Surfing the Network

Postby Natalie Denisov » Wed May 16, 2018 6:02 pm

Natalie's body... she was starting to think of it that way more and more... was currently plugged in in the workshop charging. Her nightly processing was running, but that really didn't require her oversight. So now her presence was surfing the network a bit, chasing random pathways and checking various sectors. She almost had a physical presence in the network, her own data clustered around her in an almost Natalie-like shape.

Where Natalie's presence is more or less person-shaped, Ashlie's is more like an octopus. The central core the densest with tendrils of activity spreading throughout the network, many of them running their own processes to deal with whatever task they're occupied with. It creates an interesting map of campus and almost bit of a heatmap of Ashlie's priorities. A lot of activity in the workshop, mostly focused on designs but some allocated to running a couple of the 3D printers in the back. Some devoted to administrative tasks, a good chunk accumulating data from outside sources and combing it for patterns. Background awareness, presumably. Occasionally activity flares up here and there in the form of phonecalls, but they're rare at this time of day.

From the outside it'd be easy to mistake the message as accusatory, but being immersed in the system sets a certain baseline of operating on facts which makes it easy to take it at face value, which is Ashlie trying to be helpful.

No. Just exploring. Stretching my digital legs if you will. Lying in the workshop watching the ceiling is boring.

None of the expected 'lack of sleep' symptoms. No hallucinations or any of the other mental symptoms I would expect. Tracking physical symptoms seems like a waste of time given the body difference.

Her presence floats towards Ashlie. Distance doesn't matter with this sort of communication, but there's just some human reflex to be close to the person you're talking to.

Natalie finishes closing the 'space', her hand making contact with it. It's not precisely like physical contact, but she seems to be enforcing some sort of boundaries between her own coded presence and Ashlie's so that it ends up in the neighborhood of contact.

Ashlie's data stream reaches out and makes contact with the cube, it's contents being copied into a string that gets sucked down one of her 'arms'.

Code: Select all
>> "It's the polite thing to ask."

Again her data undulates slightly. Towards the core of the data Natalie can catch glimpses of her code package being analyzed and being prompted to cycle through a number of geometric shapes. Finally it seems to explode outwards, almost seeming as if it's glitching out for a moment, but in actuality the perimeter of the construct just jumps around the network, scanning it as it compiles a digital 'shape'. The tangle of connections throughout the network solidify into roots or tendrils that all come together into the upper torso of a humanoid shape. Her face is, for lack of a better word, wobbly, changing as the code moves, sometimes lagging behind as she looks around.

Code: Select all
>> "This is fascinating."
