Room 105: Slacking Off

Cam banged on the door of Shari and Will's dorm.

He then waited ten seconds.

And he banged again.

There's a sleepy groan from inside, followed by a thump. Finally Shari, wrapped up in a blanket opens the door.

"Wha?"

Cam threw a yellow spandex jumpsuit at her. "I swear, your lack of regular attendance is going into your performance review."

Shari let's go of the blanket to catch the suit.

"Hey, I'm attending the classes you signed me up for. They're hard."

"I would have thought they'd be elementary for someone who had mastered spaceflight. What were your duties on the ship that brought you here?"

"Oh like everybody here knows what makes cars go. I was just learning how to operate it, not how it works."

"So, what, you were the...pilot? The navigator?

Did you get people coffee?"

"No, I just learned how to run the controls and the scanners. And weapons... That's how it works. Once you're old enough you go with your parents to learn until you prove yourself in conquest."

"What controls did you run, exactly?" Cam said, clearly getting a little impatient.

"You know, controls? Piloting station." she says, miming holding some kind of flight-control in her hands, although the movements don't quite fit those of a plane. "But the ship does most of the work as long as you don't override it. To, say, rev up the jump engines when you're in an atmosphere. Then they explode."

"Piloting then. That'll do. It'll allow me to work the probe's electronics. Suit up, we've got a mission," he nodded.

"A mission?" she asks, though she does start to pull on the jumpsuit. Which involves tossing the blanket on her bed and taking off the ratty t-shirt she slept in. She doesn't seem particularly concerned with modesty. "What kinda mission?" she adds as she zips up the jumpsuit.

"Tosh -- one of the other science kids, you know him -- has an unidentified extra lobe in his brain. He wants to send a probe in to gather more data and see if we can stimulate it."

Cam also seemed to not care about Shari's state of undress.

"Nailah helped me test out the translocator and translator, so that shouldn't be a significant issue, assuming she survived the trip. Would you need to practice with the craft, or can we go ahead and begin the science?"

"I can probably figure it out. Wait... craft? I thought you needed me to steer a probe?"

"Well, yes. A manned probe allows for more precise controls, wouldn't you say? Plus, you don't have to deal with issues like signal delay.

Also, for whatever reason, Tosh is exceptionally squeamish. Beaming radio signals into his head probably would qualify as "too intrusive" or some other anti-scientific mumbo jumbo."

"That wouldn't be my first thought. Or second or third. But you kinda saved everyone from the rest of us, so I can't say you don't know what you're doing." she chuckles.

"Well, lateral thinking is my specialty. And, to be fair, it wasn't my first or second thought either, but you must work with the restrictions placed upon you, I suppose."

"So, how dangerous is this gonna be? I dunno a whole lot about human anatomy aside from, like, the obvious."

"I've crunched the numbers, and the odds that we'll spontaneously expand again are acceptably low," Cam nodded.

"That's reassuring." she says, realizing the sarcasm is probably going to be lost on Cam.

"Don't worry! I've run the calculations twice, and as long as the ship doesn't breech, there shouldn't be any significant issues."

"Sounds good." How dangerous could human anatomy really be, right?

"Excellent! The Mosso II will be ready to go at 13:00. I'll call Tosh and we'll get this taken care of."
