"Don't underestimate the benefits of a good physical regime, even yoga," she says with a chuckle, "I actually studied yoga for several years in India."

Erica smirks, "You would bring that up. What do you want me to say? We were bad for each other after a while. I distinctly remember you threatening to bite me on more than one occasion."

"Hindsight and all that. It seemed like a wondrous idea at the time," she says with a shrug before adding, "I'm still the better witch."

"Mostly because kissing pretty girls doesn't make someone a witch, no matter how much her father would've liked that to be so."

"Exactly," she says, "But there's no accounting for idiocy. Hang around and you might find a new pretty girl to kiss. I'm told there's several, even among the professors here, as unlikely as I find that to be."

"Unless you want to crawl back to me, I think you're going to have to look long and hard to find someone who isn't super young compared to you," she grins.

"Oh," she says, tapping one of the presents, "Delivering this one in person might result in some uncomfortable questions. I'd recommend dropping it off outside her room."

*** After the incident in London ***

There's a business-like knock on Isolde's door shortly after lunch one day.

"...everybody seems to think I'm pleasant to visit," she mutters, getting up and opening the door.

Outside the door was a short-ish woman with iron gray hair braided and wrapped into a bun and secured by two things that looked suspiciously like knitting needles. She's dressed in a black casual suit that makes her look like someone's secretary. She looks Isolde up and down and Isolde gets the distinct impression of having been weighed, measured, and sifted all in that glance. "Miss Schwarz. I believe we have business that needs discussing."

"Miss Weaver will be as good a name as any," she says after a moment's pause, "I'm here about Miss Johansson."

"Ah, so it's like that, then."

She steps back from the doorway.

"Come on in."

The woman nods and steps through the doorway. She smells like a textile mill, all cloth and machine oil... except for the distinct sense of silver coming from the needles in her hair. As Isolde closes the door, the woman faces her. "It has come to our attention that Miss Johansson has selected you as her guardian. Is this assessment correct?"

"I see." Some disappointment registers briefly on her face as she folds her hands behind her back. "And you accepted the position. Why?"

"Can you now?" The woman says, stepping closer to Isolde, encroaching on Isolde's personal space. "Why should we believe that this is anything but another example of your short-term, disastrously poor decision making?"

"You can believe what you want, but the child of earth is awake, and she's entitled to choose."

"Of course she is," the woman says, "But respecting her choice is not approval. Consider this your warning not to abuse her trust... or our respect of her choice. You, guardian, are not what we would have chosen for her."

"Yes, her former guardian left a lot to be desired as well, but we had precious little choice in that changing of the guard as well. This child is causing quite a lot of consternation."

"Even a river can be diverted by applying the right or wrong... pressure." She punctuates the word 'wrong' by giving Isolde another once-over.
