepathy. Each of her "puppets" did not have their own minds but were an extension of herself, controlled by her. This made her very receptive to telepathic messages directed toward them or herself, though she could not respond in kind. Which led to a bit of a one-sided conversation.

"Curiosity killed the cat." Said the Jez in the anti-mutants crowd.
"But satisfaction brought it back." The other Jez finished the quote to the blonde woman. So far they hadn't made any sort of aggressive move, the girls were just... there. Likely where they were not wanted. She had no proof that they were up to something, but why would a mutant be hanging out amongst anti-mutant protesters? Except for her puppet of course.

"What can we say? You caught our attention. I'm just here to make sure that our voice is heard, and to take care of any problems that might arise."
"We're not going to have any problems, are we?"

"Oh, not with me, no. But no one's ever changed the world with flyers. You have to send a message." both of them respond telepathically. Jez might feel the woman trying to figure out the girls in front of her, trying to trace the connections between the puppets even as the one in the human crowd suddenly yells out.

"Mutant! There's a mutant here!" she points at Jez, backing away with an excellent fake expression of fear on her face as the crowd around them turns their eyes towards Jez. Some of them seem curious, some of them angry. At least until one of the human suddenly clutches her head and falls to the ground, screaming. That's when the curiosity turns to fear and the anger turns to rage. Some people rush to the fallen woman to help, others just stare, but a not insignificant amount of people ball their fists and grip their signs, taking a step towards the perceived threat that is Jez.

Jez really shouldn't have been surprised at how the situation had been turned around on her. Instead of bringing the matter to the attention of some of the group leaders she had gone in alone to test the waters, which she was finding to be well over her head. Her pawns had no fear of being taken over, they had no minds to warp or possess, but they did make for a convenient bridge, guiding the telepathic probe toward their source. And for the puppet in the mutant group, that bridge was much shorter. Things were about to get worse, and she wasn't sure if there was anything she could do to lessen the fallout. But she could at least go down fighting.

"Stay out of her head, telepath!" Whether the blonde woman in the anti-mutant crowd had expected it or not Jez couldn't say, but the petite pawn lunged at Trinity, hoping to get a few licks in before the mob fell upon her. If she was lucky they'd both go down and get swarmed in the confusion.

Meanwhile on the other side of the pavilion, the other Jez puppet was calling out for security. And Trinity might see two familiar-looking girls pushing through the crowd to get closer to her; one of whom had an ever-increasingly strong mental bond to the pawn with whom she'd been talking.

The Trinity in the middle of the erupting chaos very quickly shifts her full attention to Jez, though there's not enough room for her to avoid taking at least one punch from Jez. If that was all she had she'd probably be in at least some trouble, telepathy being hard to focus on properly in that kind of situation. Unfortunately there are two more of her (in a way) and the one safely sitting in the mutant crowd seamlessly takes over manipulating the crowd. People around the attacked Trinity come to her help, trying to usher her backwards while she smugly wipes the blood from her lip. Meanwhile those humans who were most prone to violence even before Trinity nudged them along start grabbing at Jez, throwing punches that pepper her arms and shoulders, occasionally the back of her head. In the chaos it's hard to do much beyond flailing, so they don't hurt as bad as straight punches would but there's a lot of them.

"I was looking for unrest to spark outrage among the pro-mutant side I didn't think I'd be served a martyr on a silver platter. Sorry, kid, sometimes you just have to take one for the team."

Both Trinitys try moving through the crowd away from the brawl that's breaking out as well as the two Jezabelles trying to reach her. She only has so much attention to spare to make people move out of her way so she's mostly shoving and squeezing her way through the masses while Jez keeps pace with her.

Above them the noise of a helicopter is getting louder as the news time brings it down a little to get a better shot at the violence that has broken out in the human crowd.

Re: International Security Summit - Exterior

Postby Jezabelle Sherlock » Thu Mar 24, 2016 6:14 am

Jezabelle had never really taken self-defense; even if she had, her pawn wouldn't have been able to defend herself from the clumsy shower of blows that rained down on her. Things were getting too intense and she was quickly overwhelmed. It hadn't been a trap persea, but it'd become one as soon as she opened her mouth. With the news cameras being trained on the conflict she couldn't afford to be recognized and placed as the cause of the conflict, and she certainly wasn't going to be walking out of that crowd. There was only one option; she'd have to sacrifice her pawn to save the queen. With just a moment's hesitation Jez severed the link between herself and her puppet.

