West English Breakfast

Two young women were walking through the breakfast line. Only one of them had a tray though. The trayless one had wings and kept putting things on the tray of other. It seemed to be a sampling of everything and once they'd made it through the line, the winged one sat down at a table and the other set the tray in front of her. Then the other young woman just disappeared, leaving the winged one to her breakfast.

"Neat trick," a nearby redhead says, her own tray already loaded.

"It has its moments," she said with a smile, "Miranda." She stuck out her hand.

"Won't fool everyone, though. Only one mind."

She sets her tray down to shake Miranda's hand.

"I'm Sam."

"Feel free to take a seat." Miranda said as a copy of Sam moved to stand next to real Sam. "So you can tell she's not real?"

"Aye, but not with my eyes," she says, taking a seat. Unseen but perhaps perceptible to Miranda, an astral raven descends, then pokes its beak at the construct momentarily.

The construct sat down next to her, waving its hand at where the raven would conceptually be. "Oh, you've got the mind thing going on."

"Like I said, even if it looks real, there's only one mind controlling it."

"I guess I'm lucky I haven't needed to fool someone who can tell that." The image disappeared and Miranda focused on her food again for a moment. "So, Irish?"

"What gave me away?" She asks with a smirk, taking a bite of her eggs.

"Flamin' red hair, bit of an accent. Nothing big." She grinned.

"I suppose I should be less conspicuous, then." She says, her hair fading to mousy brown.

"Now, I'm a little jealous," she said, reaching out to poke Sam's hair. "I've just got these things." Her wings rustled slightly.

Her hair brightens back to its normal ginger as Miranda pokes it.

"Wings are good. Everyone on this bloody campus wishes they could fly."

"So do I, but not really had a chance to do it. Not a lot of good places to practice in Birmingham that won't end up splattering you on the street if you make a mistake."

"Pretty good here. Plenty of open ground, or there's the Danger Room if you want to play it safe."

"...which sounds strange to say it out loud."

"There are certainly words in that phrase that don't agree with each other. Maybe I'll get a chance while I'm here to learn how to use them. Mum has never tried to use hers to fly, maybe I can try mine."

"Ah, I guess there were no surprises when yours came in."

"Or were you a little greeting card baby?"

"Greeting card baby. The other stuff didn't come along until later. Mum hated buying clothes for me. Thankfully the ladies she worked with were good at alterations."

"There's an awful lot of ways to be fabulous on this campus, but all of them are fussy in different ways."

"There's other folks with wings on campus. Maybe pick up a few tips?"

"No, you misunderstand. Fabulous is for when you *want* people to look at you. I'd just settle for looking a little less 'thrift store'."

"Well I don't mean to alarm you, but a nice pair of wings is always a bit attention-drawing."

"No, I appreciate it. We're all given a lot of garbage by all sorts of people for our appearance and abilities. Might as well own the 'you do you'."

"It takes a lot to weird me out. I grew up around quite a few mutant exotic dancers."

She reddens a bit.

"Ooo," Miranda said, mimicking marking something on the table. "Come on, one more and I win 'my mom was a stripper' bingo." Her sense indicated that she was just teasing.
