I2DT: Outdoor Mobility Test Alpha R1

[Toshiro Narumi]

Tosh placed his prototype creation on the lawn. It was about a half of a foot long and shaped vaguely like a boxy flashlight.

He spoke into his tablet as he recorded video.

"My name is Toshiro Narumi and this is Project Sebastian... Note to self: I really need a better name... "

Project Clawgar the Terrible.

A better name.

"... Anyway, yadda yadda work on narration skills yadda. Prototype Version Alpha, Outdoor Mobility Test One. Commencing in 10... 9..."

He kept counting as he trained the tablet's camera on the device and loaded his custom control app. At zero, he activated the robot. Six mechanical legs spread out along its length and it rose to its feet. It first looked around, calibrating its sensors and getting a sense of its surroundings.

It began moving and promptly ran headlong into a tree, where it continued to ineffectually push against the trunk with high hopes.

[Nash Riley]

"Looks like it could use some more work." Nash said as he walked up from behind.

[Toshiro Narumi]

"I must've screwed up the pathfinding code somewhere," he sighed as he shut it down.

[Nash Riley]

"That is possible, though it could be other things too."

[Toshiro Narumi]

"Yeah, I know. It could also be that I neglected to anticipate some aspect of outdoor conditions that's throwing the sensors off," he said, sitting by the little bot and plugging a cord into it for a direct connection.

[Nash Riley]

"That too. Did you make sure everything was working before you came out here?"

[Toshiro Narumi]

"Worked in the lab yesterday."

[Nash Riley]

"Anything that might have broken or come loose?"

[Toshiro Narumi]

"Hmm... good thing to check..."

He started a diagnostic and began looking the robot over.

[Nash Riley]

"Always best to check the quick things first, just in case."

[Toshiro Narumi]

"Well shit, one of the gyroscopic sensors must've shorted... that would do it."

[Nash Riley]

"Hmmm." Nash walked closer even though it wasn't necessary, and used his powers to look at the shorted gyroscope trying to see what had happened.

[Toshiro Narumi]

There was nothing more unusual than a sensor fried due to a faulty part.

[Nash Riley]

"Getting the magic smoke back in is going to be hard." Nash smiled.

[Toshiro Narumi]

"Magic what?"

[Nash Riley]

"What? You've never heard the joke that fried electronics stop working because the magic smoke has leaked out." Nash looks at him in disbelief.

[Toshiro Narumi]

"Nope."

[Nash Riley]

"Oh well." Nash said "Do you have what you need to fix it?"

[Toshiro Narumi]

"Yeah, back in the workshop."

[Nash Riley]

"Should have figured that much. Let me know when you get it fixed and are ready to try again."

[Toshiro Narumi]

"That anxious to see the little guy walk?"

[Nash Riley]

"Mostly just bored and this seems interesting."

[Toshiro Narumi]

"Maybe I'll teach it to soft-shoe then."

[Nash Riley]

"Might as well." Nash laughed.

[Toshiro Narumi]

So it's a Soft-shoed Crab?

Tosh groaned. "Bruce just made a bad pun."

[Nash Riley]

Nash thought for a moment. "Aren't all of Bruce's puns bad." He grinned.

[Toshiro Narumi]

"Yes. Yes they are. Granted, so are most puns."

[Nash Riley]

"Most puns are bad, but some can be terrific." Nash smiled.

[Toshiro Narumi]

"A precious few," he agreed.

You know you love it.

[Nash Riley]

I didn't think he'd get it.

"Well, I'll see you later. I think I'll go get something to eat."

[Toshiro Narumi]

"See ya later man."
