Curiosity Killed the Cat

Nailah was expecting Cam to stop by when he was finished, and indeed, he knocked on her door a few days after taking measurements.

What she was perhaps NOT expecting was for him to show up looking like, well...

In his hands he held a thin, silver band, with an LCD crystal dead-center. It was currently black.

"Hey, what's uuuup?" she asks as she opens the door, voice slowly sliding into confusion towards the end as she raises an eyebrow.

"Right, I think I finally cracked it," he said, inviting himself into Nailah's room. "Not with full precision, and more accurate the closer you get to the key inflection points, but I think I have what you're looking for."

Nailah steps aside so Cam doesn't run into her on his way into the room. Nailah's side of things is kind of messy, clothes and school stuff strewn about everywhere. Cam's good news excuses his rude intrusion in her eyes and she grins. "Awesome! How's it work?" she asks before she can stop herself, realizing too late she's not going to follow whatever explanation he might have for her.

"This crystal," he said, pointing to the center of the band, "is psychochromatic. It picks up on your precognition's fifth-dimensional energies through these metal studs," he said, flipping the band over to show a series of metal dots on the inside of the tiara. "As you get closer to the key inflection point, the color and intensity of the gem will change. Better outcomes are closer to green; worse outcomes are closer to red. More definite good outcomes are brighter; more uncertainty is duller."

"Awesome! Wait... how am I gonna see what color it is when it"s on my head?"

"You're the one who wanted a tiara instead of something practical. Use a mirror, or take it off and look at it; it won't magically fade instantaneously when you're not wearing it," Cam shrugged. "Plus, you know. Teammates, or whatever."

Nailah stares at Cam for a moment but then seems to come to the conclusion that this isn't worth getting upset about.

"Alright, fine, I'll figure it out."

"Right. Shall we, then?"

"You bet yer butt!" she says and takes the tiara and places it on her head. "Okay, let's see... What would have a bad outcome for sure? Oh. I know. I wanna scam a bank out of a million dollars." she says and the crystal in the circlet immediately turns red as she tries to catch a glimpse of it with her eyes turned upward as much as possible.

"Yeah, that's a pretty big 'no' there. I could add an alarm, I suppose, but that might not help when you're attempting stealth."

"Yeah, nah. I'll figure it out." she says before giving Cam another once over. "What's with the get-up anyway?"

"We need to go test this out in real-world situations. So..." he said, motioning for the door.

"And that requires protective equipment?" she asks as she heads for the door.

"I don't have crazy reflexes or martial arts training or a set of wings. If someone pulls out a knife on me, I'm stabbed unless I have my tools," he said, as if explaining to a three-year-old child.

"Oh so you wanna go out and look for trouble?" she asks, surprised enough to give Cam's insulting tone a pass.

"That's what you intend to use it for, yes? I was only able to test it theoretically; some real-world applications will help me make any adjustments that need to be made."

"Believe me, I wouldn't stoop to this level normally. I will not, however, give someone incomplete or less than optimal functioning machinery if it can be helped."

"I appreciate it, though I doubt it will be overly necessary," he said, patting his belt pouches. "I believe I am prepared for whatever may be thrown at me."

Cam frowned. "Not as such, no. At least, not safely at this point in time."
