"i'm sorry." Was Basil's go to response. "I didn't mean to do something like that. I'll try not to do it again."

As he repented for whatever it was he thought he'd done, his body fell invisible again.

And the Muzak that only Sam and Haley could hone in on stopped abruptly.

"...I'm not scolding you. I'm just trying to figure it out."

"Is there something I should be doing?" Basil asked, confused.

"I didn't do anything on purpose, other than sing. I'm not sure how to replicate it again."

"Okay, when it happened there was like... musak in the air. Mental musak. I tried to feel it out but I got you saying 'Hello!' to me and sounding rather chuffed. I tried to respond, but it just kept repeating that. It was like I got your mental answerphone."

"Exactly when it happened? When did the ... muzak stop?" Basil hated that word. Mostly because he (like any rational person) hated muzak.

"Well it kind of lingered, aye?"

"Until... er... you went invisible again just now."

Basil fidgeted. "I've never been tested for telepathy before." He admitted.

"The school offered an initial physical when I enrolled and I declined it. I spent practically every weekend and some week nights from the age of fifteen until I was seventeen being treated like a science experiment. I got it knocked down to once a month after I started attending Oxford. I didn't feel like getting poked at anymore and I suppose since I'm an adult they were OK with that."

"It's the first I've sensed this from you, so they'd probably have missed it anyway, aye? Didn't even know you could become visible until you took a header."

"Neither did I. It hadn't happened before then. Not so far as I know anyways."

Bear finished up, sad she hadn't arranged for a Garfunkel to join her.

She replaced the microphone, and joined the others.

"So it's not like you were piping musak everywhere and nobody noticed."

"I hear the telepathy tutor on staff is nice. Won't care if you're visible or not, either."

"Alright." Basil sounded more like he was relenting than anything. He didn't much like the idea of anyone else going in there more than they needed to... but if he could control this and turn it on all the time, would that be so bad?

"Just think about it."

"I'll go tell Haley your head's not about to explode, aye?"

"Yea, okay." He said, his body turning back towards Colette.

"Sorry." He said to her now, for reasons unknown.

Colette gave Basil a sympathetic look.

"Come, let us have a seat. You have been the center of attention for long enough tonight, you deserve a break."

"But I like attention.

Sometimes." Basil replied, letting Colette lead him to an open seat, he sat down as he was instructed to do.

Jez was feeling a little more relaxed. After a couple of very... showy performances, Sam and Bear's renditions were more along the lines of something she could do. She'd been going over the song list in between applauding the performances and sipping her wine and thought she had the song that would work for her. In a little lull of murmurs and drinks being ordered she took the stage and was thankful that the mic stand was still present. While conversations were taking place at tables a familiar piano beat began to play, perhaps to the chagrin of some students who weren't fans of mid-nineties pop.

"Yo! I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want!"
"So tell me what you want, what you really, really want!" Asked a second Jez.
"I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want!" Replied the first.
"So tell me what you want, what you really, really want!" Inquired a third.
"I wanna, ha I wanna, ha I wanna, ha I wanna, ha!
I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ah."

By the next verse there were five girls surrounding the mic, taking turns singing each portion until they all harmonized during the chorus. There wasn't much of a performance; no dancing around the stage as the original artists may have done, and the alcohol hadn't helped Jez's singing voice. But when more than one of her was singing at a time the harmony helped buff out the bad parts and leave just the good. One of them even removed another's hair elastic to give herself a pair of pigtails.

"I have to learn how to do that," Will said to no one in particular, applauding.

Toshiro Narumi wrote:
Haley Crusek wrote:"Yeah," she replied, not technically lying. "Just a lot going on hard to focus."

"Kay. I'll just get my drink on and be quiet," he answered before starting on his beer.

Haley was focusing intently on the Basil - Sam issue for a moment, again leaving Tosh with a mostly silent date. She finally realized he sounded like a neglected puppy and flashed him a smile, "I'll make it up to you later when we're alone...maybe we can reenact some of the things that happened in our brains in the real world this time."

Haley looked over as Sam spoke to her, nodding and replying back,

"Good...thank you. Brainsplosions are bad."

When Jez finished her song she left the stage looking embarrassed from the applause, her selves becoming one as she descended the steps and made room for the next performer. She wasted little time and headed to the bar to croak out the word "water".

Chase took the stage next, looking more nervous than anyone present had ever seen. In the spotlight wasn't where he wanted to be and it was obvious. But he persevered and made it to the microphone as the song began.

"Felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders…
Pressure to break or retreat at every turn."

He began with a shy, bland performance. But with each verse, as his emotions became invested, the normally quiet youth's singing improved dramatically. By the end, his voice was cracking with withheld tears. He lingered on the stage for a long moment before slinking off to the restrooms to gather himself.

Basil watched his friend, but didn't stop him. He let the boy sing, as much as it seemed to be hurting him to do it.

He did not applaud this time when the young man finished.

Instead he excused himself from Colette's presence and followed after his friend to check on him.
