Miriam is sitting in one of the booths of the bar, a glass of wine in front of her that she occasionally sips from, halfheartedly leafing through a textbook.

Alex find himself wondering over to the XUB if only to find a place where it wasn't so silent. The events of today had riled the small crowd in his brain and he'd rather not give them a chance to use the silence of his bedroom to voice themselves. It's just unfortunate that at the bar he can only order a soda and not anything alcoholic due to his age.

Miriam glances up from her book when what feels like a weird chorus of voices echoes through the periphery of her mental senses. She ends up staring at Alex as he walks up to bar and orders something to drink.

Alex takes a seat at the bar, laying his head down on the cool marble as he tries to sort the mess. By the time his soda is set down in front of him, he can feel a pressure pulsing behind his eyes as a headache slowly swells.

Miriam picks up her book and her glass of wine and walks over to the bar, sitting down next to Alex. "You look like you've had quite the rough day."

"Hey, can we get a beer over here?" she tells the barkeeper, who briefly looks like he's about to object but then blinks and goes to draw Alex a pint.

He blinks, surprised, because he knew she wasn't ordering for herself if the wine was any indication. "Um, thanks, you do know I'm not old enough right?"

"Hear's not really the right word, it's more like that feeling you get when there's a conversation going on in the next room and you can make out the fact that people are talking but not what specifically. And sometimes you pick up a word or two. Unless I focus on one of the voices at least."

"That's pretty much it, though it gets more complicated than that." she chuckles. "Minds are tricky and I don't read thoughts so much as that I have a knack for picking up on what goes on inside someone's mind in general. When I push it it becomes almost more like dreaming. Things become... metaphors. Without going too deep I'd guess that your mind creates distinct identities to help you with animating your constructs, right?"

"It's where they send all the head-cases like me, among other things. I had some issues discerning between myself and other people. It's... not a particularly pleasant feeling to be losing yourself in your own head and they helped me find the mental discipline for it. It's a hospital for mutants whose mutation is trying to kill them."

"Oh...Well that sucks." It summed it up at least. It was confusing to think that a mutation would kill off the very thing keeping it alive. Mutations were so widely varied that without having children that mutation would die with that person. The whole thought sent his mind whirring into thoughts of natural selection and possibilities. For the moment all the constructs were muffled by his own thoughts.

"It was 7 years ago. They told me that there was nothing they could have done, but I know that was a lie. I've come to terms with it now, but for a while I didn't do so well. Projected my grief and guilt into those around me."

He nodded sympathetically, "So you ended up going to Muir." It was more statement than question, the results of the accident was clear.
