It Is A Mystery...

Located on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. The low-income borough of Lambeth has been largely taken over by London's mutant population and is now known as Mutant Town.

It Is A Mystery...

Postby Basil Benson » Wed Dec 14, 2016 3:15 am

Several days later, Basil took it upon himself to figure out where they'd be going after Colette repeatedly stated she didn't much mind and would go anywhere, which he took as her being coy.

Her invitation came in the form of a box, delivered to her not by Basil himself but through the school seemingly via the post. Inside the box was a a dress, gloves, hat and shawl and a short note folded in an envelope, with some kind of appointment card inside that had a business named "Evans and Peel Detective Agency" printed on it.

The note was from Basil, and simply stated 'You'd better get your facts sorted before we're interviewed.' With the time and date for their date, and instructions to meet him at the train station in Maldon.

Basil pulled his cellphone out of his inner breast pocket on his own, theme matching suit complete with alarmingly high trousers to check the time out of nervousness.

Colette had initially wished to chastise Basil for having bought her clothing. She hated the idea that he or others might think that she was only interested in him for his wealth and the presents he could give her. But the air of mystery and the idea of getting to wear a costume in public appealed to her even more so than the Halloween party had, though the girl had quite a few butterflies in her stomach. Colette had spent most of her life with her parents in a modestly furnished flat in Modelle. With the occasional exception of a few childhood trips into the French countryside, her journey to the university was one of the first times she'd really been out among "normal" people. So if Basil was worried about his parents finding out or what might happen to him, she was probably just as worried for her own reasons.

Still, she wore it well. Her hair was perfectly done up in curls, victory rolls as some called them, accentuated by the darling little fascinator. Of course, it was kind of cheating to have perfect hair when one could sculpt it's length and shape by looking at a picture and maybe using a butter knife or spoon to get it just right. She carried her purse in her hands as she approached, her black heels clacking against the pavement.

"My goodness Monsieur Benson, you are looking particularly smart zis evening."

"Ah, Madame Rosenhof.

Well... and Sam now.

" I'm glad I have your attention. Let's hope I don't fail to disappoint. " He laughed, taking her by the arm.

"Can you get ill?" Basil asked. He didn't know what might be hiding under her clothes, but he assumed it to be much like the rest of her. See-through and nondescript. It only occurred to him just in this moment that she might have things in common with 'regular folk' beyond the obvious things such as being sentient.

Basil went about the business of paying the fare to the automated machine that would take his 'money' as he asked in the form of a credit card swipe.

The train isn't terribly crowded but there's still plenty of people moving through the aisle to find a seat, some tourists, a bunch of commuters and, wearing a shitty old winter coat, a young woman weaving her way around people. Like most, she stares a little when she notices the empty suit and the humanoid slime, but unlike everyone else her eyes don't linger on the strangeness but rather the fancy clothes. She continues making her way past people, ducking under arms and squeezing past them, only when she gets to Basil and Colette she takes the opportunity to try and pick his pocket, since Basil was so kind as to show her where he kept his earbuds and (presumably) phone.

Colette smiled at the design on Basil's earbuds, a topic of conversation they'd share over dinner she was certain. She gently placed the offered bud into her ear, which went a little more literally than it would for most people, the surface tension slowly pulling the device to bob just inside her head. She was far too-absorbed in the excitement of that evening to pay notice to any of the other commuters.

Unfortunately for Shari, Basil *was* a Londoner and therefore a bit more savvy than the average commuter about keeping his most valuable things close, specifically in his breast pocket. But the thing in his pocket *was* pretty boxy and she felt the wire hooked into it.

Basil giggled when he felt her brush into him.

"Madame really... I haven't even fed you yet. " He teased, mistaking the vague touches with Colette being 'friendly. '

Shari's not about to waste an opportunity, regardless of how weird the comment might seem and she certainly isn't going to draw attention to herself by responding, even if that comment was aimed at her. Her fingers don't even close around the phone, instead just touching the screen and sticking to it like a gecko before pulling it out in the same moment she slips past Basil entirely. Unfortunately she does not manage to unhook the headphone cable like she'd intended to and thus the cable goes taut against Basil before the bud pulls out of Colette's 'ear' along with a glob of slime.

It took Basil a moment to realize what had happened, but when his head too wrenched forward and the small listening device popped out , it didn't take him long to put it together.

"Oi! You're jackin' my tunes!" He blurted out at her, grabbing in vain at his flying earphones.

At the sudden resistance an "Oops!" does escape her and she throws a cringing, almost apologetic grin over her shoulder at the invisible man and his pink friend. Then, before the Londoner in front of her can grab her by her coat scruff at Basil's accusation she ducks into the next section of seats to avoid being caught and clambers over the back of the seat to try and get to the door into the next cabin.

But not his music. "Stop! Thief!" He cries out over the crowd on the train, pushing forward through them in an attempt to catch up with her.

People are slow to make room but they are moving if only out of the surprise of seeing an empty suit coming at them, shouting. Ahead of him the young woman with the pixie haircut slips out the door into the next carriage and momentarily out of sight. When Basil finally makes his way past the people between him and the door he can see her through the small window, back turned to him as black color slowly seems to bleed into her hair starting form the roots while she takes the small moment of relative safety to look at her haul. Even locked a decently modern smartphone sells for a decent price, enough to pay for food for a while, maybe even a place to stay for a bit.

