"Me too," Murphy agrees. She didn't really have any secrets to hide and being connected with Sam just made her feel good. It was a feeling of trust and vulnerability, something she hadn't felt since her parents died.

Sam leans against Murphy and reaches out in earnest with her mind, no longer just reading surface thoughts, but opening it both ways again for the first time since the other night.

"Thank you. For making me finally feel like this is something good."

The same presence that Murphy had felt before is already alert, close. If anything, it trusts Murphy too. There's a feeling of respect, for another hunter.

Murphy accepts the other hunter without reservation or comment. It was just another part of Sam. Like her teeth or hair.

Frankly, Murphy found it amazing that none of the prophecies mentioned anything about Sam.

Murphy shakes her head. These were more specific. A book of prophecies left by their founder.

They had described the decay of their sisterhood. The death of her parents. And when she was alone in the woods, she had found hope in three words written on a precious page. A page she had read every day.

She will survive.

Murphy could understand that. She remembered the first time she was read the prophecies. An old woman in a robe read from the book and told her how and when she was going to die.

It was a bit stressful for a six-year old.

"Sometimes," Murphy says. "Not always."

The prophecies she remembered were in very straightforward language, written like a journal or diary. There was very little symbolic language involved.

"But probably either I don't play that important a role, or they call me something different," her mind seeming a bit distracted at that last bit, though the hunter seems smug.

It did bother her a little. She was supposed to help preserve the cultural knowledge of humanity, but the more she saw of civilization, the more she suspected that things had been left out. Edited.
