DT1: A Different Kind of Wild

Located directly adjacent to the Rec Center is the Student Union building, housing a well-stocked bar and arcade, billiards and an open area with couches and coffee tables.

"Okay," Murphy says cheerfully. She shakes her root beer. It seems to be empty.

"Drink?" Murphy asks.

Murphy shakes her head. She speaks carefully, like she's forcing herself, "Do you want a drink?"

Murphy shakes her head, "I know."

She fiddles awkwardly with the bottle. Why is talking with people so hard? She likes people.

Stupid brain.

Like that. Murphy's thoughts feel warm and fuzzy. Despite minor embarrassments and occasionally feeling out of place, she's genuinely happy to be here.

Murphy returns with sodas for both of them.

Sorry. No ID.

She feels apologetic.

Yes.

She had grown up on a sustainable, organic diet of fruits and vegetables they grew at the compound. Not to mention the meat from hunting.

Hippy, Murphy jokes.

There was a truth to it. As soon as Murphy said it, her memories of life at the compound crept around the edges of the word. It was a New Age sort of life before her parents died, full of a lot of crystals, meditation, and socialist-utopian ideals.

And pot. They smoked a lot of pot.

It wasn't.

She had been happy there. Even with the weird prophecies, strange sermons from the sisters, and intense survival training. They were her family and she loved them all. Even if they left.

How'd you grow up?

"I don't have anything to complain about, really. There was plenty of stuff to get into. There's a river we used to go to, and make fairy boats out of leaves to race between the bridges."

Her memories flash across the mental link as she recalls.

To be a city girl?

Murphy sympathized. She read a lot about big cities in books and when she was younger, she sort of wished she could see some of them.

You know. Before they were all destroyed in the coming apocalypse.

Crowds are hard.

Murphy remembers getting her powers. Fighting off a bear. Experimenting with different animals. Going from a teenager slowly starving in the woods to a powerful predator.

She loves her powers. She's very proud of them. And she's also a little sad that Sam obviously doesn't have the same sort of enthusiasm.

Always does.

That's one thing Murphy understood. Things were hard at first, but they got easier. Whether it was learning to track a deer or dealing with your dead parents. It always gets easier.

You're amazing.

And Murphy genuinely did think that. She didn't understand the specifics, but she knew that Sam had a tough time of things. She knew that it was hard for Sam to be around people and she admired the way Sam still seemed to be trying to reach out to others. Even when it was hard 'cause they had trouble talking,