In the midst of the melee the girl stopped resisting; she stopped moving entirely. She didn't go limp ,she just froze in place. A strike to her shoulder resulted in a loud snapping sound, the colour fading from her clothing and features as deep cracks spider webbed over her form. Before another hit could land the form collapsed into a small pile of black dust, a few kilograms of carbon were all that remained, stirred up into a little dust devil by a sudden puff of hydrogen and oxygen gases.

Jezabelle hated ridding herself of her copies that way. Severing the connection was very stressing on her mind and influenced her control over her other puppets. It also rendered her physically weaker as she suddenly lost a portion of her mass. It was like a fleet of ships; it was equally as strong when travelling in a close grouping as it was when spread across a wide area; but losing a ship weakened the entire fleet. Her and her copies had to stop for a moment to recuperate, finding it more difficult to press through the crowd of mutants and supporters as they tried to follow the retreating Trinity.

The ring of people looks stunned, confused and some even have the decency to look horrified. Especially those not involved or manipulated by Trinity don't seem very happy although worry and fear. Not that Jez is around to witness that, but people start talking and rumors of what happened start spreading through the crowd. Trinity doesn't seem to be actively trying to spread the word, both of the ones Jez has a rough idea of where they are seem more focused on moving through the crowds.

Regardless of how, word of mouth eventually spreads to the mutant crowd and by then the rumor claims that the humans beat and trampled a poor mutant girl to death. The fact that a news helicopter is hovering lower than usual above the human side of the protest seems to lend it enough credence that the crowd is getting angry. Somewhere close to one of the Jezabelles a bolt of red energy shoots into the air and explodes, casting everything in a red sheen for a second. In the free area between the crowds and the hotel the riot control units seem to take that as their cue to mobilize...

"No! Don't retaliate! This is all happening because they're afraid of us! If we resort to violence we'll only confirm their fears and make things worse! Show them that we are better than this!"

Jezabelle's cries for pacifism were being drowned out by the growing calamity of the other protesters around her as panic and anger washed over the crowd. So many people were shouting at once that it was impossible to understand any of them, with the exception of the group leaders shouting over their megaphones.

Jez manages to get the attention of a couple of people here and there, in part because they were trying similar things already. But overall it's like trying to shout into a storm. There's a distinct air of danger spreading through the crowd as people ready their powers, even if most of them do simply to defend themselves. One of the people whose attention she got, a young woman with blue-blonde hair, reaches into the pocket of her jeans and gestures at Jez as she rummages around inside until her arm is disappearing inside of it all the way up to her elbow somehow.

"Hang on!" she tells her with kind of a resigned whelp look on her face, her arm appearing from the breast-pocket of the flannel-shirt of one of the megaphone wielding people and rudely slapping the thing from his hands and towards Jez. "Better than nothing, yeah?" she shouts.

Meanwhile near the fence keeping the protesters at bay the riot squad is lining up behind their shields and the first tear gas grenade flies, only to be obliterated in mid-air by a blast of energy from the crowd, gust of wind whipping the spreading cloud of gas away before it can settle. It seems to specifically be blowing away from either crowd as if being purposefully being directed that way. Not all mutant sin the crowd seem to be itching for a fight.

Jezabelle fumbled to catch the megaphone that was tossed to her, managing to clutch it to her chest without dropping it. In just moments her expression changed from panic, to confusion, to the sudden giddiness that comes when one receives an unexpected act of kindness. The girl felt like she could burst into tears right then and there, though that might have been due in part to the stress she was under, managing only a soft "thank you" and a smile before steeling herself. Her puppets were returning to her, the task of handing out flyers no longer a pressing concern. Two of them remained, the trio working together to place the girl on their shoulders to put her above the eyeline of the crowd. With their backs to the oncoming riot police, she began speaking into the megaphone again.

