I2: Watch them, catch them unawares (open)

Emilie was absently passing out bags still, but her attention was obviously focused elsewhere. Perhaps stalkerishly.

Inside the bag, Victor would feel an orange, a bag of Walker's Ketchup Crisps, and a something papery floating around in there.

"Oh! Well, it's not really that exciting, I just... hmm." Victor cupped the orange in both hands before suddenly clasping them together. There wasn't any juice, no pulp, nothing. He could make fruit disappear! He tilted his hands as he might when holding a baby bird, and removed his upper hand. There on his palm was the orange, though only about the size of a blueberry. It remained that way for a good for a good five to ten seconds before it visibly shook, suddenly "popping" back to it's original size, almost rolling out of his grasp.

"So I can shrink oranges. And also myself."

Haley's eyes twinkled as she munched on her bag of chips. "Oh my god, that's cool! So like. How small can you shrink? Are you like. Still as strong as you are big when you are small?"

Victor's cheeks flushed a little bit. He didn't think his abilities were very cool, but it felt nice to hear others say they were.

"T-thanks. I can go down to, like, a couple of inches. I don't know if I can go smaller than that, honestly the world gets really scary by that point and..." He trailed off for a moment, deciding better than to continue. But his thoughts were plain enough. Worry about not being able to stop, just getting smaller and smaller, forever. He shook his head to clear his mind a bit.

"Yeah, I'm a tough little cookie! But, like... stuff becomes awkward. I could lift a steamer trunk that weighs eighty pounds right now. And little, I could lift, like, a lego block that weighed eighty pounds. But I couldn't lift the trunk, it's just too big. Could lift the corner though... maybe flip it or something.

Haley'd gotten a guy to start talking about himself, so of course now he was never going to shut up. He started to peel his orange, the unattended scrap of paper twitching in the light breeze before tumbling against her leg.

If Haley were to pick up what Victor left unattended, she would find it to be a note.

Sorry I couldn't make you one of those dagwood subs you love so much. We have to ration out what supplies came on the truck after the rest of it got destroyed. Keep this note as a raincheck. Whenever I start getting paid I.O.U. one giant sandwich.

The handwriting was perfect. It lacked the loopy cutesiness that was often present in feminine writing, but wasn't scratchy nor were the letters too tight. Her i's were dotted with hearts, though whether this was normal or not neither Haley nor Victor would really know.

Lot's of O's, no X's. Lots of hugs but no kisses. Apparently, it was up to Victor to determine what that was supposed to mean.

PS:I'll come and sit with you when I'm done.

Haley did pick up the note that tumbled into her leg, and read it briefly as Vic talked, a smile creeping across her face. She carefully folded it up, fairly sure Vic hadn't even noticed her reading it, and tapped his knee with the corner of the note. "This fell out of your lunch bag. Got a secret admirer in the kitchen?" she grinned. "Or is this the instructions to commit your first crime, Mr. Evil Lawful."

Victor wrinkled his nose a bit at the teasing before he read the note.

"Damn it, I don't want people spendin' money on me." He muttered, leaning back to slip the note into his pocket. "I dunno what the 'Ooooo' meant, maybe ghosts, but I'd hardly call her an admirer. We're just friends."

Ooh, so defensive.

Victor's face flushed from the mental whisper, and was it just her or did his shirt seem a little big on him right now? Haley didn't have to read his mind to get a good idea of what was running through his head right now.

If Victor had super fast reflexes he could have caught the apple and looked really badass. Or if he was super-tough or had metal skin or force fields it could have just exploded on contact without him even noticing it. Maybe he could have burned it to ash with some neato laser vision eyes.

But his schtick was that he got tiny, so instead of any of that cool stuff instead he got an apple smashed against the back of his head which disoriented him enough to send him face-first into the lawn with applesauce in his hair and down his shirt collar. Whud.

Victor got to his feet, swearing softly under his breath as he wipe the back of his head, looking for the offender. Pumped up on adrenaline, embarrassment, and teenage testosterone, Victor could hear laughter coming from the tree, so he was going to have a word with said tree or it's contents. With surprising quickness he was up and into the lower branches in just a few bounds, a life of living on a farm in northern Ontario and his gymnastics training making light work of the task.

As he's climbing the tree a couple more apples rain down on him, although they are less well aimed than the initial one. There's rustling above him in the leafs as whatever is throwing them is climbing higher as well. It's not that big a tree and a regular-sized person would have trouble getting that high without branches snapping under their weight.

Victor wasn't a regular-sized person however, at least not now. As he climbed higher and higher the young man diminished in size. This slowed him down, but it was allowing him to climb higher than he would normally be able to. And since the branches were smaller and closer together as he got closer to the top, this didn't present too much of a problem.

"Unless you can fly, you might as well give up, 'cause anywhere you can go I can follow!"

"Oh yeah, wise-guy?" a voice comes from Vic's right. Turning his head he'd notice a small man, well, right now he'd seem more like a regular-sized man to Vic. What's odd though is that he seems to be standing on the underside of a branch while holding on to an apple with both hands. His face also seems kind of strange. His mouth is much too wide and his face is wrinkly without actually looking old. He's wearing a little bowler hat that somehow doesn't fall from his hat despite his state of being upside-down.

"The hell did she put in my sandwich." the tiny man repeats back at him in a mocking tone. "Get outta my tree, ya bum!" he adds and stomps up and down (down and up?) on his branch before throwing the apple at Vic. At this size it's a slightly more menacing projectile.

If Vic wasn't such a tough little bugger the apple might've very well knocked him out of the tree. But this time he wasn't being caught unaware, and his increased density allowed him to swat the projectile away more easily than the little adversary might have expected.

"Laddies first." Grabbing onto the branch above his head, Vic stomped on the one the little antagonist was standing on (under), trying to use his concentrated strength to snap it off.

Haley completely missed the first thrown apple, but the laughter? The laughter she heard, and her eyes whipped around looking for the source. Vic seemed on top of it, nimbly climbing up the tree, so she followed him with her gaze.

"Get that little fucker, Vic!" she said, closing her eyes and trying to focus in on the laughter with her telepathy with probably poor results.

As far as Haley's telepathy is concerned there's nothing in the tree except for Vic.

Meanwhile the little bugger is being bounced up and down by the shaking branch. "You-oh-uh-oh-uh ru-oh-ude thing!" he manages and claps his hands which makes the branch bend and snap back into position, launching Vic up into the air. "That'll teach ya!"

Victor's little body shot up through the top of the tree, looking very much like a squirrel being shot out of some sort of slingshot hidden in the branches. Well now he was mad, not just for the insult of the apples but for being made a fool of again. So he did what any teen boy would do when he was mad.

He did something stupid.

At the apex of the "toss", Vic's form rapidly regained his former size. Which wasn't huge compared to the other boys (and some of the girls) on campus, but with his arms windmilling and brain realizing that it was a bad idea, it really did make a lot of noise as it fell back into the tree from whence it came.

This time the snickering turns into full-blown cackling as Vic crashes through the branches that thankfully break his fall enough so he doesn't get hurt too badly (beyond his pride) when he hits the ground next to the tree.

Victor landed on his back, after taking a good hard branch to the gut and almost getting his foot caught in the fork of another. He laid there dazed and confused, body scratched and bruised, clothes a mess, and a root poking painfully into his back.

Haley's eyes opened, frustrated her TP had proven useless again, just in time to see Vic flying through the air and then crashing down through the tree. She popped up and ran over to him, getting down on her knees and leaning over him "oh my god, are you okay?!"
