That's How We Keep You In Repair

The fey craftsmen cart Will to a room in the basement of the castle, setting him gently on a table. An older looking woman peers at his injuries and prods at some of his uninjured parts. "You are made of a most marvelous material, young man."

"I try," he grimaced-smiled back.

"I don't know if it's the wound, or something in the air here, but I seem to be...somewhat unable to fix myself up, here..."

"Oh, it's the wound," she says with confidence, "That... vile creature was wielding Fragarach. No man can recover from the wounds it inflicts. And our magic is prevented from healing such a wound." She pulls out a length of cord, knotted at intervals and begins measuring Will.

"Fraggle Rock? Work your cares away, indeed.

I'm not...not exactly a man, though, so...shouldn't I be able to fix myself from this?"

"Spoken like a human," she says with a snort. "Magic knows. Magic always knows. Just because you've changed what you look like doesn't mean you're any different in essence," she comments, turning to one of the craftsmen who has a parchment and quill. She rattles off some things that sort of sound like they might be numbers before turning her attention back to Will.

"I'll try not to take that personally.

What is it, uh...

...What is it that you do...here....exactly?" he said, trying (and failing) to crane his neck to look around.

"I am the Lady's chief dressmaker. Tallius here is a blacksmith. We've got an assortment of others here. With all these great minds, we should be able to figure out something."

"Well, I'm not as fancy as a dress for the Lady of the Lake, so I'm sure you can bodge something together without too much worry. Nothing too much to stress over."

"We'll certainly give it our best effort," she says, "The least we can do for what you did." She takes some more measurements of the wound, barking off more figures to Tallius who dutifully writes them down.

"Well, uh, I thank you." Will said, awkwardly.

"And, while you're at it, I've got some...dings and whatnot from earlier in the fight. Maybe you could...like...take a look at those as well?"

"Of course," she says, noting the dents and dings and having Tallius make even more notes. "Are you more of a bronze or iron man?"

"Oh, definitely bronze; I'm not nearly technically knowledgeable enough to be Iron Man."

"Bronze is a much nicer looking metal, if I do say so myself," comments Tallius, scribbling something down on the parchment.

Another man with a mug of something approaches, "Would you like something for the pain, sir?"

"I'm afraid I'm sort of...hollow right now. If I were to drink...that...it'd just splash down where you're working, and that wouldn't be of any use to anyone. One would imagine."

He paused.

"Thanks for the offer, though. I'm sure that in your capable hands, this won't be too uncomfortable?" he said, turning that confident statement into more of a question as he went along.

"We'll do our best," the seamstress reassures him.

The man with the mug disappears to be replaced by a man whose fingertips were stained a yellow-brown. He peers at the wounds and then at the woman, "Terra, I'm thinking deer. Will deer work?"

"...Deer?" Will asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Leather," the man says, "I have cow and deer handy. Do you have a preference?"

"Oh! Oh of course. I just kind of..."

Will didn't want to admit that he really hadn't considered that leather came from animals.

"Nevermind. You're the experts, right? You would know what works better than I do...as long as everything is, uh, joined up. More or less properly."

"We'll certainly do our best," Terra the seamstress says. She seems to say that a lot.

After a bit, he can hear the whoosh of a forge starting up and the sound of hammers beginning to ring on metal.

"Uh..." Will said, trying (and, once again, failing) to crane his neck around to see what was going on.

"Are you going to be able to work with these gashes, or do you need to, uh, open up more space?" he said, beginning (for the first time) to question the skills of these craftsmen.

"I think we have just the thing to fill out the gashes. We just need to make sure the coverings will fit, otherwise the stuffing won't stay put," Terra says.

"...Stuffing?" Will eeped.

"Well, we have to fill the gashes in with something. Some of them we can sew up, but some of them are too big and we'll have to pad them out."

"I'm...not sure how I feel about that," Will said, warily. "Maybe we should just leave things as they are until I heal, you know...naturally."

"It should be fine," Terra reassures him, "Besides, we have to fix this one." She gestures at the gash the Red Lord had given him. "That one's not going to heal on its own, no matter we do."

"Back plate coming in," says a voice as hands gently lift him and something sturdy slides in under his back.

The loose parts of Will dangle haphazardly as he's lifted into the air.

"Gah! That's cold!" he complained, as the back plate was slid into place.

"Apologies," says Tallius, "Didn't think you'd want it hot off the forge."

There's a whump from next to table as something heavy is set down and Terra accepts two things that look like arrow shafts from someone he can't see and she begins wedging them into the gap in the center of his torso.

"Nnnnya! What are you....that feels really strange...what's all this for?" Will asked, squirming as Terra began to work on his torso.

"Framework. We need some sort of support structure or you'll just collapse," she says, adjusting one of the pieces of wood. Then she sticks a hand off to the side and begins stuffing him with what looks like bits of cloth.

"Have you....careful!....have you done anything like this before?" Will asked, warily.

Always right on the spot with those timely questions, Will.

Terra shakes her head, "Not exactly. But the principle is sound." She looks up as something catches her attention, "Fergus, you are not going to just belt this in place. Get the rivets, fool."

"Rivets? You'll crack the plastic for sure!" Will protested, trying to grab onto something to pull himself away from these crazy folks.

"Not for you," Terra say, pushing him back down onto the table, "for the front plate. Have to make it look respectable."

She smiles at him in a way that's not precisely reassuring. "The Lady promised we would take good care of you and we will. She's taken excellent care of us." She goes back to stuffing.

"Before the Lady arrived, there was no sanctuary for us. If it hadn't been for her and the Green Lord, we'd all still be Lost," she says, eyeballing the stuffing and giving it another pat or two before adding some more.

"Lost. Surely the Lady's daughter mentioned them. We were all forced across the Veil for whatever reason suited the Grey Lords, cut off from home. This..." She pauses as she scrutinizes the stuff and nods, satisfied. "This world is... not kind to the fey. It used to be better, before the Grey Lords decided that we all should leave it."

"Mmm. This world's not kind to a lot of people, but it sounds like you got the particular short end of the stick. I'm very sorry to hear that. Is there anything we can do?"
