Checking Up

Natalie sits at one of the tables in the lounge area with a coffee cup next to her and a laptop in front of her. She types rapidly, which is probably a strange sight for anyone who was used to how Natalie interacts with technology. She stops typing briefly, taking a sip of coffee before going back to typing as she looks more deeply into the new Brotherhood party that had crossed her mental news feeds.

Sam spots Natalie and waves.

"Hey there, long time no see. Going low-tech?" She gestures at the typing.

"A bit, maybe," she says, "Somehow I started consuming data, so I'm seeing if it's just a side effect of using my ability too much while still getting some work done. How are you doing, Sam?"

"Consuming data? Like... literally? Not like 'oh, I'm over my data cap this month'?"

"I've been doing pretty well. Kind of hectic leading up to the holiday, but not bad."

"Literally," she confirms, before changing the subject, "Yeah, I'm not sure what I'm doing this holiday. Things have been... unexpected lately."

"Oh? More people coming over for Christmas than you figured?"

"No," she says, chewing on her lip for a moment. "I have a girlfriend to think about now... I think."

"Oh! That can definitely complicate Christmas plans. I convinced mine to come over, at least."

"It's kind of a 'in the last few days' sort of thing, so it's still new. I'm not sure she'd care if I went home, but I'd hate to do that to her too... It's complicated."

"Maybe you could do something special with her on New Year's Eve?"

"That's not a bad plan. Mum probably wouldn't care if I brought home a girlfriend, but that might be a bit much."

"I'm kind of lucky my parents already know. Lets me breathe a bit easier, aye?"

"Yeah, that would be good. I think she'll be happy that there's *someone* at all, but it's still nerve wracking."

"You seem a little surprised that you fell for a girl," she says frankly.

"I guess? She sort of approached me and it's not... bad... just not what I was expecting, I suppose."

"Sometimes you'll miss out on a good thing if you don't let yourself be surprised."

"I suppose there's some truth to that. It was just kind of a weird thing. We were fighting and then she kissed me."

"...sounds like my kind of date," she chuckles.

Natalie looks at her like she's grown a second head, "Like verbally fighting, not punchy fighting. I don't really do punchy fighting right now."

"Doesn't matter. People fight because they care. Not that strange to find out she likes you."

"My mum's opinion of 'fighting because you care' would probably be a bit different. Hard to shift gears though after I'd given up on anything like that happening."

"That's just when it blindsides you, aye? You don't notice someone looking at you like that since you think you're not the kind of girl someone would."

"I think part of it because I always thought it would be a guy. Girls wasn't a thing that ever really occurred to me. Not that that's a problem... just not something I thought about since I spent so much more time around guys at the Institute."

"The workshop boys are a little... yeah. I could see feeling like you were invisible there."

"I mean, being one of the guys is okay some of the time, but... yeah." She sighs, "Shari seems willing to put up with my stupidity though, so there's a lot to be said for that."

"Oh it's Shari? She's really nice. Fun to be around. Easy to forget she's from outer space."

"Every once in a while that shows up in a big way, but yeah, she is fun. It is a complicating factor though. Hi Mom, I have a girlfriend and she's from outer space."

"Well you know it's not... overly dishonest to leave out to your mum that she's an alien."

"Yeah, but mum and I... well, it was just the two of us when I was growing up, so we talked about everything. It'll feel weird if I don't tell her."

"Just... if it does start to get serious, don't wait that long. I feel like Shari's only just now gotten to be herself, so it'd be good to acknowledge her."

"I think she may still be sorting out who she is," And when she gets it figured out, she won't need me anymore, "but I'll definitely take that under advisement."

It takes Natalie a moment to register that, but then her eyes narrow slightly. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Some things should probably not be picked up on," she says, frowning. "What I think of myself is my business."

She gives a non-committal shrug, "We'll see." She opts to change the subject, "Have you heard about this new Brotherhood party?"

"There's a new Brotherhood party? I've had a few run-ins with a decidedly older Brotherhood."
