"I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues"

Before leaving with Colette, Basil had to decide what to do with all his other presents. Leaving them out publicly seemed like a poor idea... Until he noticed several people seemed to be talking to themselves, even ones who didn't have plant or psychic powers.

"Sooooo...." He said, sidling up to said tree with an invisible body and visible clothes. "Hello."

The patterns on the wood grain began to swirl and reform.

Is it that obvious?

The shoulder on his sweater vest pulled back a bit, implying a defensive posture, but he relaxed again when he realized everything was fine.

"No, not really.

But enough people start talking at something that doesn't normally talk back and eventually others are going to catch on." He explained.

"Are you a student?"

More or less.  Close enough for government work, I suppose.

Basil shifted awkwardly, then started into a round of 'British talk too much'.

"So I was wondering, since it seems like you're watching after these things, can I leave my things with you?

I don't want to make you responsible but... Kind of seems like you decided to make yourself responsible. However, I thought I should ask before just leaving them here since I don't really know you and it's kind of an imposition.

I could bring you something from the city to make up for it."

I mean, it's a communal space.  A lot of people are leaving things here, and I've got no problem watching over them.  That's the spirit of the season, after all!

No need to do anything in return; it's just a Christmas tree, after all.

"I suppose." He replied, sounding a bit confused. "I shall return."

and Basil did after some time, with a giant pile of junk in his arms. Two large totes labeled Chase, A big box with Jezabelle's name on it, a couple of medium sized ones with Trev and Shane's names on them. There were also several envelopes labeled Shari, Sam, and Diego. None of them said who they were from, only who they were to.

Basil took a deep breath because he didn't work out and lifting things was strenuous.

"Thanks again mate... You sure there isn't anything I can do for you?"

Actually, if you could go get some fresh water, that'd be peachy-keen.  Otherwise, I'm just fine.

"Oh. Yea, sure." Basil replied, then disappeared into the communal kitchen to get a pitcher and fill it up with water.

When he returned, he stood awkwardly.

"Do you have like... a pot under there or something?"

Well, yeah.  Trees usually fall down if they're not in a stand; it's not like I've got roots going through the floor here or anything.  That's property damage.

Basil shrugged.

"Guess it makes sense that it would be like cut flowers, the topic is just one of those things that's never come up before now for me."

He got onto the ground prone and started shifting presents around so he could find the end goal.

What, you've never had a Christmas tree?

"Oh here we are." Basil said mostly to himself when he found what he was looking for. As he poured the water into the basin carefully, he read Will's question.

"Nope! I'm Jewish."

Basil paused for a long moment as he climbed up from out under the tree and rearranged the things he'd moved.

"... You mean the thing Yanks made up to make themselves feel better about not having a Christmas tree?" He laughed. " Stuff like that is why bubbe moved here. She'd never tolerate it in her house. "

"Yes." Basil sighed.

"To the point she seems to have allowed my gentile lady friend to Hannakuh only to inform her she can't be a part of the family."

Gah!  That's rather horrible of her.

Family can be a real pain in the tuckus.

"I think she means well..." Basil stated, though his tone was apologetic. "I suppose it must be hard losing your grandson twice, even if one of those is more literal."

Mmm.  While that's true, she's not losing you to anyone.  That's not how people work, as hard as it is to accept sometimes.

Basil was quiet for a moment, his dress shirts arm making an unusual, rhythmic motion near his collar. After a moment he says -
" I think I understand what you mean, though I don't think she sees it that way.

And if I am honest with myself, I am uncertain I want to address the topic until I am certain the time is right... if that makes sense?"

With whom?  With your Bubbe?  With your girlfriend?  Or with yourself?

"Bubbe.

I have already decided with myself that if who I end up with is gentile, then so be it. My children will just have to be godless I suppose. "

You'd be surprised at the different ways to find His presence.  I used to think there was one way, too, but that was ever so long ago.

Well, maybe you need to seek something out.  'Tis the season after all - but on your own terms, not hers.

Not being Jewish myself -- you see the decorations? -- makes any of the SPECIFICS I could offer perhaps not as useful as possibly could be.  For me, it was going out and interacting with my old faith and new faith in ways that were unfamiliar -- ways that didn't have ties to my family or past.  It helped me clear my head on what I was taught and what I -BELIEVE-

Basil's collar shifting signaled another nod.

"Thank you. I will try to think about that.

I suppose I should stop pestering you and go pack my things."

Basil made a sound that was clearly a forced back laugh.

"Not in an immediate sense." He replied, then decided since they were being so conversational- "My lady friend didn't want me to take her home for Christmas, so I'm taking her into the city."

"Probably not any official sight seeing, but if she has somewhere she wants to see we'll certainly go.

Mostly, we'll be doing the things normal Londoners do for Christmas. Christmas markets, pantomimes... I'm honestly kind of making it up as I go along based off last year, but Google helps."

Tip from a local: Maldon's High Street often does a vintage Christmas faire -- everyone dresses up in old vintage clothing, and Santa's there, and there's a prize for the best-dressed couple.  I'm sure you could squeeze your girl into something stylish.

My kind of girl, then.  Show her a good time -- and that some things are thicker than blood.
