If Trees Could Talk

"Why people insist on the annual ritualistic murder of you guys is beyond me," Shane sighed as he studied the Christmas tree. "I bet you're thirsty," he said before kneeling down and moving aside the decoration at the base of the tree to check the water level.

The water level seemed a bit on the low side, as one might expect from all the lights and everything in here causing things to dry up.

Most people wouldn't notice this, but the tree didn't...didn't look right. At least, not to someone with a more intimate knowledge of plants.

Shane's brow went up as he noticed the tree looked wrong somehow.

"Huh..." he said. He reached out to pluck a needle from the tree for closer examination.

The needle felt real enough, if a bit dry. It also came off the tree without too much hassle.

The smell, though, was slightly off. A faint hint of artificial pine air freshener, perhaps?

"But a really good fake wouldn't need..." he thought aloud. He stepped back quickly and put up his fists before realizing how stupid it looked and lowering them. "No you bloody nutter, the Skrulls wouldn't care about ruining Christmas," he muttered.

"Will?" he asked uncertainly.

The pattern on the wood grain swirled and changed, revealing a secret hidden message.

"Visually? You don't look quite right, but I know plants. But the big thing is... real pine trees don't smell like air freshener."

They smell QUITE like air freshener.  I mean, there's a reason they call it pine.

"Yeah. Marketing," he smirked. "How long has it been since you smelled a real one?"

Probably last y....no.  Not that.  A bit before that, then.

Shane mentally winced at probably opening old wounds and endeavored to change the direction of the conversation. "Though, small inaccuracies aside, you're still damn good at shifting. Getting close to check the water is the only reason I suspected anything."

Well, thank you.  It's always harder to shift into something people know about, and you're quite knowledgeable about plants, aren't you?

"Even with the way that my powers used to work, learning about plants just felt natural. And I always liked plants more than people anyway."

"He's fine. But still pissed about me lying to him. Even though he might be dead if I didn't."

"I suspect that he's more pissed that the X-Men saved the day."

Not a surprise; the muckity-mucks generally don't like the disenfranchised having a voice for themselves.  Especially when they're actively trying to keep them down.

"I agree but I'm not gonna get all worked up about it when it looks like I'm talking to a bloody Christmas tree," he smirked.

OK, I want you to take a moment and think about that.  A Christmas tree with a giant face on it.

Just picture that, up there in your mind.

Nah, trees should be trees and not people.  There's enough trouble with things trying to be things they're not out there in the world, I don't need to add to it.

To be fair, those all sound like things spoiled rich kids would DO.  I've known a few, in my time.

Some of them seem to want to make a charity case out of you.  This one girl I once knew basically tried to pay me into being...let's say civil to one another.

...Pretty callous, I think, first and foremost.  Kind of diametrically opposed from me.

"I should probably start looking into getting a... job," he said with a shudder.
