"Sometimes those people make the best authority figures."

"I still dunno. I'm not even that good at art," he answered, more humble about it now than when art came up before.

"It just takes practice, you know that. I didn't just start drawing as i do overnight, and if i stopped my skills would deteriorate. "

"No. Guess I should though. My clothin' options are pretty damn limited. Nothin' off the rack for this cat."

"I see her head out to the point a lot. Or in the gardens talking to another catboy. Smaller than you but I bet she has experience making him things as they seem pretty friendly. Maybe she could make you all kinds of things actually."

"I'm going to pretend you didn't just indirectly call me a catboy. And yeah, she could. Even a hero costume."

After a second he said like a certain tiny, animated fashion designer, "No capes!"

"You are literally just arguing to argue so I don't win at this point." Ainsley looked at him over his sketchpad with an expression of mild exasperation mixed with amusement.

AInsley stayed silent. Incredibly silent.

After a few moments, Leo started to get the impression that this is what it was like for everyone else around Ainsley.

The silence was so total that Leo's fear of rejection began to pull at its rusty chains.

"So you get a little annoyed and that's it? The silent treatment?" he asked accusingly, an edge of paranoia on his voice.

Ainsley looked confused, and now he was silent just because he didn't know what else to say.

After several long moments of confused staring, he offered- "Sorry mate?"

Ashamed of his moment of paranoia, Leo didn't repeat himself.

"Nothing."

"You okay? Looked like you zoned out there."

"Well at first I was funning you, but then that happened so I was quiet because I didn't know how to respond." Ainsley replied, clearly not going to let Leo weasel out of this so easily.

Leo seemed to get a little less huge.

"God... I probably sound like a clingy girlfriend..." he said, deeply embarrassed.

"Yea, a little mate. He replied in earnest.

"Just a reminder, again: I can't actually speak. Most people experience silence from me.

If I'm quiet, it isn't because I'm mad. I'm disabled Leo."

"Fuuuck, now I'm an asshole too," he groaned, falling onto his back as if dying of embarrassment.

Ainsley shimmied from his spot closer to Leo, not saying anything.

Until he got close enough to reach out and boop his nose.

"Boooooooooooooop."

Leo turned his perplexed cat face on Ainsley.

"Did you really just 'boop' me?" he asked with a trace of a smile that he was clearly fighting.

Ainsley did it again without the sound effect this time, leaving his hand on the other boy's nose.

Ainsley made a reach like he was doing to do it again, but pulled back his hand quickly without making contact, just to see how Leo would react.

Ainsley leant out and did it anyways, laying his hand gently on Leo's snoot, as if to dare him.

Leo's bestial side should have been getting agitated, but it seemed Ainsley had at some point tamed it. It would be happy to be this one's pet.

Confused by this, Leo rolled on his other side. "Just stop, okay?"

Ainsley pulled his hand away and shrugged.

"Sure thing. Sorry mate." He didn't seem put out
by being told to stop, picking up his sketch pad again to go back to work.

"But it's your body and therefore your call as to whether or not you are touched."
