Crimea River

Postby Narrator » Tue Jan 10, 2017 3:10 am

Getting a hold of one of Tereza's old contacts hadn't been too hard. Convincing one of them to help smuggle them into Crimea had taken a little more convincing but in the end they had agreed to find them a place on a ship from Constanta in Romania. Getting there had been relatively simple due to Europe's open borders and keeping their eyes open it was almost impossible not to notice that they weren't the only group of mutants travelling east. Unlike them most of those looked like refugees with little to their name. They saw less and less of them as their route took them further south until they seemed to dry up entirely at the coast of the Black Sea. The docks in Constanta still looked alright, but there wasn't much activity and they showed the first signs of economic downturn. Apparently no one cared to do much trade with Crimea these days, which while technically not a war-zone isn't exactly one of the most stable regions at the moment.

The ship taking them across the waters was almost more of a boat, fishing nets and the constant stench of the sea cements it's cover. Or maybe it just actually is a fishing boat on most days. The Captain doesn't ask many questions and just hands everyone clothes that smell about as bad as the ship but have them blend in fairly well. Though he does shove wool hats into Sam and Tereza's hands to cover up their less-than-subtle hair. Only an hour into the trip they can already see why people might be hesitant of approaching Sevastopol, the silhouettes of several Russian ships becoming visible in the distance just before the city itself comes into view. It's still mid-day and the weather is cold but clear enough. The captain takes them on a route that runs parallel to what only technically isn't a blockade until he makes his way around the cluster of ships before hooking around and approaching the peninsula from the east, pointing at the much smaller city on the coast and simply says "Yalta. Give call and I come pick you up." He doesn't exactly seem the most trustworthy man in existence, but he did take them this far. The last 20 minutes of the journey he spends on the radio, talking in Russian to what is presumably the port authority before pulling the small fishing boat into the harbor and shooing everybody off the ship. A much younger man is waiting for them with a beat-up car to take them the last 30 minutes to Sevastopol by car and then they find themselves at their destination.

The city seems normal, traffic, both cars and on foot, no immediate signs of conflict. But regularly one can see Russian military driving by, seemingly patrolling the streets and here and there and especially in more open places like old marketplaces and parks there are tanks stationed. Almost casually, as if to simply serve as a reminder of who is in charge.

Her mind picks up a mix of anxiety from the civilians, peppered with the generally more orderly and martial minds of soldiers. She doesn't notice any particular threat right this very moment. The city seems relatively at ease, or as much as it can be considering the circumstance. Many civilians aren't happy about the occupation, which seems obvious, although as far as she can tell there's no signs of considering active resistance in people. They find the statue presumably meant by the message fast enough, surrounded by a plaza that has enough pedestrians walking about that a single person wouldn't stand out immediately. A couple of people are near the statue, two of them stitting on the steps right underneath.

Around 11:50 a man in military uniform (Russian Navy, as they might note from the similarities to the ones they'd seen on their extra-dimensional adventure), walks across the plaza and towards the statue. Fishing something from his breast pocket he shoos the other people away and sits down himself, lighting what appears to be a cigarette and seeming to take a smoke-break.

The naval officer doesn't seem to react, only a very keen eye being able to discern that he does briefly glance after the woman, but that might just be because she has a fairly striking look.

Meanwhile a woman with long dark hair, the rest of her features hidden under a warm hat pulled deep into her face against the cold, approaches the statue from the other side.

Or possibly pat her down.

The woman, more out of reflex than anything, almost seems like she was half a second away from grabbing the woman's arm and executing a martial arts move of some sort in reaction to being 'attacked'. When she realizes her mistake she stops herself, but it's blindingly obvious to Chase.

"<Watch where you're going.>" she snaps in Russian. She doesn't seem to have any weapons in any obvious places, though there are a number that are harder to accidentally pat down without rousing suspicion.

The man on the other side of the statue seems to not pay the situation any mind, continuing to smoke his cigarette.

