The Ritz Casino

Located on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. The low-income borough of Lambeth has been largely taken over by London's mutant population and is now known as Mutant Town.

As much as arriving in a regular cab does not fit in with the rest of the clientele, when Miriam steps out wearing a fabulous black, diamond-studded dress she seems to blend right in. She still doesn't have the money or the name to go with it, but she confidently makes her way towards the doors just as well.

Miriam smirks to herself and runs her hands down her dress to straighten it. Not that it needs to be.

Walking into the Casino she takes a moment to just take in the atmosphere of the quiet murmurs of conversation and the spinning of the roulette wheel before taking what little cash she has to exchange for the smallest chip the place has at a hundred Pounds.

"Oh I do believe so, yes..." she says with just a hint of clueless ignorance in her voice. Picking up on the man's belittling condescension isn't fun but it helps her with playing into it, like an instant feedback to the inflection in her voice. "Suit yourself," the man said. "Don't worry, I'm sure we'll help you out through all this as it comes along."

The initial cards were dealt. Miriam, sitting in the last seat, was the last one to get her cards--a five of clubs and a six of spades. Nothing super-exciting, but at least they were connected.

The nine men at the table looked down at their own cards with varying levels of poker face, depending on their varied levels of drunk.

Well, let's go around the circle and meet our players, shall we! None of them seemed particularly thrilled with their hands.

Assuming Miriam's in seat 10...

Seat one held an old man in a tweed jacket and bow-tie--a college professor, perhaps? He seemed to be a little tipsy, making him a little easier to read--Miriam got the distinct impression of at least an Ace as he tossed in some chips.

Seat two had the longest beard she had seen in quite some while. He was disgusted with his hand, and threw it away.

Seat three had someone Miriam might be tempted to call Lord Smarmington of the Berkshire Valley Smarmingtons, complete with monocle and pipe. She didn't get a chance to read him, as he too folded.

Seat four was drunk as drunk could be, and you almost didn't need to be a telepath to read his cards the way he was sloppily lifting them up. He knocked some chips into the middle, with an Ace of Clubs and the Ten of Spades and a vicious itch on his left side.

Seat five was the rotund man with the cigar who was being oh so nice to Miriam. Because he was being so nice, he wasn't putting up any sort of mental fight whatsoever--he also had an Ace and a Ten, and went in as well.

Had seat six looked at his cards yet? Maybe he kept his cards on Miriam's breasts, because that's where the lion's share of his attention was focused, for sure. Miriam probably wouldn't want to linger on his brain too much, but he slid some chips in with what felt like a sub-par, but not unplayable, hand--something low needing some luck.

Seat seven...seat seven, in his shades and straw hat, looked almost like an anacronsym. Miriam...wasn't getting anything from him? That was odd...he pushed chips in as well.

Seat eight was flop-sweating, clearly nervous as he reached for his chips, knocking some of them accidentally off his stack as he apologized. His head was filled with constant reminders of the rules and values of the cards, making his Queen of Diamonds and Two of Hearts stand out clearly in Miriam's mind.

Seat nine...she might recognize seat nine if she was into hard rock. Which, you know, she wasn't--but he was the up-and-coming singer of an up-and-coming band, wearing up-and-coming leather, and holding an up-and-coming hand. It was just the impression of a fairly solid hand Miriam got, as he put chips in.

To summarize, in the pot:
College Professor (with an Ace?)
Drunken Master (Ace of Clubs, 10 of Hearts)
"Polite" Rotund Cigar Guy (Ace-10)
Horny Mcgee (low-quality long shot)
Shades and Hat (???)
Newbie McFlopSweat (Queen of Diamonds, 2 of Hearts)
Rock Star (fairly solid hand)

Not fantastic, all things considered. Especially with someone at the table she failed to get any read on. She felt she could probably manipulate either one of them if she really had to (and she really hoped she wouldn't have to in the case of Number Six) but Straw Hat? Maybe once more people folded and she could concentrate more on him. For now she goes along with the pot, wanting to see some more cards and mentally preparing herself to knock some people out by leveraging their own reactions to the Flop.

And here came the flop!

...Three of hearts, jack of spades, three of clubs. Miriam still could hit a runner-runner straight or flush, but she didn't really get a lot of help there. I mean, she's got a pair of threes! But so does everyone else.

If there was a silver lining, no one seemed particularly thrilled with that flop, either.

