Out of the Frying Pan

Up until recently maintained as a museum, the childhood home of the Braddock family has been pressed into service as classroom space for the University. Additionally, the increased demands have led to the main ballroom being converted into a cafeteria for University students on a meal plan. The old library has been bolstered with college textbooks.

Out of the Frying Pan

Postby Miriam Bell » Sat Jul 08, 2017 3:56 am

It's late at night when a car pulls up in front of the gates, headlights briefly sweeping across the gravel of the empty drive-way as it pulls around. One of the doors opens and closes and Miriam slips inside through the smaller entrance next to the big gate. She hurries across the driveway on bare feet, looking rather miserable when she steps into the light cast by the lamps outside the mansion's doors. Her dress is wet and sticks to her. She's tried to clean it up somewhat, but numerous stains remain. Her eyes look gaunt and her skin has the sickly paleness of nausea.

"Holy shit. Mir, are you okay?" a concerned voice called from above. Haley, feet dangling over the edge, was seated on the roof, but now pushed herself forward and floated down.

"...do you want me to just leave?" she asked, catching, if nothing else the mental annoyance of her roommate as she touched down a disappointed frown crossing her face. "But you're soaked...do you at least want my jacket or anything, or help...I don't know, getting to the infirmary?"

"I'm fine..." she says. It's fairly obvious that her annoyance and frustration is at least in part because she's embarrassed that somebody saw her like this. "I don't need the infirmary. I need a shower and something to eat."

"...do you want some of my pizza?" she asked, looking up to the roof, and narrowing her eyes in focus as a pizza box floated downward.

"I was trying to stay out of the room since it was late and I didn't want to disturb you, but I guess you weren't in..."

She eyed her roommate, "if you want to sneak in I could fly us through our window."

"You were eating pizza on the roof?" she asks as she grabs a slice from the levitating box. Usually she'd spare the food some disdain just for appearances sake, but not tonight. She crams a good part of the slice into her mouth and starts chewing the bare minimum before gulping it down. The second half of the slice soon follows the same fate.

Oddly enough, the pizza doesn't seem to be helping. She still feels hungry. She is wolfing it down though, so maybe her brain just needs to catch up with her stomach.

Haley looked at the display, impressed, but afraid to pry too much, "...well, I sort of wanted some peace and quiet. I'm having a shitty control day and being on the roof sort of helps block out the mental noise."

She pulled out a slice herself to munch on. "And like I said, I wanted to let you have the room to yourself without me bugging you."

"Just hungry. I haven't eaten for a day." she says, still not really feeling like the gnawing hunger in her stomach has let up any. She's inclined to blame the smell of the grime still clinging to her ruining any real satisfaction of eating. "And I need a shower."

Hunger or not, she has got to get herself cleaned up and so she drags herself to the showers and peels off her dress and tosses it away in disgust. She cranks up the shower and for what feels like an eternity just lets the water hit her face and cascade down her body. Slowly but surely the grime is washed off of her and swirls down the drain and every once in a while she runs her fingers through her hair to make sure there's nothing left. For much more she feels like she's lacking the energy right now, although the hot water is helping a little. She doesn't seem to notice that the shower room isn't really getting fogged up as it should though. The lukewarm water feeling nice and warm on her skin. After who knows how long she finds a towel somebody forgot in the showers and wraps it around her self.

Finally, feeling clean and a little more human again without the constant stench in her nose, she heads to her and Haley's room wearing nothing but the towel, her wet hair slicked back to dry in the air for now.

Now that her brain and senses aren't fogged by the constant stench, she becomes acutely aware of the impressions everyone has left everywhere. Haley's hand on their room door. Sam's presence and the feral canine impressions left behind by Tereza on the door across the hall. The strange impressions left behind by the inhabitants of Room 117. Maybe she's just tired and hungry that she's not screening it out as well as she should.

Haley had debated for a second too long how to agree politely with her roommate's assessment of her current eau de dumpster fragrance choice, and she was already inside and heading up the stairs before she could speak. She closed up the pizza box and followed her roommate before pausing, and taking off into the air in the opposite direction towards the cafeteria.

By the time Miriam returned to the room, Haley had the pizza box set out on the floor of the room, along with a tray of buffalo wings, fries, and several wrapped up burgers and sandwiches from the late night menu at the cafe. Haley sat cross-legged on the floor, cracking open a can of soda and munching on fries.

