The towering chimerical mutant walked into the XUB's pub for the first time, accompanied by Ainsley. As they positioned themselves at the bar, he asked, "So what's good here, foodwise?"

"I probably don't eat the same things as you. I usually just eat a basket of chips."

"That... actually sounds great about now. And a burger too. 'Cause I'm almost literally always hungry now."

"Probably takes a lot of energy to upkeep your body I suppose." He says, tapping his finger to the basket of fries on the menu to indicate what he wanted to eat.

"Makes sense. Cost of being so big."

Leo ordered the same and a cheeseburger. And a beer.

"I even had to arrange for a bigger bed. And don't get me started on the shedding."

"Guess I'll invest in a lint roller." He quipped back.

He smirked, exposing a fang in the process.

"So what've you been up to?"

"Not a lot. Duckin' the authorities mostly.

You?"

"Regainin' some control over my life. Piece by piece."

"If this is too far let me know...

Did the shite tell you who he sold the ball to?"

"Someone from the apartment building. Why?" he responded with a curious narrowing of his eyes.

"Oh, I just thought perhaps I could get it back by convincing whatever store purchased it that without authentication papers, it wasn't valuable except for sentiment."

"Nothing that easy, unfortunately. Mister Entwistle wouldn't fall for anythin' that simple. Pretty sure he hates me as much as my uncle does too, so a plea to his better nature won't work either."

"Names not familiar to me. Your aunt isn't Lambeth then?"

"Oh, no, they live in Enfield. Lambeth was just where I drifted to."

"Quite the little drift. You were practically in the country." He observed.

"Well, okay, drift might be the wrong way to put it. I went to Lambeth on purpose, since I figured it was safer to be a mutant there."

"Did you like it in Enfield?"

"It was alright. A little nicer than where I grew up in Boston, but even when I let myself start makin' friends it never felt like home."

"I always wondered what it'd have been like to grow up somewhere nicer..." He added. He didn't have long to think on it before a basket of fries was placed in front of him.

"You grew up in Lambeth then?" he asked as his own fries were put down. His nose twitched.

"Oh my god those smell amazin' with this nose."

Ainsley smirked at the food based observation."Yes.

Quite convenient for me when all my kind just started filling in around me. Gave me an edge of sorts."

"How old were you when that started? Or, for that matter, when you first knew?"

"I was born mute. I didn't gain the ability to talk to animals until I was sixteen.

I figured it out when the voices I kept hearing correlated with animal behavior around me. There were stray cats around our councils."

"And now you're here, talkin' to a great big one," he grinned. It was the closest he had come to acting casual about his new appearance.

"I was sixteen too. I got chased and cornered by this huge-ass stray dog. It pounced on me and then yelped and backed off. I just laid there confused, watchin' it limp away. Then I noticed a bunch of bloody quills growin' outta me where it was on top of me."

Ainsley choked down his first concern, as he knew it's only upset Leo further.

"Is that when you ran away to Lambeth?'

"No. I... hid what I was for almost two years. Until my uncle got mad enough to smack me and end up like the dog. Why it came out then and not in the fights I kept getting myself into I don't know."

"Defense response." He replied. "You saw the fight starting, so you knew it was coming."

"Not in a while. I wasn't as angry all the time after I got outed. I guess I was... projectin'?"

"Sounds like she's doing her job well then." He replied, nibbling on a fry and looking thoughtful.

He watched Ainsley for a moment and, after a mouthful of fries, asked, "What?"

"Oh sorry. It still kind of throws me off I can talk to you.

I get lost in my thoughts sometimes and I'm not used to people noticing."

"I can see how it could throw you. I'm still getting used to your mouth not moving, which is weird enough."

"Want me to pantomime talking?" Ainsley asked, then attempted it.

"how is this?"

It was terrifying. Having never been capable of making sounds with his mouth, the timing was all wrong, like a stream where the audio and visual feeds were off.
