Mr. Beckett, when you get a chance could you come see me in my office?
Alternatively open ports 86800 through 86958 on a device with audio/video capabilities.
Thank you.

Headmistress

My apologies, but I'm very busy with my recent projects, and I must sadly decline your offer to visit you in your office.

Best wishes with your future endeavors

A couple minutes later his computer registers a spike in network activity as some kind of code injection executes itself on the OS level and a window with a fairly accurate 3D rendering of Ashlie's face pops up.

"I did offer an alternative." Ashlie's voice comes from the speakers. Apparently her request for open ports was just an odd form of politeness.

"Didn't your mother ever tell you not to enter strange mainframes," Cam said, continuing to type.

He clicked and dragged the window with ASHLIE's face off to one side.

"As a matter of fact she did. The trick is knowing when a rule needs to be broken." she says, sounding amused.

"Did she also tell you it's rude to eat up a computer's memory? And I thought Chrome was a process hog."

"It'd run more efficiently if you opened the necessary ports." she says, ignoring Cam essentially calling her fat. "Regardless, I need to talk to you about smuggling a 'student' into the database. Did you know what she was when you created those entries for her?"

"I'm not entirely sure of what you speak.

Be assured, though, that, hypothetically speaking, I only act after all the relevant facts have been made clear."

"Hypothetically, it was a person who needed help. That person then received the necessary help. There are no other relevant facts, are there, headmistress?"

"Not at all. I'm not calling to reprimand you. I'm saving that for the incident that ruined numerous items in the entrance hall. But regarding our extra-terrestrial guest you did well."

"Of course technically manipulating the student database is forbidden, but considering she lacked any paperwork it's... close enough to what I would have done to enter her into the system."

"How fortunate. Now then, what was the benefit of unleashing a rather... persistent projectile on the entrance hall?"

"I needed a test in real-world conditions. I believe you'll find that I properly secured a space, and marked out an area as being an experiment in process. It is hardly my fault that someone else opted to interfere with the experiment. My assistant was not around to secure the area, either."

"You do realize we have both a workshop and a hard-light simulation chamber for that kind of thing."

"A hard-light simulation chamber, even a highly-accurate one, is not as efficient as replicating real-world conditions as the real world. And in case of accidents, the workshop is much more important to keep intact than the foyer."

"Unfortunately you'll always have to deal with the background radiation of social norms. And more often than not it's actually easier to adhere to them than not. I assume you don't actually enjoy clashing with other students."

"I was under the assumption you'd be opposed to me attempting to control the other students on campus. If you're amiable to that, I have some drawings," he said, opening up a drawer and digging through a stack of papers.

"Trust your instincts on this and leave those drawings where they are. I'm merely saying that you have some control over how people react by social interaction. For instance, people generally react poorly if you point out that their intellectual capabilities are beneath yours, especially when it is the truth. I am still banned from attending the annual Mathematics Symposium in Oslo for that very reason."
