Canyon of the Crescent Wrench

Tereza is working in the garage, putting some new parts onto the bike frame to replace the old garbage that Skreza had taken off. She checks a couple of the parts against the specs and then nods, moving to start bolting them onto the frame. Rock music plays from a small speaker on the work table and the scent of new metal and fresh grease hangs in the air.

Sam walks in, smiling as she spots Tereza. She's wearing a sweater that Tereza hasn't seen her in before.

"Wondered where you'd gotten to. Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance?"

"More like zen and the art of motorcycle construction." She glances up as she gives a bolt one more twist, "New sweater?"

"Sort of," she says, pulling it off and setting it on the workbench.

"It's safe now, Will."

The 'jumper' (crazy Europeans) shifted and twisted, and Will -- still a few inches shorter than normal -- ended up stretching and popping his joints on the bench.

"Travel takes forever."

Tereza watches the transformation with a raised eyebrow. "Did you stow away in my luggage?"

"Nah. I was apparently sent parcel post. Someone's idea of a Christmas surprise."

"Miriam put him through the post. He doesn't remember why, and I didn't really have a good opportunity to go through his head with my family around."

"Miriam," Tereza says with a frown. "Hopefully all she did was send you parcel post."

"I feel fine, which wasn't always the case with Miriam's goatee-wearing double, so, you know," he said, hopping down from the bench. "Could be worse, though if I ever see her again, I'm going to tell her to splurge for first class next time."

"From the note that came with the package, I wonder if she thinks I sent you."

"It just said 'I believe this is yours', right?

I suppose, if she was technically being accurate, she would have sent me to ASHLIE. Or the US Military, but that's probably not attention she'd want to bring down upon herself."

"I mean, in theory, he is yours... in a manner of speaking," Tereza adds. "And she probably associates him with you."

"I wasn't really in a position to tell my family that a friend got posted to me."

"You apparently tripped the weirdness circuit breaker, 'Reza," Will joked. "Even my relative normality would have been too much."

"Yeah," Tereza says, refocusing on the motorcycle. "Still hate that that happened."

"I'm not blaming you, honestly. I just don't think my family's quite ready for our jetsetting mutant lifestyle."

"And I meant it as light bants rather than actually getting on your case. Sam fed me cookies and kept me hidden under her mattress for a night; no harm, no foul."

"She tends to go into cooking mode."

"It was in pretty bad shape. I'll settle for running, but modern specs would nice." Some of the bike was in decent shape, but it had the air of a junkyard rescue.

Will sniffed at the oil. "Was it working before you disassembled it, or are we Frankensteining it?"

"We're frankensteining it, because it wasn't working and I couldn't tell precisely which parts were good and which were bad."

"Mmmmm," Will said, hrming disapprovingly. "People need to take better care of their stuff," he said, carefully dusting off one of the handlebars.
