Nailah is making her way through the dining hall, balancing a tray on one hand with a dangerously full glass of orange juice next to the stack of pancakes, the same thing she's been eating every morning for weeks now. In her other hand she's holding her journal but there's really no reason she couldn't have put that on the tray as well aside from being a show-off.

Laura is thumbing through her phone at the same time, not paying attention to where she's going. She looks up just in time to collide straight into Nailah.

"Whoa!" Trying to keep her balance she throws her arm out, the pancake stack swaying dangerously and OJ spilling, but the glass somehow remaining upright. One leg slides out to catch her balance, leaving the faintest marks on the tiled floor where her claws tried to find purchase. With the arm holding her journal she tries to keep Laura from falling, catching her around the waist.

Laura sags heavily against Nailah's arm, obviously not having cat-like reflexes to adjust like Nailah does. She scrambles a little, trying to right herself. "Oh, god, I'm so sorry!"

"No worries." she mumbles a bit awkwardly before finding her mental footing a little. "All in the day's work, ma'am." she jokes in an obvious 'hero' tone as she helps lift Laura back into finding her balance.

"Ma'am? Seriously?" Laura raises an eyebrow as she rights herself. "I don't look that old, do I?"

"Well no, it's just... you know... a thing. That you say when you sa--help somebody." she stammers her way through an explanation.

"Oh... okay... I suppose... I mean... that seems... You're American, aren't you?"

"Yeah..." she says, seeming mildly confused. "Did I say something stupid?" she asks as she puts her tray down on a table.

"No, your attitude just doesn't strike me as particularly British. I assumed American was the other likely option. It's a mannerism thing."

The accent isn't even consistent to any one particular British one, much less any good.

Nailah nods as she sits down and puts her journal on the table in a way that lets her flip through it without seeming too rude.

"Right! Yeah, that makes sense. Cause you're like a Changeling."

"I'm... not sure, but I wrote down that you can turn into other people..." she says a bit sheepishly.

"Huh. Weird," Laura says. "Want me to go grab you some more orange juice? Looks like I spilled yours."

"That'd be nice. And some napkins maybe?" she says, looking at the puddle of juice that has collected on the tray.

"Can do," Laura says, hopping into the line and grabbing her food and the requested items before returning back to the table. "Sorry again about that. I guess I get a little absorbed by my phone on occasion."

"It's all good. No harm done, right?" she says, tossing some napkins onto the tray to soak up the juice while she munches on a pancake.

"Was it at least something worth getting distracted by?"

"Yeah, but it's more that I just haven't been around. I kinda had to haul butt back home and then I had to chase a lunatic to Lyon and then spend some time in Muir getting back on my feet, although that part's kind of a blur...."

"I went to an institute in Canada. It was a nice enough place, but I was so concerned about not changing faces by accident that I didn't take a lot of time to socialize until my last year."

"Off. That sounds rough. I was mostly just... bored, I guess. I was home-schooled. But not like those crazy people or anything! Just cause of the wings and all and my parents were worried."