"Passive resistance! Do not attack them! The media wants to show the world how violent and dangerous we are, don't give them what they want! Keep yourselves and others safe but do not strike out! We will be kind when it is difficult to be kind, we will forgive those who would not forgive us, because together we are strong. We have nothing to fear, because we are in the right!"

"They ganged up on one of us!"

"I heard she teleported out!"

"No they trampled someone!"

It's almost impossible to make out the individual responses from the crowd, but at the very least Jez has the attention of a significant chunk of people and they're complaining at worst. Unfortunately it seems to fall on deaf ears when it comes to the mutant with the glowing eyes and hands. He slowly rises into the air above the crowd and almost immediately a burst of water is aimed his way. He raises his hands, firing red bolts into the stream that explode and scatter the water harmlessly across the crowd. He keeps firing in anger, driving back the water until it hits the water-thrower itself, tearing it out of the truck it's on.

Several mutants seem to take this as their cue to start rioting but they're in the minority. The human crowd meanwhile is busy dispersing in a panic as the rest of the riot squads open fire with additional water-throwers and tear grenades. The news helicopter meanwhile is repositioning itself, seeming to focus their shots on the big passive group of mutants caught in the anti-riot measures.

"Someone please restrain that man and get him out of here now!"

Jez was barking orders into the crowd like a general commanding her troops, gesturing toward the hovering mutant who had blasted the water cannon. There was no way she could even address the attacked mutant on the human side, the time needed to do so was a luxury she didn't have. Things had gone exactly the opposite of what she had hoped, though the results are pretty much what she had expected. The riot police were already reaching the fencing and tear gas grenades were landing in the crowd despite some mutants best efforts. She had to face reality; if this protest continued it was going to devolve into an outright riot or in multiple arrests and beatings.

"Everyone, listen up!" Her voice choked in her throat for a moment before she steeled herself. "Everyone fall back! Disperse if you have to! We will organize and regroup when things calm down. Fighting will only hurt our cause! Getting arrested means you won't be here later when we need you! This isn't a battle lost, this is a strategic retreat, and our voices will be heard!"

While her megaphone and lofty perch garnered her more attention from the crowd, she also garnered more from the riot police as well, and her back was to them.

People generally seem to listen to Jez. Not that it took much for people to move away from clouds of tear gas and water throwers, but it appears to have convinced at least a bunch of people to not fight back. Some still do and try to make a stand along with the floating guy but no one seems to be willing to try and drag them away. ((unless someone else wants to take this opportunity to join the thread))

Unfortunately with everyone around her beginning to move away Jez is starting to look like one of the people still making a stand and one of the water throwers fires right at the pyramid of Jezabelles.

Jez might not have had any precognitive powers but she still should have seen that coming. The girl was so focused on trying to ensure that others didn't get hurt that she wasn't thinking about her own safety. With a yelp the pyramid came tumbling down atop itself, the crowd around her fleeing from the water and tear gas. Wet and stunned, her remaining puppets did their best to protect her by throwing themselves on top of her, taking the brunt of the footfalls of the retreating crowd. By the time most of the nearby protesters had dispersed the injured pawns had joined with her, leaving a soggy and disoriented Jez to be picked up by the riot police once they started to filter in through the barricade.

When she's yanked up (by no less than four people even), it's into a scene of utter chaos. Tear gas is still floating around the general area while a small handful of mutants is having it out with the riot police. Which probably explains why Jez is being handled rather roughly, being pushed and shoved along while someone zip-ties her hands behind her back. As she's being pulled away a huge explosion blows away a lot of the gas settling over the area, throwing a number of police in riot gear through the air, seeming relatively free of injury, all things considered. The ones escorting Jez are thrown off their feet along with her.

From her vantage point on the ground Jez can see a young mutant standing in the epicenter of the explosion, panting and shaking with anger when someone throws a grenade or canister of some sort at her feet. The woman stops it with her foot and laughs when the thing suddenly explodes into a bright-blue foam that engulfs her foot. She tries to hop away but finds the foam has glued her foot to the ground while it continues to expand until it covers most of her body.