The pot was checked around, no one else taking any action--everyone else wanted to see another card, leaving Miriam as the last to decide...

Miriam tries her best to feign pleasant surprise and instead tries to push her own disappointment to reinforce everyone else's. Focusing on the people sitting on (she assumes) Aces.

Not the Flop you were looking for, don't overestimate Aces, it's such an easy trap to fall into, don't look like a chump in front of the pretty newbie...

She way too deliberately puts the rest of her money in. Only so much she can leverage with what little she has but maybe it'll do to bully a couple of people out and letting the raise seem like obvious confidence might help.

Miriam could definitely feel like her wave of disappointment was more or less working--especially on those more or less prone to be disappointed already. For a general attack, it seemed to work quite well!

The College Professor was the first to throw his cards in the muck, followed quickly by the Drunk and the rotund man who had been the first to talk to her when she sat down.

"Quite a bold move from the little lady," he smirked. "Well, I suppose it would be ungentlemanly of me to take you out this early; we've hardly gotten a chance to know one another," he chortled.

"Your face is turning red, Jerry," the man in the straw hat said, smiling at the rotund man. "You wouldn't be embarrassed to be shown up by the 'little lady', are you?" he laughed, dumping his own cards. Miriam still couldn't get a read on him.

"Nothing...nothing could be further from the truth," Jerry blustered, looking away.

Everyone else stayed in--the lech, the newbie and the rock star--but none of the three had the guts to raise Miriam after that.

The next card came down--the Eight of Hearts. Miriam needed a seven to make a straight, but the flush had been, well, flushed out.

The lech seemed annoyed with the card--Miriam didn't need telepathy to tell THAT. The newbie seemed more mildly disappointed, but not-yet panicky. The rock star to Miriam's right, on the other hand, seemed fairly pleased with the card.

Action was passed around until the Rock Star raised, forcing the other two out of the pot. The dealer was getting ready to reveal the last card. Miriam was all in, and couldn't do much. Well, legally, anyway.

Still in:
Rock Star (fairly solid hand, and seeming somewhat pleased with what's on the board.)

Postby Miriam Bell » Tue Aug 23, 2016 9:24 pm

"Oh please, who'd be embarrassed by some beginner's luck, right?" Miriam smiles politely. Overall this seemed to be going fairly well. Until Mr. Rockstar decides to push the remaining people out himself. But with only one person left she could afford to concentrate on him a little harder. Still, if she wants to make something happen she needs more money, even if she knew the man's cards. At this point, if they're better than hers he's going to beat her. There's the easy option of just flirting with the creep and borrowing money but she'd rather die than sink that low. Which leaves her with very little options but to hope. Unless...

She pushes her mind into Rockstar's hard. If she could figure out what's in his hand, she'd know if he has the winning hand before anybody else and if he does, well, Rockstars aren't known for their impulse control, maybe she could spark him to do something inappropriate enough to get thrown out. There, a waitress... Everyone's probably just waiting for him to do something stupid anyway. Smacking her ass and grabbing a drink from her tray would be exactly what everyone here would expect him to do anyway. Why not put on a show, right?

Focusing on the Rockstar, she would get...

...well, quite a lot of music to start with. Not her taste, but this stuff would likely be stuck in her head for a while.

"I've gotta tell you somethin, this phe-nom-eh-non, I had to put it in a song, and I'm like, woah...".

Dreadful.

The cards were at the forefront of his mind, thankfully, so she wouldn't have to dig TOO to hard to get at 'em--he had bupkis.

Well, he had the King of Hearts and the Nine of Clubs, meaning he had a grand total of...a king. No pairs, no straights, no nothin'. Miriam could win with a five, or a six, or a seven, but anything else would be a win for the rocker.

Miriam could feel the skeeviness of the rocker as she directed his attention towards the waitress--seeing her as just another piece of meat, another possible conquest. Miriam could feel that, and could intensify it, the feeling sliding both ways down the link.

The final card....was the six of clubs! Giving Miriam a pair of sixes, and the win!

"Your 'beginner' seems to have luck on her side," Straw Hat said, as the cards were revealed, returning Miriam's flirtatious smile. "You'll have to keep an eye on her."

The Rock Star seemed far more interested in the bum of the waitress approaching their table than the results of the hand, and had to be reminded to slide a decent portion of chips Miriam's way--Miriam quadrupled-up! 400 pounds. Not bad for five minutes' work, and she didn't even have to cheat. Much.