It seems the dark-haired woman has as well, though it might be weaker. What she can pick up is that there's definitely some animosity coming from the black-haired woman along with a healthy dose of suspicion. Seems like she doesn't know who the white-haired lady is, but suspects she might be here to interfere with something.

As everyone suspiciously eyes everyone else the Russian naval officer slowly takes one last drag from his cigarette, dropping it to the ground and grinding it out on the stone as he takes a look around as if he finally caught up to the coffee spillage. From his angle it'd be almost impossible for him not to notice the coffee blade twitching under the influence of the two competing cryokinetics but he just turns away, leans against the statue and pulls out a newspaper that he almost dramatically shakes out to unfold.

The white-haired woman seems to notice immediately, and looks quickly in Tereza's direction as she clamps down in her control of the ice in her hand. It takes her a moment to find Tereza's face in the crowd but when she does a look of recognition dawns, followed by a brief expression of confusion. Then her features harden and she clenches her free hand.

Tereza feels the temperature around her suddenly drop, and ice starts to form around her feet.

The temperature drop doesn't seem to bother Tereza, but the ice around her feet seems to irritate her. It shivers as Tereza tries to wrest control of it from Natalya. She grins in a manner inconsistent with the seriousness of the situation, briefly beckoning with a finger before sipping at the remains of her coffee.

And that's when Weikun's suspicions topple over into realizing something is up. And with her meeting busted she does the only sensible thing. She turns away from the white-haired woman and walks away. Not sprinting, but definitely in a hurry. She doesn't get very far though when suddenly...

The Russian naval officer shakes his head and calmly folds his newspaper again when Weikun books it. Somehow, despite clearly taking his sweet time she's barely three steps away when he tucks the paper under his arm and walks around the statue. Despite his clear lack of hurry he still somehow manages to take a dozen steps while Weikun takes one and watching this unfold almost feels like the world is desynchronized. The man doesn't seem to be moving faster, yet he seems to find the additional time between each second to be almost casual in his movements. The pistol he's pulling from it's holster on the other hand is less casual and neither is the expression on Weikun's face when she realizes it's being aimed at her.

Chase watched the hit unfold but found himself frozen by indecision. On the one hand, heroes, like he was trying to be, didn't let people die. On the other, she was guaranteed to kill again and he didn't want that on his conscience either. Sam could probably sense his warrior instincts wavering.

It seems like the man did not expect any outside interference, especially not from random pedestrians. Not that the civilian is any less surprised when he suddenly throws himself at an armed Russian admiral, but it does knock the gun aside and the shot that rings out goes wide, ricocheting off the pavement. The Admiral struggles with the pedestrian for a moment before tossing him aside with surprising strength. While he does Weikun barely seems to find the time to pull two throwing knives from a hidden holster, hand still pulled back to throw it as the Admiral sets his sight on her again.

Sam's action broke him free of indecision and he sprung into action. As the Admiral struggled with the pedestrian, Chase drew an expandable baton from his coat and made his way through the civilians fleeing the gunshot.

"Keep her from getting away. I've got the shooter."

He suddenly lunged in to swing the baton at the man's gun arm.

The man almost casually looks up towards Chase sprinting towards him, yet somehow is still faster. It's almost disorienting. The baton slams into the gun just in time, another shot going wild before the weapon is send clattering across the ground. The man looks after it wistfully, then back up at Chase and grabs the wrist of the hand holding the baton while his other hand throws a punch at Chase's face.

Weikun meanwhile, trying to get away, narrowly avoids the shard of coffee embedding itself into her leg, instead only leaving a superficial cut that makes her stumble none the less. Instead of letting that get in her way she leans into it and as she goes into a controlled tumble the two throwing knives flash as she sends them at the white-haired woman.

While all of that is going on, someone from the crowd of pedestrians steps up and suddenly Sam finds herself being strangled by what appears to be a silk tie, held by what might be the blandest man in existence. In fact he's so non-descript, even his mind seems to slip Sam's notice, which might explain how he managed to get the jump on her.

"I found the Cerebral projector, Walter!" he shouts across the plaza to, presumably, the Admiral.
