Sept 3rd - You're the Best Around ((open))

Nailah is in the Rec Center, wearing a loose-fitting t-shirt and gym-shorts. She squaring off against one of the punching bags, apparently trying to find a fighting style that works for her. It mostly ends up being just a mish-mash of punches and kicks she's throwing at the bag. Her movements are swift and fluid but there's little discipline or form to them. She takes a couple steps back and gets a small running start, jumps and tries to kick the bag with both feet at once, her wings flapping to help keep her aloft. It works alright, at least until she actually lands the kick, at which point her momentum runs out and she lands square on her butt.

"I almost had it though." she tries to excuse her embarrassing display as she lets Tereza help her up.

"Yeah, but your opponent's not going to stand there and wait to be kicked in the face," she said. "It's flashy, but flashy only wins fights against cowards. Learned that the hard way," she said, lifting one side of her tank top slightly to show a scar across her left side.

"Oh wow." she says, leaning in just a little bit to look at the scar. "How did that happen?"

"Fight at my old school. Someone decided to bet big right from the start and using powers was sort of the nuclear option in a 'playground' fight. I thought I could intimidate him into backing down. I was wrong." She smiled, "But he was the unconscious one when it was over."

Nailah snorts out a laugh. "Where there a lot of fights at your old school?"

"A few. It was just how things were done," she said with a shrug. "I think someone had a hard-on for survival of the fittest, which is weird for a mutant school, but it was a pretty bad school. I moved on to better places when the opportunity presented itself."

"No..." she frowns. "I really wanted to, but my parents thought it was too dangerous to let me go there."

"That sucks. I would have killed to have been able to go to the Institute. It sounded like the Promised Land," she said. "Hell, I'm almost convinced this place may be some sort of dream." She adjusted the tape wrapped around her hands.

"I know, right? It's so amazing!" she says, then notices the look on Tereza's face and mistakes it more for awe than the fear of another shoe dropping, reaching over to pinch her arm.

Nailah's hands are not quit human. They're not quite as furry as her legs but there's fine blonde hairs on them and her fingernails are almost more like claws. They're also painted with what appears to be black glitter nail-polish.

"I approve of the nail polish," she said as she let her hands go, "Okay, we'll start with how to punch someone without breaking your hand. Best place to start," she said as she proceeded to show Nailah how to curl her fingers.

"Right. Thumb outside the fist, yeah?" she says, her claws retracting a bit as she closes her fists. She takes up a stance that looks a little bit like it's from a Bruce Lee movie. In her defense it actually looks fairly stable, especially considering that her legs have her standing on her tip-toes almost by definition.

"Hold that for a minute," Tereza said as she gathered up a set of the square pads and slipped them over her hands. "Okay, let's see how you punch," she said, holding up the pads.

Nailah takes a couple dancing steps and throws a punch at one of the pads. She leaves herself wide open in the process, but the punch itself is surprisingly solid.

Tereza smacked her with the other pad. "I've got two hands and so will your opponent. Hell, they may even have more. Keep your eyes open."

Nailah flinches back but still gets caught by the edge of the pad. "Ow, hey!" she says before Tereza's words sink in. "Right... Right. Arms." she adds and throws another punch. It lands kind of awkwardly because she spend most of her focus looking at Tereza's other hand.

"Better, but focus more," she said, repeating the exercise, but continuing to counter in various ways with the pads, making her work for her hits.

Nailah seems to be a fast learner. Once she's figured out what she needs to do the how comes almost instinctively and soon she's dodging Tereza's retaliatory strikes with ease while throwing quick jabs at the pads.

"Good, good," Tereza says, stopping after a while. "You're a fast learner. I've taught one other person and I had to beat her up repeatedly before she learned."

"No, really. The school taught us how to fight. It was one of the things we weren't supposed to talk about. There were a lot of things like that. And yeah, I did get into a bunch of fights."
