Flyer of the Atom

Leo carefully stapled a flyer to the common room's bulletin board. He stepped back and nodded in approval. Coupled with the group email he was going to send, the word should get out nicely.

Festival of the Atom
Streatham Common, Lambeth
September 29th - October 2nd

Come celebrate mutant pride with us at the third annual Festival of the Atom! Games, food, entertainment, and even an outdoor market: all run by the local mutant community.

The flyer continued with a small list of sponsors and featured attractions, including live bands, a performance troupe, and even a mutant fortune teller.

"Hey, Leo! There you are!" Well, he's kind of hard to miss Jez, even with the influx of new students - did one of them have a snake for their lower body? The girl waved her arm as she approached.

"Hey! The headmistress told me about the project you're working on, for the folks over at Lambeth, and that you needed volunteers."

Turning to face her, he said with an embarrassed chuckle, "Well, I, uh, haven't actually figured out the volunteer thing yet. But you could help with that. "

There's a distant "Watch out!" coming from the staircase, followed by Robin swinging around the bend on an extended arm, landing on the bannister and sliding the rest of the way down, bouncing to eat up most of the momentum and letting the rest carry her through the common room with a couple hurried steps. "What's up Big Guy? Holmes?" she says on her way past, slowing down when she notices the flyer.

"Tryin' to get us more involved in Mutant Town. And there's a festival soon as a perfect opportunity to be seen and have some fun while we're at it," he explained.

"Coolbeans. They gonna have fair food? I could do with some fried non-sense."

Jezabelle gave Robin a little wave when she made her grand entrance. "I mean, it's not a fair without some food that you'll regret, right? Just imagine what kinda stuff a mutant cook can make...."

"Yeah. Food, games, everything. Ainsley says it's a lot of fun."

"Well I may not know how to run a first aid tent, but if you need bodies - those I can supply in a fair number. And I might even have a spare that gets to be a patron too."

"Well, I didn't mean volunteer at the fair but that's not a bad option."

"I'm sure the festival people could use more for the cleanup crew. And maybe security because havin' X-Men on that would be a bonus. I'll have to ask. As for the community itself, I'm still workin' on that but maybe things like repair work and simple things like volunteerin' at the soup kitchen. I'd pay them back by doin' that but, well, extreme body hair."

"That all sounds feasible enough. I'm actually going to be working with the Headmistress on the outreach project, but picking up litter might make for a good olive branch."

"Good to have you on board. You should probably talk to Ainsley about this too since he actually grew up there. Though unless you know British sign language it might be easier if I act as translator. As he can mind-talk to me," he said, tapping his head for emphasis, "Benefit of my animal side."

"I was gonna say, when you said that Ainsley had been talking to you, that did make me stop and think for a moment." Jez did that thing where she raised a hand with an extended finger pointing upward, but not actually pointing at anything.

"Yeah, my brain's just enough animal that his Doctor Doolittle powers let him talk to me. Hence the seemingly one-sided conversations."

Robin makes an exaggerated expression of pity and holds up one arm, the end of which has turned into a wooden sign with the words

I ALREADY KNOW
HOW TO SIGN

written on it in comic sans.

Jez rolled her eyes, before seven more of her emerged to each pose in the shape of a letter YMCA style, though it did take two of them to make an H.

The Jez's slipped back into herself once she'd made her point. "I'm sure he'll appreciate the gesture, and that you'll get your messages across just fine."

"It's... going." Jez said with a reluctant little shrug. "She's been through a lot. Not unlike a lot of us I guess, but she's got a lot on her plate. But otherwise? I think things might be getting better."

"I... don't know. I'm not sure what the hold-up is, I was hoping we could get some plasma from Muir, but there must be some kind of delay." Jez also felt really awkward asking Katarina about it, hence why she hadn't yet.

Jez raised her hand and started like she was going to speak, but then thought better of whatever she was going to say. And then realized that this was pretty obvious.

"Sorry, I know that topic is a bit..." was sensitive the right word? Not really, considering what Leo had been through sensitive was an understatement for what he had every right to feel.

"Don't worry about it. It's gettin' better, really. I'm actually startin' to recognize myself in the mirror again. Of course, it helps that Ainsley accepts me for what I am. In fact, he makes me feel like something majestic."
