The figure in the fencing gear, face hidden behind the fencing mask, steps back and forth along the mat. Sword out in front, she goes through the routine of battling an invisible opponent. She's actually decent at it.

Slowly as she practices, birds start to gather in the corner of her 'vision.'

She can occasionally catch one if she turns just right, a blur of black feathers. It's increasingly obvious that any spectators don't see them, though a couple turn to look in confusion.

She stops, tucking the blade under her arm as she tries to get a better fix on the birds.

The birds seem to calm down a bit while she's no longer practicing, but they haven't left yet.

Ravens. Roosting all around the gym. An amateur might wonder, but Melissa can tell they're a mental projection.

Behind her mask, she considers them for a bit longer before making contact. "Hello. What bring you here?"

This sends a ripple of disturbance through the birds, and it's a moment before a coherent thought is returned.

"Oh! Oh, I'm... I'm sorry. My mind must have wandered," comes a feminine voice with an Irish accent.

"Ah. I must be 'speaking' with Miss McManus then. A pleasure to finally meet you."

"I guess this is... Doctor Terrance? I'm sorry. I didn't mean to disturb you."

"Not a problem. I had been meaning to check on you and see if you were doing alright, but I believe we have both been quite busy." She finds a seat, resting herself before projecting herself a bit more, her avatar forming in view of the ravens.

"...I guess I've earned someone checking in on me after the time I tried to sneak in and use Cerebra."

"But aye, been a pretty strange first semester."

"From what I've read, Cerebra is not for the faint of heart, so you at least have some of my respect. Strange semester, anything you want to talk about?"

"So I noticed." Her avatar gestures at the birds. "But telepathy tends to turn symbolism into substance."

"When I was working with Muir and my tutors, a lot of what I had to do was get myself on a firmer foundation so I could get my shifting under control."

"So I guess I'm finding I'm more... changeable than I thought?"

"Sense of self is a a good foundation for telepathy as well, but even the avatars of non-shapeshifters tend to be slightly morphic. I'm not surprised that yours is more morphic given you're other abilities."

"I'd be lying if I didn't say it feels pretty right sometimes."

"Just kind of hard to let go a bit."

"Let go of this... smaller sense of what defines 'me.'"

"I feel like I had a bloody vise grip on it when I first got here, but I'm not sure it works anymore."

"When telepathy is involved, it never pays to have too hard a grip, because that tends to make you brittle."

"There would be some serious concern if you did, especially with your shapeshifting. Have you been keeping up with your telepathy tutoring?" It carried the air of a question to which the adult already knows the answer.

"Nothing terribly wrong with that, but you might miss some of the finer points. If you'd like to pick up with it again on a regular basis, I certainly have time in my schedule."