A few non-interesting hands passed back and forth, with Miriam getting a better feel for the state of the game. She was definitely drawing a lot of attention--from passers-by, admiring her dress, from the lech and the rock star, admiring...what was underneath the dress...and from straw hat, who seemed amused by a private joke.

A new hand started, with action moved around to Miriam.

The drunk in seat four, acting first, tossed his cards away. One actually flipped face-up for a moment, showing a flash of red; he was far from Miriam's biggest threat.

The cigar-smoking rotund man had quieted down some after being embarrassed by Miriam earlier, but he was in on this one, going in with an Ace and an Eight. How was he always being dealt an ace? Sassafrassa.

The lech whispered something to the waitress, who walked over to Miriam and handed her a cocktail. "Compliments of the man in Seat Six." Other than the waves of lust headed her direction, Miriam got the impression of, like, one live card or something--not terrible, but not exactly a high-quality hand.

Straw Hat scatched his chin a little bit, and raised the pot. "Let's see if we can't make things a little more interesting." he said, putting in a few hundred pounds.

Nervous guy, nervously, peaked at his hand again, and hesitated. "Um, er, uh..." he said, flustered, and then, after a moment's hesitation, seemed to find a new air of confidence as he pushed some ships in. Miriam got a clear view of his hand--the Queen of Hearts and Ten of Diamonds; not a bad hand at all.

Rock star mumbled something profane and tossed his own cards away, moving action to Miriam. She had the Jack of Hearts...and the Six of Hearts. A couple hearts, and a face card, with action to her...

Miriam roundly ignores the lech, but does take his drink, slipping the waitress a chip as a tip before taking a sip. "Thank you." she tells the waitress. This was getting mildly annoying, even with free drinks, but much more vexing was Straw Hat and his imperviousness to her telepathy. No matter, she has a decent hand and matches his bid. It'd be stupid not to at least look at the Flop.

The raise--and subsequent call--was enough to chase out Longbeard in Seat 2, Lord Smarmington in Seat 3 and the lech in Seat 6.

The college professor, on the other hand, made the call--Miriam got the impression of at least a King just from surface-level thoughts. Her favorite man, rotund, cigar-smoking Jerry, also stayed in.

The flop came. King of Diamonds, Four of Clubs, Ten of Hearts. No one seemed particularly thrilled with that set, and it certainly did Miriam few favors--though she could get runner-runner hearts to make a flush, or a queen and an ace or nine to make a straight.

Straw Hat looked at Miriam and smiled. "Excuse me, but I can't quite seem to get you out of my head. Have we met before?"
. He raised the pot yet again, looking to chase some people out, but the Newbie wasn't budging quite yet, calling the bet.

Still in:
College Professor (with a King?)
Jerry, the Rotund Cigar Guy (Ace-8, and missed the flop entirely)
Shades and Hat (???)

Miriam matches and raises the pot herself, her mind sharply focused on the College Professor who, Straw Hat aside, seems like the biggest threat to her right now. It's a simple bluff, but if she latches on to the doubt that creates she might be able to ramp it up to the point of making him lose faith in his pair of Kings.

"If we did it is slipping my mind at the moment, Mr..." she answers Straw Hat and tries to lead him into introducing himself. At this point it's obvious he somehow knows what she's capable of on some level at least. Did he have the same idea as her?

"Dashwood. Francis Dashwood.

Tell me, dear, have you ever been to Las Vegas?"

The college professor reached for some chips....and then brought his hand back, deep in thought. Finally, reluctantly, he tossed his hand into the muck! He was shortly thereafter joined by the lovely cigar-smoking Jerry, who had missed the pot entirely.

The next card came...Jack of Clubs! That paired Miriam's jack, but it also gave hope to the newbie, who could now make a straight with either an Ace or a Nine. And then, of course, there was Straw-hat Dashwood, who slid yet more chips into the middle, called once again by the newbie.

"Miriam Bell. And no, I haven't had the pleasure, I'm afraid. I hear it's rather... flashy though."

At this point Miriam is too annoyed and too curious to not see this through, which is probably a bad idea but she wants to pull one over on Strawhat. She's relatively certain she could force the newbie out regardless of the final card if she absolutely had to. Or enact the emergency plan of pushing the Rockstar to make a scene and disturb the table after all. She matches the raise, never taking her eyes off Mr. Dashwood.

"Oh believe me, this one is one of a kind." she says, suddenly getting an idea. "Will, can you make yourself change colors?
