I'm Swinging On My Shadow

It was early by Tereza's typical standards, but there wasn't much reason to linger in bed anymore so she'd taken to hitting the gym before breakfast. Today she was working in the normal strength weight area. She adjusted the weight on the bar, stepping under it and positioning her shoulders before lifting it out of the rack and starting to do squats.

As is often the case, Tereza can feel Sam coming before she sees her.

She doesn't have to wait long though, as Sam arrives in workout clothes and sits down across from Tereza.

Apparently she's content to just watch, for now.

"I would have though this is a little early for you to be up," Tereza says in that strained tone that indicates she's actually pushing herself and this isn't just for show.

"Funny thing about that," she replies.

"Not quite as pleasant to lie in bed in the mornings anymore."

"Can't argue with that," Tereza says, hefting the bar back into the rack and stretching. To Sam's senses, Tereza's mind is actually pretty quiet.

"That's a new best for you, isn't it?"

"What? Getting up before breakfast starts?" She dusts her hands off and begins pulling the weights off the bar.

"I meant what you had on the bar there, but we can count this too," she smirks.

"New roommate alright?"

Tereza makes a face, "No, but I've had worse roommates. I suppose she's okay as far as it goes, but I'm not sure what analysis possessed them to put us in the same room." She glances at Sam, "You want me to set the bar up for you?"

"Aye, well... I've got to learn how to make peace with Miriam again."

"So yes, let's let out some frustrations."

"You have my sympathies." Tereza looks at Sam appraisingly, "Probably need to push it again and see what you can handle." She tosses weight on the bar, though not quite as much as she had.

"I guess I have been getting more fit," she shrugs as she gets up.

"Wouldn't mind if it wasn't coming with hair."

"And you get no sympathy from me on that," she says bluntly, getting out of the way to let Sam line up and moving to spot for her.

"No? Why's that?" She quirks a ginger brow as she squares up to the bar.

It takes her a moment to put the words together. "You want to drink off your wolves, you don't get to complain about the hangover," she says, "Spread your feet out a little."

"It was easier when it was just us, is all I'm saying."

She corrects her stance, and starts hefting the bar up, some of the definition in her limbs showing.

"Granted, there was only a hot minute between that and the new assignments. I'm not sleeping in the buff around Miriam."

"I'm sure she's disappointed by that. I'm just glad Viv's not here. She's safer where she is."

"Yeah, I can't imagine the paperwork they had on her was all that great."

At first it seems like Sam is straining a little, but soon she gets up a good rhythm. Lack of practice, perhaps.

"Plus, they wouldn't have been thrilled about her keeping a sword."

"Probably not, no," Tereza says, watching the bar more than Sam.

"I mean, we should probably give her some warning."

"But she's probably somewhere her cell won't work."

She sets the bar back down, straightening up.

"I think I could try a little more."

"I don't think she'll be back before the school year ends, but that's mostly a guess," Tereza says, adding some more weight to the bar and making sure its secured.

"Guess I'm talking to my mum and dad about a trip to Wales over the summer, then."

Sam grips the bar and grits her teeth for a moment as she gauges the new weight. She seems a little unsure of herself for a moment, then successfully hefts it up. More muscle tone shows, and since Tereza is focusing mostly on the bar she'd see faint ginger stubble on her girlfriend's hands and knuckles.

"Shifting to add muscle is kind of cheating," Tereza says, frowning at Sam's hands.

"I wasn't... I wasn't trying to there," she says, rising from a squat.

"I guess I could try to... zero out, there. If you think it's bad form."

"There's still like... muscle memory and the like. I do train, you know that."

"So okay, something wrong with my stance here? I caught that frown."

"You're not just adding muscle, you're adding hair," Tereza says flatly, "So I'm wondering if you're leaning into me to get more."

Sam finishes her current repetition and safely sets the bar down. She holds out her arms in front of her and looks at them, seeing the stubble and the tapering nails.

"Okay, that wasn't intentional either."

She works on shifting them back in fits and starts, but at first it just comes back worse. It isn't until she finally steadies her breathing that she manages to make it go away.

"There. Sorted."

By that point, Tereza is standing, arms-crossed and quietly watching her, disapproval in every bit of her expression, though disapproval of what exactly is hard to tell.
