L'heure Entre Chien et Loup

Falling.

Tereza remembers falling.

Falling to her hands and knees? No, it feels like she's fallen farther than that.

Her eyes finally open a crack, the ground beneath her cold. No, not just cold, but hard with permafrost. Snow is falling around her, on her. Moonlight filters through the snowflakes as they flutter down.

She's in the forest again.

Somewhere in the distance a wolf howls.

What the hell? "Sam? Sam!" She struggles to her feet, looking around at the familiar, yet unfamiliar forest.

"Far, far away, daughter." An unpleasantly familiar voice with a faint accent says from behind her.

The trees seem... bigger than she remembers in her dream. The trunks thicker, the tops higher, their roots old and gnarled.

In the direction she heard the howl from, she hears distant growling and snarling, interposed with the cawing of a raven.

Tereza spins on the closer voice, suppressing the urge to run for where she hears the ravens.

It's the woman she fought outside of the pub. Or a version of her, at the least. Naked, with long sweat-matted hair plastered over her tall frame. On her bare skin paint is daubed in odd symbols.

"I was beginning to worry you wouldn't wake up," she smiles toothily.

Tereza instinctively glances in the direction of the other noises and then back to Isolde. "I swear, if she ends up hurt because of you, I *will* hunt you down and you won't like how that hunt ends." Her fists clench and ice forms across her knuckles.

"Oh daughter, now is not the time to flirt with me."

The sound of a collision echoes through the trees, the crack of splintering wood. There's another raven's caw shortly after.

"Let us be clear here: she is going to be hurt because of you."

It takes awhile before Tereza is able to start seeing the source of the noises. Black feathers float on the wind between the trees, and tufts of black fur dangle from brambles here and there.

As she nears, she sees a clearing in which a large black wolf is backing away from where it has charged a tree, shaking splinters from its pelt. Behind it, a raven darts in to peck at its back.

Tereza goes right through the wolf, though for the brief period they occupy the same space she gets a flash of the dark woods, the sound of Sam groaning behind her and... Nailah in a weird outfit divebombing her.

As Tereza emerges on the other side of the wolf, her frame is larger, more muscular, and has patches of dark hair.

Behind her, a golden eagle cries and attacks the wolf head-on.

The raven is lying on the ground behind the wolf.

The raven manages to get up finally. It caws at the eagle, which screeches back before swooping and clawing at the wolf.

Whatever it was seems to be going on without her. She feels the pull of the wolf and she looks at the patches of fur on her arms then at the wolf again. Finally she yells at the wolf, "Hey! I'm talking to you! Sit! Stay!"

The wolf snaps at the eagle, finally managing to catch it in its jaws and fling it aside. Then its ears perk at Tereza, turning towards her and cocking its head like a confused puppy.

Why does my side hurt? Tereza rubs idly at her side, while still looking the wolf in the eye. "I... SAID... SIT!" Without really thinking about it, she pours her anger and frustration into the command. Anger at Vivienne, anger at her family, anger at just general bullshit. Her brain just bundles it all up and forces it all into a single command.

The wolf looks appropriately scolded, sitting down on its haunches as its ears wilt. It holds out a paw towards Tereza.

Tereza tentatively reaches towards the wolf's paw, trying desperately to get a sense of whether this is a trick, but lacking any sort of mental abilities to give that to her.

Upon grasping the wolf's paw, Tereza's own hand warps, growing larger and more pawlike as black fur sprouts up her arm.

The wolf is shrinking somehow, or Tereza is growing. Possibly some of each as she comes to resemble the shape Isolde fought her in. There's more flashes of the other fight, of Nailah and Sam and the sudden sensation of falling as vines wrap around her legs.

Tereza watches the change, part of her wanting to revel in the sensation, but still fighting it because she gets the feeling that she won't get herself back. And she's already been in one of those sorts of situations and she's never going back to that again.

The pull towards the wolf is getting stronger, the flashes of the other place more frequent and longer, until suddenly Tereza is fully seeing through her monstrous self's eyes, feeling the air on her pelt, the thrilling strength in her limbs.

She hears Sam calling out, "That is Tereza! She changed!"
