War Drums

Sam has managed to scare up a pretty basic drum kit from the music department so she doesn't have to bogart the Danger Room. Right now she's got a pair of thick headphones on and is in the midst of a spirited drum solo. She's by no means perfect yet, but she seems to be picking things up quite quickly. She barely seems to register anything else as her arms thrash, an absolutely primal beat echoing out from the music room.

"Hey, Ringo! You're going to burn through sticks like crazy at that rate," Will cat-called, possibly loud enough to be heard over the racket (but also possibly not.)

Her concentration broken, Sam's gaze locks on to Will and her arm shoots out, a drumstick whizzing alarmingly close past Will's head.

Will was a trained superhero, with years of experience. He was capable of moving at lightning-fast speeds when the situation called for it.

He was not, of course, expecting a projectile in the music room.

"Gah!" Will cried out, ducking and covering about three seconds too late as the drumstick shot past his ear.

"Do you mind?" She grumbles, slipping the headphones off and going to collect her drumstick.

"Geez, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning," Will groused. "Sorry to bother you."

"I'm just... blowing off steam. Tereza left on her mission." She starts circling back around towards the drum kit, sticks in hand.

"Ahhhh," Will said, frowning. "Yeah, I can see how that would require...some pounding."

"I mean, at least she told me this time. And brought someone with her."

"A chaperone? Are you more worried for her safety...or for whoever she's after?"

"Well the last time she left she came back a bloody Skrull, didn't she?"

Will frowned, and nodded. "Yeah. And they're like bed bugs; nearly impossible to stamp out once they've gotten inside somewhere."

"So yes, I'm glad someone's going with her. I don't want to go through that again."

Will nodded. "Is it someone trustworthy?"

"I trust Miss Kinney. Don't you?"

"She's...not my favorite person in the world, but I think it's safe to say that she's a good hand in a fight.

And if we have any problem locating them, we can just turn on the news and see what major buildings have been demolished recently."

"What did she ever do to you?" Sam quirks a brow.

"Just...not how I'd run things, were I made king of the world; or at least the X-Teams, know what I'm saying? Call it professional differences.

Also stabbed me once, but I'm fairly sure that was accidental. Mostly. And it was, like, three dimensions over, so not really fair to hold it against her now, is it?"

"If anybody's safe to stab, it's probably you. I mean, less messy and all that."

"And I look fetching when placed over the mantle, too," Will joked.

"Seriously, though. Tereza will be fine; you left her in good hands. I know how it's like to be worrying about someone going somewhere dangerous, though. It sucks! It sucks a lot."

"And I'm telling myself she's going to be fine. I just want to hit things in the meantime, aye?"

"Makes sense, but you are going to run through sticks like a crazy person if you keep going like that. Like a woodchipper."

"...people don't think you're as crazy if you're hitting drums rather than hitting people. Even simulated ones."

"I find them very useful, though I prefer American ones. 50 hertz just feels undercooked and over-spiced.

You're getting pretty good at beating the skins, there."

"It's not that different from a fight..."

"...or a fight's not that different from music, I guess."

"You're going to have to explain that one a little bit to me," he said, sitting down atop a piano somewhat across from her.

"It just... flows like that, aye? There's a rhythm. There's melody. There's harmony. One on one's like a duet. A brawl's like a band. A battle's like... a symphony."

Will nodded, slowly, thinking this over. "And so you're trying to translate that back down to the level of music?"

"It feels like it's nearly the same sort of reflexes. Once I start feeling the flow, it just... goes, I guess."

She fidgets a bit with one of her drumsticks, a bit of muscle playing under her skin that Will hadn't seen before.

Will cocked his head to one side. "Do that again."

"That thing with your drumstick right there. The little thing-a-bob, you know. The thing."

Will hopped off the piano and walked over towards her.

"What? It's just a bit of nervous energy," she says, shifting her weight on the stool and rolling her shoulders as she lets her sticks rest at her sides. It's subtle as Will's seen her day to day, but in this light Sam's arms do look a bit more... built.

"...how fine-grained is your shifting nowadays, Sam? Like, what's the smallest change you can make?" he said, coming in and looking very carefully at her wrists and forearms.

"Well I'm getting better at it, definitely." She says, still looking at him a bit strangely.

She crosses her sticks in her lap, and while it's not quite tickets to the gunshow Will can definitely see it again.

"Why? I'm not missing a detail or something, am I?"

"You've put on some muscle there -- seriously, check it out," he said, grabbing one of her arms and poking it a little. "Definitely a bit harder than normal, yeah?"
