To Valhalla Soon Will Ride

Wanda wakes up feeling unwell. She frowns at the sensation, thinking maybe it's time to go home. As she pauses though, she feels an insistent tugging in the unwell feeling. After a moment's reflection, she gets up, pulling on her walking gear and stepping outside the cabin. The cold air takes her breath for a moment before she tugs her scarf up to cover most of her face and grabs her walking stick. The tugging leads her towards a patch of evergreen in the distance.

It's not a short walk, but Wanda's had a lot of practice in the last few days and she makes good time. She stops at the edge of the evergreens, frowning as she regards the darker spaces under the trees. Whatever it is, it's wanting her to come in there. She should know better, especially after recent events, but then she hears the plaintive cry and she steps under the boughs of the trees, delving deeper into the thicket. Before long, she stumbles out into a small clearing. The scent of blood hangs on the air, even as it stains the snow, but there's no sign of a source for the blood. Wanda frowns and stalking slowly around the clearing, looking for signs, but seeing little.

After some fruitless searching in the clearing, Wanda inhales deeply and closes her eyes. The ill sensation nearly pulls her to her knees. She swallows hard and reaches for that core again, struggling to find it, but finally laying her mental fingers on it. In her mind, the clearing pulls itself into sharp relief with a black miasma hovering over the blood on the ground. The miasma swirls around before trailing off the far side of the clearing as if carried on some wind current that she can't properly see. She tightens her grip on her walking stick and starts following the miasma.

The shadows seem to get longer as Wanda follows the trail. Up ahead, the sounds of some wild animal tearing into its food cause her to slow her pace and approach more cautiously. It's hard to see because of the thickness of the trees, but she rounds a tree and stops dead in her tracks. A deer is lying on the ground, torn open in a savage manner. It's not a wild animal tearing into it though.

Bits of metal armor hang off the man, or what once might have been a man. The remnants of clothes peek out through rotted gaps in the armor. A wild white beard adorns a face sunken and pulled tight over the bones as a dull blue glow burns in the eye sockets.

Wanda gulps and brandishes her walking stick. The motion catches the man's attention and he turns slowly to look at Wanda, glowing eyes fixing on the young woman. She can feel the gaze trying to bore into her mind with pure malevolent madness. She's hanging onto that core for dear life though and the madness washes over her and around her. "Not today," she whispers, "And not ever again."

Lightning and wind barely seemed to slow the creature. Wanda pulls on every trick in her book as she fights off the creature. Finally the creature scores a hit, knocking her to the ground. She crawl-scrambles away as the creature stalks her, assured that his prey is now at his mercy.

"The symbols..."

There is that whisper again, tugging at the back of her mind. For some reason, her mind fixates on one of the vine symbols in particular. Without even knowing what she is doing, she reaches out with a blood-stained finger, tracing the symbol in the snow even as the creature reaches for her. The symbol starts to glow and Wanda rolls away. The symbol explodes, rich green light searing the creature and causing it to howl in agony.

Blackness begins to invade the edges of Wanda's vision as she reaches to the sky again. There's a bright blue-white flash followed immediately by a thunderous boom as the creature jerks and shakes, falling apart into a pile of smoking ruin. A brief moment of satisfaction fills her right before she passes out.

The sun is high in the sky by the time Wanda becomes conscious again. She struggles to her feet, taking a few halting steps that have her leaning against a tree for support. She's still dreadfully tired and her muscles are sore. She takes a deep breath and moves on. It takes her longer to return to the cabin, impaired as she is and she manages to just build a fire and collapse into the chair next to it. Welcome warmth begins to invade her and she closes her eyes, in restful sleep this time.
