Other Interests

Up until recently maintained as a museum, the childhood home of the Braddock family has been pressed into service as classroom space for the University. Additionally, the increased demands have led to the main ballroom being converted into a cafeteria for University students on a meal plan. The old library has been bolstered with college textbooks.

Other Interests

Will, now back to his normal self, was in the music room, plinking around on a piano.

He was actually not that bad.

Emilie wandered into the music room out of curiosity of who was playing music. She didn't recognize him but she greeted him anyways. "Yo."

"Well, I will certainly admit there are many downsides to being a people. But there are also many advantages too.

Ultimately, no one can really say being a people is better than being anything else, as most peoples don't have the option." Emilie had no idea what he meant by he had only been a person for a short period of time, but decided not to question it and take the conversation at face value.

"I suspect the real answer lies in whether or not you think being a people is better for you and what you want for yourself. Do you prefer it?"

Re: Other Interests

"Do you think so?" She asked, and paused in thought. She thought it a very naive way of thinking. Usually, the idea that all people were lost was something teens tended to respond to in her experience, unless they had some severe depression.

The statement gave a bit away about the other student. If he had been a grown person for a few years and still felt this way, that meant to her that however he got this way in the first place, be it by magic or science, the parties responsible didn't have enough good sense to mentally mature him before hatching. Which meant he was a child in an adult's body... much the opposite of her own problem.

"I don't. I find it terribly romantic.

A thing with a defined or restrictive purpose is limited by the constructs of that purpose. A dog will only ever be a dog. A lamp, itself.

But a people is a thing that is only limited by their imagination and the confines of what their body can do. By defining your own 'supposed to' 's, you become an individual entity unlike any of the others. Other things can't do that. "

Even some people can't. She thought to herself in melancholy, her smile turning just a bit sad at the edges.

"But a lamp knows what it's there for. You say 'limited', but it's fulfilling it's potential. It's doing what it was meant to do. That...

...That certainty of purpose. That feeling that you're doing the thing in life that you are best at and that makes everyone happiest--that's a feeling that, apparently, people never have. That's a bad thing. I...

...I think...I think I had a purpose. Once. I don't know what it was."

Emilie paused again, trying to decipher the boys thoughts on the subject.

"I think a lot of people feel the same hopelessness you feel when thinking on the fact that the purpose of one's life is to define it... But you're confusing a function with a purpose. Unless a lamp contains advanced AI, a lamp doesn't know it's a lamp. It doesn't know anything. A object with no thinking power cannot feel self-gratification at a job well done.

And it's not that people never have it, they just need to find it for themselves. No people would be happy being told what their purpose is. That's also part of being people."

Been a lot of things... A shape shifter then? It would explain the extra finger.

"Ah, but your experiences as a thing are not the same as another's. Which can be said of people too. Unless you asked the lamp in some fashion and the lamp answers back, there's no way to know how other lamps feel about their purpose. Simply put, the only thing you can say as a definite is that you enjoyed your experience as a lamp, no?"

Emilie tried to fight the skepticism on her face. Her hands having abandoned the keys a few sentences ago, she decided to probe this other being to see if he was for real, or talkin' bushwa. She also figured to continue to argue the point would just lead them in circles again, and 'no you're wrong' was rude. This at least might be entertaining.

Having been wearing her giant display of doodads which always announced her arrival, she looked down at her belts.

"If that's the case, what of my things? Anything stand out to you?" She asked, testing him to see if he could really feel the emotional attachment to the objects or any of their significance or meaning. She had to assume this was what he felt when he talked of objects having essence. She refused to believe lamps felt purpose, but she was willing to entertain the idea that basic, unintelligent objects had signatures on them, perhaps placed there by the meaning humans placed upon them. A light might really be 'happy' to serve, if one meant that humans and other beings felt happy in it's presence and tainted the lamp with that emotion.