Unfortunately for Shari, what she nabbed wasn't a smartphone, locked or otherwise.

The near brick in her palm was a MP3 player, the origin of which she may or may not be familiar with. The giant object gave away the device's age, such things having gotten much more compact since it's creation.

Basil watched for a moment, a bit dumb founded as she began shifting into someone else. He still hadn't gotten used to other mutants yet.

But he forced his way into the next car, removing his hat as he did to make himself blend into the crowd. A dis-embodied suit was hard to spot among others bodies without a head to focus on.

And it seems to work. Or maybe Shari is just too dumbfounded by the fact that somebody carries around a downright ancient piece of crap like this. This probably barely covered lunch. And that's if she finds someone who even wants this. Maybe a museum... Between this and focusing on growing her hair out into long black strands she doesn't notice that Basil entered the cabin behind her as she slowly makes her way down the aisles, relatively certain she got away long enough to make herself unrecognizable. Although she has half a mind to turn around and just give the music player back. She doesn't, because that sounds like trouble and some fish and chips does sound good, even if that's all that'll come from this.

Because he hadn't disturbed the crowd, a few people glared at the invisible man as he shoved with no excuse mes or sorrys in Shari's direction, but being Brits they expected a keen sharp shame glower should be sufficient admonishment for his bad behavior. When he got close enough to Shari, he stood behind her and stated-

"Best give that back now poppet, it isn't yours and I'm quite fond of it."

Re: It Is A Mystery...

Colette's sheltered upbringing made the whole ordeal throw her for a loop. For one thing the earbud hadn't been yanked out of her ear, as the path of least resistance had been through her head and face to emerge from her cheek. It didn't hurt her, nor was the effect long in being mended instinctively. But the scene of someone stealing from her date, right out from under his invisible nose, plus her chasing after them? Why she sat in shocked silence for several seconds.

And then it occurred to her; isn't this how people get stabbed?

Colette leapt from her seat, slowed by the passengers shifting back into the aisle in Basil's wake, further hampering her efforts to catch up to the young man and his quarry. Of course she had a knack for squeezing through spaces that normal people could not, but this was an English passenger cabin; one forced their way through, not slipped through. The entire time she was calling out Basil's name and begging for him to be careful.

Shari jumps a little and spins around, taking half a step back, eye swiveling around before finally settling on the empty suit.

"You know, really, you should thank me. You know, for taking the rubbish out of your pocket." she says, apparently deciding that going on the offensive is the best course of action here while she figures out how to physically remove herself from the situation. "What even is this?"

"You needn't concern yourself with that. I can assure you it won't pawn for anything, so you might as well return it, lest I call security and have you taken in for petty theft over useless stolen tat."

He held out his gloved hand, waiting for her to deposit it into his palm.

"If it's so useless then why do you want it back so badly, huh?" she asks. "Sides, it wasn't me. Go ask anybody in that coach who nabbed your phone. Or... Zune?" she reads off of the device in question. By now her hair is mostly black and shoulder-length and her facial features are beginning to distort, which is mildly uncomfortable to watch as tissue rearranges itself like melting wax. "I grabbed it back as that ruffian ran past like the good Samaritan I am." she nods. "If anything some kind of finder's fee would be appropriate."

Colette had reached the end of the car and, not finding Basil there, moved to the next one. His distinctive suit caught her eye.

"Basil, please be careful! She could have a knife!" She knew it couldn't be scissors because those were illegal in Britain, or so she'd heard. But the woman Basil was talking to wasn't whom she'd seen before. At least, what little she had seen.

For Basil, it wasn't about the Zune anymore. It was about something else now.

"Take it or leave it. You've still got my property in your hands, and I think the authorities will believe me in a 'takes one to know one' scenario like this."

He obviously wasn't listening to Colette at the moment.

Colette looked upset, but not in the way she normally did. Not excited, or sad,or even offended. She looked angry, not in an irrational sense or about to fly off the handle sense, but the cold calculating kind that can be rather frightening to some. If Basil had called her jelly-head, or even one of the other students, she likely would have giggled at it and considered it an affectionate and descript little moniker. But it was this woman's tone that was setting her off. Who would have thought that those translucent eyes were capable of shooting daggers at the woman. Well not literally, it's an expression; but with mutants one never knows.

"Me faut retourner à la pute qui m'a accouchée." She said coldly.

"You do not speak to Madame in that fashion." Basil replied angrily, not bothering to call Colette on her own rude behavior since it had been provoked.

Basil plunged his hand into his inner pocket and carefully counted out the three bills he knew were 20s inside the pocket where she couldn't see them before he had the inclination to change his mind on what he was about to do.

"I want you to take this money, and get off at the next station. I want you to fill your belly with a nice hot meal, and then I want you to board the train again to Maldon. You should go to the address listed on the card. They'll take you in and keep you warm, dry, and fed. I suggest you get to know them well because while I can't make you promise me you'll do it, I can promise you that after tonight, they're going to know who you are."

Folded into the money was a generic school business card, the kind passed to all employees like Basil who weren't important enough for their own, but important enough to maybe need them for some reason. He held it out of her reach until he got his item back however.
