DTI: A Small Plot of Earth

The Estate's meticulously kept gardens, including a hedgemaze that students have occasionally described as "sadistic" and a sizable rose garden. Benches in shaded spots are plentiful, and the gardens are popular to study in on pleasant days. The nearby stables are still maintained with a number of well-heeled equines.

Rob was on the grounds setting up some sort of grid. It was a fairly small area, 20'x20' at most, and each corner was marked off by a complicated looking antennae, Rob was currently using string and posts to make a grid inside the area, similar to the kind archaeologists use for dig sites.

((Hope it's not too late to join! If it is, feel free to ignore))

Molly came over and looked over Rob's shoulder. After a few minutes, she spoke up. "So. What are you doing?"

Rob jumps in surprise, drawing something vaguely gun-shaped from his coat.

"Jesus! Don't do that!" Rob says. "Wait...who are you? Have you been here the entire time?"

"Robert West. Supergenius," Rob says, putting away the weapon. "You should be careful. That's a good way to get disintegrated."

"And to answer your question," Rob says. "I'm having trouble with measuring a pesky little bit of dimensional space. So, I'm gonna punch a hole in the universe and see what happens."

"Science," Rob says. He hits the button.

There's a flash of bright light within the field and a very minor shockwave. As the light fades, it leaves behind a hole in the universe.

Alright, it's more like a portal of some sort. It seems to lead to a desert on an alien world. All of the sand is silver and there's multiple suns in the night sky. It's only open for an instant though and then everything collapses, leaving behind nothing but a scorched spot on the lawn.

Rob grabs a printout and starts reading the collected data, "Oh, that was incredibly dangerous. There was like, a 70% chance it was going to kill everything within fifty meters of the epicenter."

"That's why I did it on the quad. What if something went wrong in the lab? I could've killed dozens of students and staff. I'm not a monster."

"You know the different dimensions, right?" Rob asks. "You start with a point. That's the 0-dimension. Add another point and you have a line. Length, the first dimension. And so on and so forth."

"There's a lot of dimensions. Maybe even an infinite number of them," Rob says. "And they all exist simultaneously. The dimensional plane you exist on determines your perception of them. We see time as linear, but on a different dimensional plane it might be something you can move in as naturally as walking. Or, take the psychic plane, that's a dimension where all mental energy exists on an integrated plane. From the perception of the psychic plane, one mind isn't really differentiated from another, and all thoughts are just a matter of distance and form."

"I've been working with some equations I developed that let me predict the relative location and fundamental properties of different dimensional planes," Rob says. "But something was screwing with my attempts to access all the dimensions simultaneously. And according to this, it's because there's an extremely high-energy dimension. It's completely off the charts and beyond anything I calculated. Heck, with these levels It might be the source of all energy in the universe."