The police is quick to recover, yanking Jez to her feet once more, though this time it's considerably less comfortable with her arms tied behind her back. Through the general chaos she can see an armored transport pulling up to gather up any arrested protesters. And that's how Jez ends up in the back of a police transport along with two police-men as well as a chunk of foam with the head and one shoulder of the black-haired explosive mutant, an unconscious young man with the bottom sleeves of his shirt singed off by his own energy blasts as well as the young woman who had thrown Jez the megaphone. She looks fairly unharmed and more like she surrendered at the earliest opportunity to avoid being knocked around. She still has her hands tied behind her back though as she gives Jez a smile that falls somewhere between apologetic and 'Whelp, shit happens.'

Initially Jezabelle had resisted the arrest, but the loss of one of her pawns had weakened her both physically and mentally to the point where she didn't have much fight left in her. Once it was clear that she wasn't getting out of this she co-operated, though not without a considerable amount of verbal protest at their rough treatment. It might have been her first time being arrested in the UK, but from how she was acting this was not her first rodeo. Not that she was looking forward to the next 48 hours, but at the very least she'd witnessed what the London police had at their disposal when it came to subduing mutants; handy information that.

"Hey! I'm not resisting! I can get in on my own."

The cops didn't believe her, or didn't care, as they shoved her down onto the bench and strapped her in. The uncertainty was over at least, there was some comfort in having a rough idea of how the police process would play out. She let out a deep sigh and leaned against the back of the wagon, taking in her fellow passengers. She even gave a little smile to the girl sitting across from her, the one with the magical pockets.

"Hey, thanks for your help earlier. I'd give daps but... I guess I'll have to owe you one." She sat up a little straighter to get a better look at the young woman caught in the foam. "Hey, are you alright? You're not having any trouble breathing or anything, right?"

"She's already tried to blow it up since they threw us in here. It's some kinda special resin." the magical-pocket woman chimes in. From the tone of her voice it seems like the two are familiar with each other.

"Yeah. Stuff's tough." laser-guy supplies but shuts up when one of the guards glares at him. He grits his teeth and everyone in the car can feel the faint hum of gathering energy for just a second.

"Hey, if you don't cut it out you can experience it for yourself." the guard informs the young man, holding up another one of the foam-grenades.

"Well you're no fun." she pouts. Apparently she'd been hoping for Jez and her copies to help since she doesn't make a move for the remainder of the ride, under many angry glares from the foam-encased girl.

Eventually they're shoved into what's basically a drunk tank, although the bars have been reinforced with what's some kind of clear hardened plastic between the bars. Nowhere near the holding cells in the Point, but at least marginally secured for locking up mutants. Bit by bit everyone from the transport as well as a couple more mutants get shoved in as they're being processed. Quite a few of the people involved in the process seem to try and be intimidating about it, although the longest they can hold them is 24 hours and even then their charge is not one that'd warrant them staying in here, even if they tried to stick them with some of the heavier charges being brandished around.

"Well, that was fun." the blue-haired girl complains when she finally makes it into the cell. "Definitely not a waste of time at all."

Jez rubbed her wrists, looking a little sheepish.

"I'm sorry, I'm just not good at fighting. One good shock or a hit to me and it doesn't matter how many copies I have running around, I'd be totally useless. Honestly, I was hoping you could grab his taser and knock him out... but I don't think you can unlock the doors from the inside. I guess we could've added destruction of police property to the list though."

She leaned against the cell wall and let herself sink to the floor. To her, there wasn't anything to do but wait.

"If it makes you feel any better, I can use my call to get ahold of my dad. He might know some barristers here who owe his firm a favour. I honestly don't know if the University has a good lawyer or not."

"Well then, somebody's got connections. You're from the school in Maldon? They even got fancy cells there. Uhm, or so I hear." she adds with a grin that already says she knows Jez won't buy that.

Jez was a little busy mentally kicking herself for earlier. How was it that she could bark orders and give commands like a general at one moment, then shy away from a chance at escape when she could potentially outnumber her opponent ten to one? Maybe she had more confidence in others than she did herself. So doing her best to use her connections to help these people might redeem her a little bit. She was lost in the self-loathing for a bit before she realized she was being talked to.

