I Want Coffee For Christmas

Natalie had finally been evicted from the workshop, so she'd retreated to one of the lounge areas in the XUB. Procuring some coffee, she sank into one of the chairs and drank deeply. She didn't exactly look like hell, but she hadn't been sleeping a whole lot either. She'd been more or less living at the point, showering there and going right back to work. Now, cut loose, she wasn't sure what to do with herself, so she continued to sit.

Sean had taken over most of a table in the coffee shop on campus. He sat nursing a rather large thermos of coffee as he idly sketched the other people in the coffee shop. The table was taken up by other sketch books that contained designs for enchantments in various degrees of completion, complex calculations for formulations of the ingredients the enchantment required, and other sundry notes.

As Sean took a sip from his coffee one of the sketched figures left the drawing as the person it represented left.

Natalie stands, going to move to a different vantage point when she catches sight of Sean's deisgns. She stops, looking at the assorted designs with a puzzled expression.

Sean had a eureka moment of sorts and pulled one of the designs toward him. He waved a hand overthe schematic a small magical circle forming under his palm as he did so. Runes spun around the edges of the circle as and the schematic twisted on the paper and fitted onto a glove drawn on the same piece of paper as the prototype enchantment. Sean waved his hand back over the schematic and several of the runes changed slightly adjusting to whatever Sean saw.

"Might fix the melting problem," Sean said not really aware he had an audience.

Natalie couldn't help herself. "Melting problem?"

"Enchantments build up heat the longer they're being used. Too much heat and the enchantment can explode or just melt distorting the runes. The hard part is that how much heat the enchantment builds depends on the runes you us. Whether you create the enchantment with synthetic or natural diamonds, the purity of mercury you use or... lots of other factors, " Sean said realizing whoever was asking probably didn't want a long winded explanation. He turned to look at Natalie realizing he should probably also look at whoever was talking to him. At least he hoped somebody was talking to him and he hadn't just rambled out loud to nobody in particular.

Despite the glowing runes, Natalie couldn't help but ask, "Is this like some roleplaying thing or something?"

"Er, no," Sean said pausing for a moment feeling a bit wrong footed. "Magic, real magic not the kind involving dice rolls."

"I suppose not, though for some of those things one can at least attempt a scientific explanation. I'm basically a glorified wireless antenna if one is looking for a simplistic explanation, but the the science gets a lot more fiddly."

"And I'm nothing more than a conduit for ambient and extradimensional energy," Sean smiled. "Just like with your mutant power things involving of magic start getting rather... complicated once you start trying to dig deeper."

"So what are you trying to 'enchant'?"

"It's going to be a glove," Sean said, "The enchantment should create a physical shield. I've enchanted rings with a similar enchantment, but the ring can only handle so mucht. Theoretically with a larger space to enchant I can make a more potent enchantment, but practice and theory aren't really aligning as they should."

"Maybe you're using the wrong materials? That's a thing I'm struggling through right now."

"Could be," Sean said, "I'm not an engineer or materials person, so usually I just use steel or aluminum for larger enchantments. Might be good to find something a bit... stronger or that is more difficult to melt."

"Ah, after frying a couple computers growing up I learned that magic and most electronics get along... poorly," Sean said, "Dissuaded me from learning things beyond how to use word and browse the internet."

"One day maybe if I figure out how to harden electronics against getting burned out," Sean smiled. "Be interesting to see what could be done if you could combine magic and computers together."

"That would certainly be something. The head mistress mentioned something about a couple of new residents on campus. One of them shorted out a tablet just by touching it, but maybe they've found a way around that?"

Two?

"I've met one," Sean said, "We're becoming quite the hot spot for magical entities. Might be they're using some kind of physical protection for it? Probably wouldn't protect it from a working enchantment though. Unless you could design a material to dampen magic or figure out how to harden electronics like with electromagnetic pulses?"

Sean paused in his rambling after a moment.

"Er, sorry, uh, what kind of projects are you working on?"

"Building body armor from the ground up, quite literally. Looking to start physically prototyping the leg mechanisms after the holidays. Been kind of all-consuming lately."

"When you say body armor you mean like Iron Man's suit?" Sean asked sounding amazed at the idea.

A couple tables away Sean suddenly notices a young woman intently staring at him. Other than that she's just kind of sitting there, no food in front of her. The people next to her seem to be involved in their own conversations to either side, leaving her in her own almost isolated seeming bubble. Her eyes look vaguely empty and her expression doesn't seem to change much when Sean spots her despite the fact that she's definitely still directly staring at him.

"Aye," Sean said idly noticing the woman staring at him. "Seems hero or a villain you need to develop a... brand? Maybe style is a better way of putting it."

He tried to ignore the woman staring for the moment. People are just odd after all, right?

Ignoring the woman seems to work, in the sense that the next time he glances that way she's gone. Until he spots her in his peripheral vision, sitting at a different table in a completely different row, still staring.

"Surprised we haven't seen more endorsed heroes," Sean said, "Seeing as most of us aren't Tony Stark or..."

Sean spied the mystery woman again and stared back at her quizzically causing him to pause mid-sentence.
