Broken Boy Soldier

During karaoke night...

Basil would find his friend staring at his haunted reflection in the bathroom mirror, the water he had splashed onto his face still dripping from his chin. The normally alert boy didn't seem to notice his visitor.

"Chase," Basil spoke to him as he stopped. "It's Basil mate."

He didn't ask Chase if he was ok. Clearly, he wasn't.

As he stood waiting for his friend to acknowledge his prsense, he became visible, and the deep look of concern painted on his face illustrated why he was here.

"Not now Basil," he pleaded. Although it was clearly intended to be anger, it just came out sad.

Basil's frown deepened, obviously hurt by his friends rejection. He stood his ground however, hugging his own arms to his sides. He waited patiently for Chase to do whatever he felt he needed to.

After a long moment, Chase took a long, trembling breath and rather miserably said, "I bet they're all having a good laugh at the poor little orphan boy."

"I bet they're all too drunk to notice at this point." Basil countered pragmatically, taking off his jacket as he got closer to the other boy to join him at the sinks.

"They'd have to be pretty drunk not to see that I'm just that broken."

"You didn't see how many Bud Lights Haley packed away in an hour." He quips, coming up behind his friend, draping his jacket on his mate's shoulders and giving him a reaffirming squeeze with his hands before letting go of the other boy and digging his comb out of his pocket to fix his hair.

"How far have you read into those Harry Potter books, eh?" The question seemed non-sequitur.

The thoroughly unexpected question elicited a perplexed and befuddled, "Wha?"

Basil turned on the water at the sink he was standing at, and began futzing with his hair.

"Just wondering if you ever got to the part where everyone in Hogwarts was mad at or funnin' Harry because some heartless shitbird killed his parents and that's somehow his fault because he's not supposed to be upset about that."

"No," he answered, "Why would... why are we even talking about Harry Potter?"

"Because you're acting like somehow that's what is happening here, and it isn't and that is entirely my point." Basil replied, his wet curls now dangling in his face as he looked at the other boy. He laid his comb on the sink edge and forced Chase to face him, holding his shoulders and looking him dead in the face.

"No one thinks less of you for being what you are, and no one thinks less of you for having emotional responses to perfectly valid things to be upset about. You're acting like someone expects something else out of you and no one does.

The only one thinking less of you for being upset is yourself. If you want to cry, then you should cry. God knows you've got a good reason to do it. Cry for however long you feel you need to, and as many times as you want to. Get it out mate.

But crying and then getting angry at yourself for being vulnerable is exactly what they would want you to do. They are the only ones who would think you're weak for this. By doing that to yourself you're just allowing them to control you in some new, fucked up manner."

Chase seemed unmoved by most of the speech. However, the last part hit him like a slap in the face. Basil was right. Thinking of emotion as weakness was their influence, their continued ice cold grip on his heart. And he wouldn't be truly free until he could break that grip.

This realization brought forth a new bout of tears and the taller boy would find a former assassin embracing him and getting tears all over his nice clothes. "It's not fair! I fight and I fight and it still feels like they're winning..."

Basil got his arms around Chase and hugged his friend close to him, not really caring about his clothes. He leant his cheek against the Chase's forehead.

" It's because they've already won the battle you're trying to fight Chase. All you can do now is move on to the next one."

"That's just the accent. " He joked for a bit of levity. "Nothing is ever as easy as a Brit makes it sound.

But you are strong Chase. You will overcome."

Chase peeled himself away and wiped his eyes with his sleeve. "You really think so?"

"Yes. " Basil replied pulling away a bit from Chase to look him in the eye.

"Have I ever said something I didn't think was true before?"

"No. You haven't," he admitted.

After an awkward silence, he said, "Hold up. You're visible."

"Mmmyes, that keeps happening." He said, looking at the curl hanging in his face while still holding the other boy around the waist as if it were offending him.

"Sam thinks I'm telepathic."

"Really? Wait. What does that have to do with it?" he asked, not yet registering how the embrace might look if someone walked in.

"Damned if I know, but according to Samantha, her and Haley feel some kind of... creepy juju coming off of me when I do this."

Chase really shouldn't have pointed it out to Basil, because now he held him tighter.

"Why are you forsaking our love Chase? Don't you want to run away with dishy Basil and have lots of invisible ninja babies?"

"We're not in love?" Basil asked, arching a brow but doing a good job of keeping a straight face.

"Damn, that ass tattoo is going to be awkward to explain to Madame." He said, looking sidelong mostly to keep himself from laughing. He was still holding Chase now, wondering how long it'd take him to pull away.

"Tattoo? Basil I'm flattered but...?" he said as he started to pull away, but stopped. "You're messing with me... aren't you?"

"Yooooooou almost fell for it." He replied, giggling like a little boy at his own joke, taking his hands off Chase finally and moving away from him to fix his hair.

"You may be capable of rising above the machinations of a shadow organization but even if I liked boys, you couldn't handle the Prettiest Prince."

Basil said, his ego showing some as he looks at himself in the mirror, smirking back at Chase as he preened.

"You're definitely a handful," he smirked back.

"In the middle." Basil replied honestly, placing his last bit of hair where it should be and twirling his comb between his fingers.

"After you let emotion in, but before they overtook you. Performances are best when you can have an emotional connection to the material."

"It happens. I avoided picking anything related to the ex because of that." Basil replied, before realizing he'd said it.The look on his face indicated he'd made an error in mentioning her at all and he cleared his throat.

Basil frowned, and his eyes stared at the ground as he gave Chase a Cliffs Notes version which was simultaneously more and less than Sam had been given.

"She was my boyhood crush. We lived together for a year, but I can't really describe properly what kind of a relationship we actually had. We'd talk, go on dates... other things." Basil kept that portion brief as he knew by now how uncomfortable the topic of sex made his mate feel.

"But while I definitely considered myself to be hers, she did not consider herself to be mine. She did things I didn't appreciate both behind my back and in front of me, but I couldn't pluck up the nerve to ask her to stop because I didn't feel it was my right to.

It ended when my personal staff alerted my parents that someone was living in my flat whom they felt was taking advantage of me. My parents kicked her out, and then sent me here as punishment."

It was the first time he'd acknowledged any of this out loud. As he spoke the boy went invisible again, empty clothes taking his place.

Chase listened quietly as his friend unloaded. He could certainly return the favor for all the times the shoe had been on the other foot.

"So that's where all that punishment talk comes from? For something that wasn't really your fault at all?"

"Of course it's my fault mate. I may be girl-crazy but I'm not enough of a self involved idiot to blame women as a whole for my personal shortcomings as an individual."

"Just because she was the worst offender doesn't mean she was the only one.

When it comes to ladies, I'm weak. Not good at saying no."
