Aug. 31st: Onyx's War Journal Entry #0001

After climbing the wall and keeping a low profile on the grounds, Onyx was perched in a tree holding a voice recorder.

"Day 01: Early observations. The school is well-fortified. Entering and exiting without alerting security will be difficult, ma'am. I am certain that between the advanced monitoring equipment and possible telepathic faculty, they are already aware I am on campus," Onyx says. "The students seem soft and weak, ma'am. If we were home, most would be dead or sold in a week."

She pauses and looks around for a moment.

"It is ridiculously peaceful here, ma'am," she says. "...I miss you."

With that said, she turns off the recorder and puts it into her utility belt. She'll download the file and send it to her mother from a safe location at a later time.

Nailah, attracted by the sound of a voice coming from a tree wanders over and wanders around, looking up into the tree and trying to see if she can spot anybody between the branches.

"Hey. Is there somebody up there?" she asks, part of her worried she's going to look like an idiot when she's ends up being wrong about having heard something.

Onyx drops down a branch and hooks her legs as she falls, catching herself on a lower one and swinging upside down so that Nailah can see her.

"Hello," the young girl wearing a mask and form-fitting black costume said to the sphinx-girl.

This place was a little ridiculous at times.

"Whoa!" Nailah jumps back a little, then eyes the upside-down girl. "Hi! Cool mask." she blurts out.

"Thank you, ma'am," Onyx says. politely accepting the compliment. Even though the mask was designed to be functional and was not an accessory.

Sometimes you had to let the little things go.

"No, but I'm going to be." she grins, suddenly finding herself on much more even footing with the mysterious girl and thus recovering much of her bravado.

"Excellent," Onyx says. She drops down onto the ground into a crouch and stands up.

"I'm Nailah. So you've already got experience?" she asks, her tail excitedly flicking back and forth behind her.

"Not much, ma'am. I was trained by the first Onyx," Onyx says. "I was also her assistant for the last five years."

Onyx actually looked a bit embarrassed. Sort of. The girl is very good at hiding any sort of emotional reaction.

It was actually a little off-putting.

"I really only know the basics, ma'am," Onyx says.

"I suppose that would be fine," Onyx says. "I am supposed to make allies."

Friends. Her mother told her to make friends.

"Hold still," Onyx says, bending her knees. "If you move at all this will hurt. A lot."

Nailah looks at Onyx dubiously but holds still. Except for her tail, which is still swishing around, but she figures Onyx probably isn't about to show her any tail-related judo-throws.

Onyx quickly steps forward and in one graceful motion steps around Nailah and pivots, bringing her foot around from the other side in a spinning kick. She stops her heel about a half-inch from Nailah's face.

Nailah flinches though to her credit, she doesn't mess up enough to get kicked in the face. Her heart still beats in her chest though as she stares at Onyx' boot inches from her face.

"Awesome..." she breathes out. "That was so cool."

"It is all about balance, ma'am," Onyx says, relaxing. "I am sure you could do it as well. With some practice."

"I have pretty good balance." she says, spinning around on one foot with her wings flaring out slightly, her tail keeping her balanced. It's more of a dance-twirl than a combat move but she still moves fairly gracefully.

"I am sure you will be an excellent superhero someday."

"Things might be different for you," Onyx concedes. "I did not mean to presume, ma'am. I apologize."

"Wow, you got a whole plan and everything, do you?" she asks, suddenly feeling woefully unprepared in her pipedreams.

"Benefits of having a very strict mentor, ma'am," Onyx says. "Everything is planned."

She hesitates briefly before continuing, "This is the final test. Four years here. If I succeed, I get to take over. She will retire."

"Oh wow. That's off the coast from Malaysia, right?" she says. Geography she was familiar with, even if she didn't really have a concept of life in Madripoor. "You've come a long way to be here. Though I guess I did too, now that I think about it." she chuckles.

"Yeah. Phoenix, Arizona. Not as many trees there either. Way too warm there though in the summer, especially when you always gotta wear fur boots."

"On the upside, I'm rarely cold and I don't have to shave my legs." she grins. Not that that's really an appropriate topic to randomly bring up with people you've just met, but her forwardness is mostly just covering up for the fact that she was home-schooled and interacting with people not something she's particularly used to.
