Vagaries of Fate

Ever since Hazard had threatened her family Nailah had felt adrift. Cut loose from the certainty of her power and forced to watch her parents be rushed to the hospital she'd never felt so helpless. Even away from Hazard and the strange effects he had on her power she was still without guidance. There simply was nothing she could do but hope and wait. Wander up and down sterile hallways when sitting besides her parents' hospital beds became too much to bear. All her power could do was avoid being kicked out and even then she still got plenty of mistrusting glances from nurses, doctors, patients and visitors alike. Freak. Mutant. Got her parents hurt. For playing superhero.

She has a lot of time to think as the days slowly slip towards the holidays. Even when her parents are finally stable and reliably conscious nobody exactly feels like Christmas, especially after Nailah breaks down and tells them about her exploits, ultimately leading to Hazard taking note of her. And for a couple days the nurses don't have to chase her out of her parents' room as much and she spends a lot of time brooding on the roof instead. It's uncharacteristically cold for Arizona, clouds even bringing in the slightest dusting of snow for a couple of hours. It doesn't stick, but it still looks surreal to her. It's like any kind of foundation has been pulled out from under her. What had the old woman said? 'When you understand what it means, I think you will be ready to move forward.' For a moment she'd seen it, the same way she had shown her and just as back then all it revealed was ruin. What good was moving forward if that's all it led to? One step or a hundred, what difference did it make? She'd just be pushing the uncertainty ahead of herself while sifting through the beach in search for a grain of sand that might be gold. She'd been happier when she hadn't known. When she'd thought that her mutation was just a physical one. Before she'd set herself on some kind of rails that she didn't even remember choosing.

She breaks herself out of her spiraling thoughts with a frustrated scream and jumps to her feet. Without thinking she jumps to her feet and just sprints forward towards the edge of the roof. No plan, no path, no goal. At least for a moment she leaves all of that behind her as she throws herself into the moment and off the roof. A couple people below let out startled gasps before her wings snap open and catch her just in time to pull out of her dive and up into the sky, wind rushing through her hair as she rises higher and higher. The cold air stings her face but right now she doesn't care. Right now she's just free from everything. Up here everything seems small and nothing matters. It's just her and the open sky...
