Air.

Rising in ribbons of tiny bubbles through the dark.

She takes a sharp breath and the cold dark suffuses her, suspends her in the abyss.

Samantha. Such a small name. So insignificant in the face of everything. But she'd help her shed it. She understands.

Shadows move in the darkness beneath the waves, a body swelling, unrestrained for a while. But what breaches the surface is merely head and shoulders of a woman. She opens her mouth and with an otherworldly resonance she sings. The words echo with promise and longing, a dirge as much as a lure. Tonight she will remind them what it truly means to leave the safe harbor...

Sam wakes up on the couch in the common room to the sideways view of the television playing a news report. Her skin feels dry and flaky and in the daze of rousing from her sleep her mouth seems filled with the taste of the sea.