"Huh? Oh, yeah, I guess so. Just lucky I guess." She looked up at the young woman, not really feeling like getting back to her feet just yet. She shrugged at the cells comment, right now who was she to judge, they were both in one. "I wouldn't know, most've the ones I've been in have been like this. But yeah, I go to the Maldon school. I was actually passing out flyers for it. I'd offer you one, but..." She pats her pockets, everything she'd been carrying having been confiscated by the police.

"S'cool, I know about it." she chuckles. "So this isn't your first rodeo, huh. Doubt they're gonna keep us here for long, 'specially if you know people. I'd feel bad about owing you one, but hey, I'll take it. Dunno if you wanna lean yourself out of the window for Char, she's... got a tendency to take things a little too far. They might try to nail her with assault or somesuch." she says, jerking her thumb at the black-haired girl sitting at the other end of the cell, still picking remains of the foam off of herself with mediocre success.

"Hey, we gotta stick together, right? Look out for each other?" Jez sat up a little straighter.

"I can't promise anything, other than I'll do my best to help."

It's the least I can do, since this is partially my fault.

"That's the idea. Though I think some people just like looking for trouble..." she says, lieing down on one of the few benches in the room and stretching out with her hands behind her head. "I'm Zephyr, by the way."

"Well for some people, trouble just finds them." Jez was pretty comfortable where she was but she scooted a little closer to the bench; she worried some of the other detainees might get annoyed with her if she spoke too loudly.

"Jezabelle. Cool name."

"Thanks, came up with it all by my lonesome. And no kidding, sister. Sometimes you just gotta push back till you end up, well, here usually."

"Me too, sort of. Though if you mean an alias, some people call me Crowd. It's not pretty but it gets the point across."

She let out a little sigh. "Yeah. The trick is, knowing when to push and knowing when to back down. The news will have a field day with the footage of folks using their powers. No one will mention how the riot police only moved on us despite the Flats being the first ones to turn violent."

Before Zephyr can reply the loud honking noise of someone entering the cell area sounds and a police officer steps in.

"Jezabelle Sherlock? Someone posted bail for you." he says with a jerking head motion urging the person whose name he called to step forward.

"Well, it looks like this is my stop." Jezabelle pushed herself to her feet and dusted herself off. She did her best to give the others a reassuring smile. "See you on the outside."

She wished she could be more reassuring, or offer more help, but it really all hinged on favours and friendships between people with varying levels of interest in mutant rights. Her father would stick his neck out, sure, but he was thousands of miles away; whether or not he knew anyone a little closer who would do the same was more than she could say. She stepped toward the officer, calm and collected, a harmless little bunny.

When the police officer leads her out of the cell area and to the entrance of the station the person she sees waiting for her is not anybody familiar she might have expected. She might have seen him before, if she watches the news enough, but while he's a reporter he's not quite that high profile enough that everyone knows him. He has dark blonde hair, cropped short in what's probably usually stylish but now looks pretty ruffled.

"Hey. Jezabelle, right? Is it okay if I call you Jezabelle or would you prefer Miss Sherlock? I'm Theo Baxter, I'm a reporter for BBC Four. We were covering the protests earlier. You know, the one that landed you here." he adds with bit of a sheepish smile. He sounds fairly charming, even if his voice comes across as a little rehearsed like that of someone who is used to sounding nice and friendly for a living on top of being, well, British.

Jezabelle had a look of confusion for a moment before she spoke to the older man. "O-oh. I had expected a lawyer... or a barrister, or whatever they're called over here." She composed herself, trying to look less like someone who'd just spent the past few hours in a paddy wagon and police processing.

"Jezabelle is fine, though if we're on the record then Miss Sherlock will suffice. I'm guessing that I have you to thank for posting my bail, Mr. Baxter? Is that something that reporters do here?"

"Not with any regularity. But it's not every day that you're in the right place at the right time. We got most of your stand at the protest on camera. I thought it was pretty obvious the police were hitting innocent protesters all over the place and you, well, stood out. I was hoping I could get an exclusive interview."
