Burning Angel Wings To Dust

Miranda lined up her shot on the pool table, aiming carefully, considering the angle, and then slamming the cue ball hard enough to make it skip the bumper and jump off the table. She growled to herself as she began to move around the table to chase the errant ball.

"Gah!" Amy jumps a little when she walks into the bar and is immediately attacked by a stray cue ball. Not that it poses much threat to anything beyond her shins, but still. She manages to awkwardly put her foot in the way and stop the ball from running any further, leaning down to pick it up.

"Sorry about that," Miranda says, walking over in no great hurry. "My aim was off and it got away from me."

"No kidding." she chuckles nervously, mostly just because she's a bit jumpy still and because she's not sure how not to stare at Miranda's wings. "Figured you weren't aiming for the door."

She reached out for the ball while her eyes following Amy's occasional eyeline to her wings. "I don't know how I managed to get rusty at the game, but I'm hoping it will come back to me."

"Oh, you used to play?" she asks, handing the ball back, glad to have a topic to talk about.

"Off and on. Was never particularly good, but I enjoy it. You?"

"A little. But not like, seriously or anything. Wanna play? You'll look much less rusty next to me, I bet."

"Sure. Beats playing by myself," she said, heading back towards the table. "I'm Miranda, by the way."

"Amy. Are you from around here?" she asks, by which she probably means Great Britain rather than Maldon or the general area.

"Yeah. From Birmingham. You?" She started setting the pool table back up while another girl appeared, picking up Miranda's cue and pulling one off the wall for Amy, offering it to her.

"S-seattle." she says as she watches another person appear and hand her a pool cue. "Uhm, hi. Who are you?"

"Nobody important," the girl says as Miranda takes the pool cue from her. The girl moves to pull the rack off the balls, heading to hang it on the wall. "She is, mostly, a figment of your imagination," Miranda adds as the girl finishes hanging up the rack and disappears.

"I... but... what? Then how come she's handing me stuff?" she asks, grabbing the cue with both hands as if to tests how 'real' it is.

"Hence the 'mostly' part of that. The folks at X-Corp had some sort of scientific sounding description that I tuned out almost immediately. Something about telepathy-enhanced illusory telephoresis or something like that." She blew a raspberry at the concept, "Who cares. It's a power, occasionally useful. Why dig into it any more than that?"

"Oh yes, that's me doing it." She leaned over and made the break, stepping back for Amy.

"So you got wings and, uhm, people projection? That's pretty neat." she says, lining up a shot and just kinda slamming the cue ball into the balls scattered around the table with little planning.

"Inherited the wings from my mum. They're pretty useless. The only thing they do is limit my wardrobe choices," she said, lining up her shot and nearly sinking one of the balls.

"Never tried. The X-Corp folks said 'maybe', but I'm not sure. The prospect of burying myself into the ground when I inevitably screw it up doesn't really appeal."

"It's scary, but man, flying's the only good thing about this whole mutation thing. You gotta try it."

"Well, for me anyway. Sorry, that came out weird. Here, watch..." she says, taking a deep breath to steady herself before slowly lifting off the ground, her feet hovering a couple inches above the floor as she gives off a faint white glow.

Miranda looked impressed, "That's pretty cool. I like the glow."

"I don't, but that's because of the other stuff it does, which is blow shit up..." she says, setting back down on the ground.

"So we have something in common then. You don't like your glow because it's side effects, the same reason I don't like my wings."

Amy nods. "I didn't even think of that. Must suck..."

Miranda shrugged, "You learn quickly that quite a few people just wish they *were* us. It's jealousy at the root of it."

"I dunno... Maybe. Seems more people are scared though."

"There may be some of that," she allowed, "but I would wager that some of those people are 'scared' *because* it's easier to believe they're scared than to tell themselves they're jealous. You're told all the time growing up that it's okay to be scared sometimes, but you're never told it's okay to be jealous."

"Hmm. That does kinda make sense... I mean, it's stupid to be jealous of this for a lot of reasons, but I can see that."
