Clothes Make the Beast

Leo wandered the quad, hoping that a clear day meant that Ainsley was outside sketching. As with Chisaki, he was sporting his new (fashionably retconned) black and paisley shirt and sporty sarouel pants. And he was anxious to see his boyfriend's reaction to his sweet threads.

Ainsley was indeed outside sketching. He was very focused on a set of squirrels happily nibbling on leavings they procured from a trash can.

Leo's shadow fell over the grass in front of Ainsley.

"So... how's today's episode of Forage Wars?"

"Productive.

One-Ear found a piece of pizza-crust. That's easily a cool $20 in squirrel currency."

"Nice going squirrel dude."

"But I'm afraid he's got nothing on me," he grinned.

Ainsley looked up, and slowly began to grin.

"Look at you, handsome!"

"I know, right?" he laughed, "Chisaki did a friggin' amazin' job."

"She did a bang up job.

Feel a little under-dressed myself now actually. Guess I'll need to step it up."

"Awesomeness comes from within." He replied in his street corner philosopher fashion.

"So, where you taking me?"

"Oh, right... uhh... I'm takin' you to... The Rose and Crown?" he responded uncertainly, as if trying to lie to cover his lack of a plan but giving up halfway.

"That definitely sounds like a committed answer you didn't just make up on the spot." He teased.

"I certainly didn't just want to show off for you with no plan beyond that," he agreed.

"Of course not. Why would you do that? That's just silly." He said.

Leo knew they were joking around, but that last comment brought him up short and drove away his jovial mood.

Ainsley sat quietly, taking it all in.

"You're really going to need to learn when to take it on the chin if we're going to keep this up. I wasn't even trying."

He sighed. "I'm sorry," he said apologetically, a little embarrassed, "I know you didn't mean anything, I just... abandonment issues, yanno? They come out of nowhere sometimes."

"... If you so heavily distrust me not to to the point of you reading into things that vague... what's preventing me from getting fed up with your lack of trust?"

His eyes widened in mild alarm. " I trust you more than anyone, Lee. There's just this part of me doesn't trust... well, trust. I'm trying to manage that, but it's not always easy."

Ainsley's expression went a bit cold as he continued to sketch the pair of red squirrels happily munching on the leavings of students, and occasionally making soft chirps at one another.

"Do you know what that sound means?"

The cold look in Ainsley's eyes did nothing to assuage his worries that he was going to screw this up and drive away the best thing to happen to him in a long time.

"Uhh... here, try this?" he guessed, clearly off-put by the sudden shift of topic.

"One-Ear is trying to get his end off." He replied with a crude euphemism that Leo would probably recognize by now.

"Any guess why One-Ear has one ear?"

"She bit it off when he wouldn't take no for an answer?"

"Close.

One-Ear can't make a distinction between male and female. He doesn't understand what they mean. All One-Ear knows he is that he is supposed to shag other things that look like him.

So, once, when he thought everything was on the up and up he discovered while trying to move forward with the mating process that the other male squirrel didn't like it, and it cost him his ear."

"So he's an overly aggressive gender-blind squirrel. Why are you telling me this?"

"One-Ear isn't overly aggressive.

I mean look at the bloody thing, he's huge. if he was overly aggressive, he'd be the one VanGogh-ing other squirrels, don't you think? "
Ainsley wasn't wrong. The squirrel with one ear was easily double the size of the yet unnamed squirrel. Probably all that pizza crust.

"He's sitting with another squirrel. He's sharing his find instead, not luring it in to jump it.

I'm telling you this because One-Ear is still sitting with another squirrel despite one attacking him ferociously, not shying away from it's muk-muks or attacking it to make sure he gets the first blow in.

You could learn something from One-Ear."

"Well yes.

I was more thinking 'being a paranoid git doesn't get you laid', but it's the same concept."
He replied, going back to the jesting tone he usually took.

"I'm not afraid you'll betray me or anything like that. I much more worry that I'm going to screw this up one way or another."

"And if you do?

You think every relationship always works? What if I screw it up?

Do you think giving myself an ulcer over it would prevent it?"

Ainsley sighed.

"Can't relate." he joked. "I went from being non-communicative to being exceptionally chatty with pigeons. Quite a different juxtaposition..."

"And cats do tend to make better conversationalists than birds." He observed, catching the subtle reference.

"It's kind of awkward the way your tiny brethren frequently want to talk about themselves. They remind me of fantasy novel dragons in that way.

But birds are little gobshites, they are basically the worst. "
Ainsley added. "I try not to break my veganism but this is why when I do, I rarely feel bad eating eggs."
