"Alright. " Basil hesitated at first not because he didn't want to tell her, but because he was collecting the proper analogy in his head that she could understand.

"It's.... Like...

Like hunger." Basil replied, equating it to basically her favourite thing, food, seemed like a good way to get her to follow.

" What comes before and after and the in between times when we must remain reserved are wonderful, but I couldn't survive like that.

Stolen kisses between classes and snuggling behind Chisaki's back tide me over, like snacks. But as you once said to me, one can't live on crisps and nuts no matter how delicious they may be.

Eventually I'm going to have to eat if I want to survive, even if it's a disgusting take away by myself that I'll probably regret later."

Colette looked confused for some time as she listened intently. It took her a little while before she puzzled out Basil's anology, the take away by himself bit particularly confusing her. But when she did get it, she got it.

"Oh! Oh! I zink I see now! I..." She resettled herself, eyes rolling back a bit in thought as she pondered the best way to describe how this applied to her.

"I never get take away. Ever. There are times I wish I could, given what I have read online about the benefits of a... diverse diet. But even the most deluxe take-away doesn't sustain me, at all. I have no hunger for it and even if I tried to eat it I get no nourishment from it.

"I worry that you think that, the moments we just shared, are only as good as those stolen kisses or covert cuddling. That is not what I meant. What I meant was that, with you, those little kisses, holding hands... they are every bit as euphoric as not long ago, under this very tree.

"You told me, once or twice, that you really didn't care about food. That you would only eat out of necessity if left to your own devices, and cared not about what you ate so long as it filled the void. That it was because you dined with me that you suddenly cared about quality, and flavour, and had a more robust appetite. Well in your analogy just now, the same is true for me. Your company, your touch, is what nourishes me. Yours, and no one else's. Shared with you, a sneaky back of crisps is every bit as filling and decadent as... our Christmas dinner."

Despite all of her pauses and meandering, Colette thought she got her point across. She smiled softly to Basil. "Does all of zis make sense now, mon chou?"

Basil was listening, though she could still feel his finger tapping her nervously.

Until he suddenly stopped somewhere around the point she said the phrase 'yours, and no one else's.

He looked down on her nestled on his chest when she addressed him.

"It does....

I...

I just worry I'm coercing you into doing something you wouldn't otherwise. If you've not a taste for it, I don't want to be forcing you or tricking you into it just because I have one, however delicious I might present things. That isn't right."

" I could also remain an employee of the University. They may no longer provide housing for a lowly library assistant, but I could take up residence in Maldon for another two years until you finish, or until the current Librarian retires."

"I could do all manner of things, even just sit around and do nothing at all.

The luxury of money is not having to do bloody anything." He smirked, brushing his fingers against the bit of her surface she would refer to as her hair.

"I think for now we wait. Maldon isn't London, so securing housing if we need it should be a non-issue. I will speak with the headmistress or whoever is acting in her stead about my role here at the campus and if I am to be promoted upon the completion of my studies.

It was a spoken possibility when I started due to the head Librarians advanced age that were I interested, I may be able to remain as a campus employee once my studies were done. She'd obviously still be in charge, but I'd have a bit more leniency to work. And I'd get to boss the volunteers around. " Basil was obviously joking, no one would take bossing from him.

" I never told Headmistress specifically whether I was interested or not, thanks to the contingencies."

Basil looked at her casual state with his brow still knitted, trying to puzzle things out for himself.

Confusion changed into some sort of warm smile. He expected her to be upset by having to tell him, but she wasn't. He supposed it was something she had come to terms with a long time ago, and nothing to worry herself about further. If she ever had in the first place.

"You're being quite honest today. Any other revelations you want to tell me beyond the fact that I could be way lazier at our relationship and that I might be ruining the rainforest for no reason?"
