Room 105: Christmas Bounties

Built on the Braddock Estate not far from the Manor, these were constructed for the university's benefit to help house the student population.

"A butt," she said, holding a hand to her chest as she gasped in surprise. "After the olive branch I gave you for Christmas?"

"The music. The painstakingly curated and exhaustively reseached collection of human music.

Because you were enjoying yourself so much with the Karaoke."

Will humphed, and flipped her hair over her shoulder, crossing her arms as she turned her back. "And I'm rewarded by being turned into a human Slim Jim."

"Well, obviously.

This isn't the first time this has happened. For all my obvious skill shifting, my personal image is very flexible. Time and again, people have exploited this fact, altering me. Deleting parts of me. Changing who I am.

Something like this? I will overcome, because I am that good. But when people can alter your mind as easily as they would change a tire, then yes. I consider that a weakness. I have tried to become better at blocking it, but it may be beyond my many talents, no matter how hard I train or how often I try."

While the tone and phrasing was sassy, Will was clearly being very sincere here, speaking with real passion (and not just Jerky passion).

"But... that's not a weakness." she says and for once she doesn't sound like she's disagreeing with Will just for the sake of disagreeing.

"It's what my people strifed for. A long time ago before they turned it into a weapon. Even the deleting part sometimes... To be so apt at turning yourself into something else that you truly become what you appear to be. For our mind to be so in tune with our bodies that you really understand what it means to be that shape. And it comes so... so naturally to you that you think it makes you vulnerable. I had to give up who I was to fit in among humans and ever since it came back to me I've been struggling to cling to that feeling. Because I'm not good enough at this. At changing who I am. At really understand what your people are like."

"But if becoming something else means giving up who you really are, the core that makes you you, then you're lost. When I am a chair or a car or a bundt cake, I am also myself. The core aspects that make me me are the same, merely translated from object to object. It is that core self I clung to when I was thrown into space. It was that core self that keeps me afloat when all else is thrown into chaos. When you lose your true self, you have essentially died."

"You don't." Shari shakes her head. "At least I don't believe you do. Who I am always changes. Maybe I don't have the words to explain it or maybe your language doesn't, maybe humans are just different. But... I'm not the same as I was when my parents were assigned our survey mission. I'm not the same as when I was exiled. And I'm not the same as I was before I kissed Natalie. I'm not this... static thing. I'm me. Who I am can only die when I do, because as long as I exist I just... am."

"Gah!"

Will went tumbling, ass-over-teakettle, into the tub.

When Shari had been fumbling earlier, she had switched it to 'hold' mode, waiting for something to be put inside it before it started up again. Thus, when Will hit the bottom of the tub, the paddles immediately started going to work again, working to push through the solid matter and find something it could start mixing and kneading. Tosh, an excellent mechanic, had designed the tub to handle all sorts of odd situations, and soon, there was a tub full of jerky-colored dough being folded and kneaded as it continued it's earlier cycles.

"So, what goes with flamboyant jerky..." she taps her lips. "And does it even have to be food-stuff?" She rummages through her bag, trying to see what disposable stuff she has and she comes across her old pack of bartering cigarettes. "Perfect. Smoked meat." she nods to herself and tosses the whole pack into the tub.

Shari's mistake nearly immediately was apparent.

While the scent of spicy meat was strong enough, it isn't necessarily unpleasant. But now, as the color of the clay turned a yellowish-gray and ashlike, the foul smell of stale cigarette smoke began to fill the room, as Will began to reek like a three-pack-a-day smoker. Mixed with the hints of spicy jerky, it was a nauseating scent.

"I immediately regret this decision." she says her choice even as her nostrils close up and her nose kinda of melts into her face, making her look even more reptilian than she is naturally. "Wasn't there a wash setting on this somewhere?" she looks over the tub's controls to find the right button to press.

Tosh's interface was sleek and modern, and fairly easy to understand if you sat down and actually looked at the thing rather than hitting buttons at random. There was, in fact, a self-cleaning option, though it looks like it was intended for use when the tub was empty.

Re: Room 105: Christmas Bounties

From the sides of the tub, jets of water and detergent began shooting out, mixing in with the clay in rapid fashion, helping combat the acrid smoke smell. It started to turn a pale blue and bubbled a little bit as the soapy water began to do it's thing.

There was, however, a problem, as the tub started beeping. There was an unexpected amount of matter stuck in the middle of the vat, keeping the included draining and filter system from actually working. If left unchecked, the tub would overflow, so that's not a good thing.

Credit to Tosh for figuring out that an amorphous body might not always come out cleanly, so there was a subroutine in place for just such a situation. The manipulator paddles and arms whirred back into action, vigorously -- and violently -- attempting to squeeze and condense the clay as much as possible, blasting it with more of the soapy water to make sure that nothing nasty and unsanitary was left in it.

The paddles kept working as the cleaning process went on -- and on, and on. Shari might well get bored watching at some point, unless watching machinery in action was her particular thing.

About 15 minutes later, the tub had managed to condense and compact the clay to a moderately-sized cube, still covered in soap bubbles, which the paddles picked up and dumped over the side as it quickly finished it's standard cleaning procedure.

At least the room didn't smell as rank anymore.

After a minute or two Shari did indeed get bored and wander off. When she comes back she's got a paper bag full of stuff she mostly snagged from the communal kitchen. She'd figure out replacing them later. Probably.

She leans to pick up the clay cube and looks it over curiously. "Huh... Will?"