"You still seemed hungry, so I got some more stuff. Hope it's okay."

Re: Out of the Frying Pan

On some level Miriam appreciates the fact that Haley is making an effort to be nice, even if the selection of food is almost dreadfully American a stray amused thought flashes through her head. Still, as hungry as she is it should still smell enticing, yet what stands out to her is something she can't really place among the greasy offering. More musky and sweet with a tinge of a savory tang that faintly reminds her of something. She's confused for a moment before she realizes it's not coming from the food at all but rather from the small blonde stuffing fries in her mouth. Not that she's never smelled somebody else or been... enticed by it, but never to this extent and certainly not this voraciously. She sits down next to Haley, legs folded underneath her to one side. She's kind of stretching the towel's ability to keep her covered, but that's not particularly high on her list of concerns right now.

"Thanks, it's... very American." she chuckles. She's too hungry to be sarcastic right now, which probably is a refreshing change of pace for Haley. In fact she seems to have let down her usual aloof-seeming mental guard and seems almost... pleasant.

"Well," she said, swallowing her fries and taking a swig of her drink, flashing her roommate a meek smile, "Sorry. I wasn't sure if you liked curry, and it was a 15 minute wait on fish to go with the f--chips, so I grabbed what was ready." She wasn't especially concerned about others seeing her without much clothing, especially her roommate, so she figured that maybe Miriam was the same way, and paid her lack of clothing no mind.

...though Miriam did have a pretty nice body, if she was being honest.

"This one's chicken, this is turkey, that's a cheeseburger..." she said pointing out the various sandwiches. Haley had probably spend close to 30 pounds on all of the food laid out in front of them.

Haley may have been misreading this situation.

She's not entirely wrong at least. "I just hate that you can't keep your damned thoughts to yourself..." Miriam whispers into her ear before placing a kiss on her neck, her hands gliding through the blonde hair. On some level she realizes what she's doing and that this is a terrible idea, but she needs this. Cold lips are replaced by sharp teeth against Haley's neck that turn into sudden pain as thick, silky taste fills Miriam's mouth. The tinge of metal almost is a little smokey among the rich velvet she hungrily drinks down.

Haley shuddered as the lips brushed against her ear and then her neck, sliding closer to her roommate, so caught up in the sensation that she ignored the words, "...you're so cold..." she gasped in pleasure before the fun very abruptly stopped and was replaced with sharp pain.

"What the FUCK?!" she yelled, leveling a blast of telekinetic force at Miriam's stomach and trying to pull away.

It wasn't clear if Miriam was indeed using some power of suggestion--vampiric or telepathic--or if Haley simply had exceptionally poor judgement due to blood loss or simply wanting her roommate to like her. Whatever the case, Haley took the can and pulled her hand away from her neck, letting her hand drip a few bits of blood into the can, then relaxing her focus on her neck wound as she brought the lip of the can up to the skin just underneath it.

"If you kill me I'm going to fucking haunt you."

"Knowing my luck that's probably exactly what would happen..." she mutters and heads out of the room. It doesn't take that long and she comes back, holding a small first aid kit as promised, doing her best to not look like she full-on sprinted down the hallways. It doesn't occur to her that it wouldn't even look that bad considering she's trying to help Haley, but she did it because she desperately wants that can and feels bad about it.

"Here." she says, holding the kit out to Haley while eyeing the can and the blood smears on her roommate's neck the entire time.

"...god she's a bitch," she mumbled under her breath after Miriam bolted out of the room, she slid down the wall to sit on the floor and tried to remain calm as she held the can up to her neck. She wasn't doing a great job of getting the flow into the can--probably about half of it dribbled down the side of the can and onto her shirt.

By the time Miriam was back, Haley was feeling pretty woozy, and the room looked like a crime scene. She held out the can, which was about two-thirds full, and started fumbling with the first aid kit.

The scene should be stomach-churning. Or at least a little disconcerting. But the only disturbing thing to Miriam is how little this bothers her. If anything the smell in the room is absolutely intoxicating.

"You do realize I don't need to hear you to know what you're thinking, right?" she coldly says as she kneels down next to Haley and helps her with bandaging up the bite. She tells herself she's not going to look at the can until she's helped her roommate. As... sort of a reward for doing the right thing.
