Leo took a long breath and knocked on Ainsley's door. He hoped he wouldn't shove him away too. The idea of friendship still terrified him, but he had to live with this one.

Ainsley opened the door with an inquisitive look on his face.

When he saw who it was, he smiled a bit.

"Oh, hey mate." He greeted telepathetically in feline, then added. "Wait, does this still work? Testing mic 1, test.

Su-su-sudio, mic test."

"Yeah, I hear you," Leo answered with a nod.

"I'm your new roomie. Guess they figured we'd be a good fit 'cause we know each other and you can actually talk to me."

"Maybe!" He agreed, moving to pick up his stuff off the other bed in the room which he'd been using as an extra catch all for school work. "Glad you got released mate, I was concerned when they took ya to Muir. That's always a bad go ad I hear."

"The poking and prodding and head shrinking was damn annoying, but they just wanted to make sure my condition was stable before they released me into the... wild," he answered as he eased his bulk inside.

"This's gonna be aces! Never thought I'd be forming with a Lambeth Lug. It's surreal."

"Being here at all is surreal after living on the street," he pointed out.

"Right though? After I found Shari here I told myself 'Lee' I said- 'Lee, what's out there to go back to? Sleep prevention spikes and half eaten take-aways from the skip? No thanks."

"Yeah, living there was pretty bad. I wish I had known I could just have gone here. Then... well, y'know..."

"I wish that didn't happen to you. I wish we could bring everyone from Lambeth here... " He lamented.

"No one deserves to live like that, especially just because of their genes," he agreed solemnly. "At least the ones who ended up like me were given opportunities for a better place to be."

Ainsley seemed distracted by some thought it another, then let it go.

"So What do you want to study when you get past the pre-requisites?"

"Not a clue. I really never thought college was in my future. My asshole uncle certainly wasn't going to pay for it."

"I'm good with metal. Trade skill shit y'know. But I... uhh... like to make sculptures and stuff," he said.

"You should check out the shop. I bet you could teach some of the science kids a few things about the labour bit of the crap they do.

Or you could hang out with the biker chick in the garage."

"I've had more than my fill of science at the moment, but I might check that out later. But for now, tell me more about this biker chick. I was actually saving up for a bike before everything went to hell."

He sighed regretfully, "Not much chance of riding one now."

"She's Russian and she turns into a werewolf. She listens to metal music. She tends the Union Bar.

But I think she also has two girlfriend's so I think you're shite out of luck."
He joked.

"No. It came with what the doctor did. He brought the animal out in my head too."

"This."

He put an arm out, pulled back his sleeve, and grew quills from a spot not covered by chitinous plating.

"OooOoOooOOo!" Ainsley bounded over to look, instinctively going to touch before he pulled away.

"They're not poisonous or something, are they?"

He shook his head. "Nah. But for some strange reason, they were acidic when the doctor had me all roid-ragey."

"Maybe you got't'be angry mate?" Ainsley theorizes, then adds.

"Your mum's a bint." With very little conviction at all.

Ainsley winced. "Sorry mate... probably should have seen that coming with the uncle thing.

We'll find a way to get you comfortable again, I'm sure. "

"I'd like to say it's over-rated, but I wouldn't really know." Ainsley replies casually, with neither a smile nor a frown on his face.

"But I never thought i'd talk to intelligent beings like I do now either. The school can surprise you."

"You're not wrong there mate. But Lambeth was always like that, even before 'Mutant Town'.

I suspect it's because there's not as many resources to fight over here. People don't have to squabble and fight and keep secrets to protect themselves.

I can just stroll into the cafeteria and find vegan food whenever I feel like it. In Lambeth I had to fight for salad that was only marginally nommed on. "

"Vegan huh? Afraid I was a hopeless carnivore even before my change. Now I couldn't even go veggie if I wanted to."

Ainsley shrugged.

"It's partially ethical, but also practical.

The thing other creatures fear most about humans is that we are an apex predator. Not smelling like the death of one's comrades helps keep me diplomatic.

You can look at the bright side: Now you can eat all the bacon you want. "
