I3 - Lonely Specter

Built with a generous grant from one of the University's benefactors, this clinic serves as a small teaching hospital as well. More severe injuries are stabilized, then transported to Muir Island. It also houses the University's research laboratories.

"I mean that no one's ever truly going to understand what it's like to be you. And it feels worse to be closer to that and still fail, despite the telepathy. There's barriers between all of us and either you're hurt by being kept away by them or you hurt the other by piercing through it. I've only ever met two people that wasn't true for and one turns out just turned them into a box to hide in and the other didn't really give a damn after all and just sold out to some thugs."

Miriam looks almost a little scared when she realizes what Sam is doing. It's quick to disappear, as most vulnerable expressions of hers tend to do but it was hard to miss.

"Jesus, Sam, you don't... you don't have to do this..." she starts but she can't help and reach out to Sam's mind with her own, too large the temptation, the chance to make a connection. She can feel Sam's mind wash over hers, sweeping her up and away from the empty void that separates people into the prisons of their minds. She's no stranger to it, but it's one thing to pay a visit, wrapped in dividing barriers wandering among paths that stretch between the mind. She knows how to forge new paths, how to affect the things just beyond the road. But now she's tumbling, away from the twisting roads and into the endless forest. It's all around her, full of countless thoughts and worries and joys and dreams and fears and faults and values. Too much to consciously take in. Too much to try and bear.

And inside herself she can feel the yearning to answer the impossible forest stretching beneath and above and around her, to turn the ephemeral dagger on herself and pierce through the barriers of her own mind. To let the shadowed columns and twisted, ivy-clad walls spread out among the ancient woods and let her own doubts and hopes and sorrows mingle with the denizens of the forest.

But as she falls and floats and glides through Sam's mind she grows scared. The shadows aren't just full of promises. They're deep and dark and might just swallow her whole. The arms of her avatar instinctively wrap herself tighter in her robes as the shadows around her grow stark and menacing, possibilities turning into uncertainties, chances turning into downfalls and the pain of letting herself go becomes too much for her to bear, too small, too scared, too alone to venture forth even when invited. She shies away and fights back against Sam's mind.

"S-stop... I just... I... I can't..." she quietly whimpers.

Sam shudders, and it takes her a moment to finally muster her defenses again, to fully separate her mind from Miriam's. For a fleeting moment, her facial features shift to look rather like the other girl's before she forces them back into herself.

"I... I'm sorry, I..."

"...I thought that was what you wanted."

Miriam barely even notices until she feels Sam's hand on hers and even then she only barely glances at Sam for a second. She doesn't pull her hand away at least, though she's not really sure what to say.
