DT1: A Clunker

Will was miserable.

He had tried to explain what was going on to the people at the med center, but weather it was his poor explanation or their poor understanding, he hadn't been able to express to them the clear, utter, life-altering trouble he was in!

Oh, they had eventually run some tests. His joints, apparently, were full of hydraulic fluid, and oil flowed through what passed for his veins. Some of his internals had wiring and electonics wrapped around them. Removing his training suit, they found that the chrome had continued down from the top of his matte-green head to the bottom of his matte-green toes, and he had an air scoop sticking out of the small of his back.

So there he was, sitting in a hospital bed. Why didn't the doctors understand this was an emergency? He wasn't right--wasn't it there job to fix people?

"You look miserable," Rob says, closing the door behind him as he entered.

"I AM miserable." Will confirmed.

"You also look like a Go-bot," Rob says. "That's got to be rough."

"What happened?"

"Ashlie did some modifications on my as a car. For some reason, when I tried to shift back into a person, this is what happened," he said, gesturing down at his chrome-accented body.

"Has something like this ever happened before?" Rob asks. Someone left a lab coat in the room. Neat. Rob pulls it on, checking the fit.

It fit good!

"Never. I've been altered before, but it's never held over to another form. That would have blown my cover really quickly."

"I wonder what's different this time," Rob says, getting a pen-light out and shining it in Will's eyes.

The light reflected back ever so slightly.

"I have no idea. I shift in other forms, and it's not there. The car forms seem unaffected. I'm at a loss."

"Let's check your reflexes," Rob says. He takes out one of those tiny rubber hammers and taps Will's knee.

Will's leg kicked up---with the characteristic whoosh of hydraulic lifts.

"It might be an electrical problem," Rob says, obviously teasing Will now. "Let's check you out."

Rob reaches out with his abilities and tries to see if he can sense anything off about Will.

Will was flickering in and out of Rob's abilities--like his abilities themselves couldn't quite tell if he was an object (which he could sense) or not. Like he was stuck at some kind of limbo state halfway through.

For what it's worth, when he COULD sense him, he could sense that it wasn't quite right--because, clearly, as a person he was weird right now, and as a car he was useless.

Rob winces, "Yeah. That's...that's weird alright."

"They don't get it. They say that I'm in no danger and that I'm not in pain, and that's true, but I'm wrong. I don't want to be wrong!"

"I'm with you," Rob says. "This isn't right. Let me see if I can do anything..."

It was like trying to catch a greased, struggling fish in your bare hands. Rob tries to get a firm hold on Will so he can fix the problem with his abilities. And the fact that it was hard to do seemed to be pushing him to try even harder than usual.

A slippery fish was a good way to describe it--he would have to time everything right, as Will's objectness seemed to be increasing and decreasing at near random. It would take a madman to figure out the pattern.

Fortunately, Rob was a madman.

After a few minutes work trying to get it, Rob's powers would suddenly kick into overdrive--he grabbed it, mentally, and -pulled-.

And, as he slowly pulled, Will started shifting. It was like a slider--if Will was at 25% car at the moment, Rob's abilities were like adjusting that slider to the right, with Will becoming more and more car-like as Rob grabbed and took over his shifting mechanism.

This hurt. Also Rob wasn't entirely sure that this was the desired result, but he was too far gone to stop now. With a wild laugh and blood dripping down his nose, he continued to "fix" Will.

"Wait, what are yooooo..." Will said, as his mouth vanished.

Whereas normally Will's shifting was fast and elegant, skimming over any particularly creepy bits as everything went quickly and smoothly, this was precisely the opposite. Will's hands turned black and rubbery, swelling up to form tires. His face stretched and his skin seemingly ripped apart, forcing his teeth out, which solidified, elongated and turned into the front grill of the rather large vehicle he was turning into. His eyes slid down his face, widening, with the pupils fusing into the bulbs of the headlights, and so forth. It was a much longer process, which might be fascinating, if you're into that sort of thing.

There was also the issue of this happening inside of the dang hospital room. If Rob kept going like this for too much longer, the bed was going to be ruined, as well possibly some of the other equipment.

It was getting easier to control as it approached full car-ness, though.

A bed was of little cost when it came to SCIENCE!

Rob was getting very light-headed.

Good thing he was in a hospital then!

After a few minutes of struggling, Rob would have him Ashlie's tricked-out, carbon-fiber-bodied humvee, sitting in what was left of a medical room. Huzzah! It just barely fit in the room as a whole, and had the side-effect of wedging the door shut, to the concern of the doctors who heard the loud sounds of crashing and smashing as important medical equipment was crushed.

As far as Rob's powers could tell, Will was all fixed! A perfect car.

"This was clearly a very good decision," Rob says, wiping blood off his face with his sleeve.

Now, to figure out how to get out of here.

Presumably, he could squeeze out through the window. Or, he had a humvee pointed towards an outside wall.

Interestingly, Will hadn't shifted back. Equally interestingly, Rob could still feel Will--he hadn't mentally let go yet.

"Alright," Rob says. He got in the front seat and buckled up.

Given a series of options, Rob would always pick the most interesting one.

The keys were in the ignition, and Will's engine roared to life! The power of an efficient, modern day engine built by Rob's girlfriend teacher.

"...n't shift back! What's going on!" Will's voice said over the radio, a green, unlabeled button flashing.

"I don't know," Rob says. "More data is needed."

And that's when Rob drove through the wall of a hospital.

Smash! It's a good thing Will had been on the first floor. Glass and plaster flied everywhere as Rob gunned it, creating a new speedy exit for vehicles at the hospital. He was ~oh so helpful~.

"Rob! We just went through the wall of that building!" the radio shouted.

"We're on the quad! The doctors behind us look very angry! The students around us are wondering what the hell is going on!"

The radio continued to describe Rob's current situation. He wasn't being very helpful!

Rob pulls to the right. Where are all the roads anyway?

"Now what?"
