Sept 1st - Convocation

The opening ceremony is held in the open space of the gardens. A small stage has been set up with a red and gold banner hanging above it depicting the school's seal and motto. Mutatis Mutandis, loosely meaning 'The things that needed to be changed, have been'. There's enough space on the lawn to hold all the students and a long table on one side is holding refreshments and finger-food. The faculty is assembled on the stage.

The convocation is officially opened by Miss Minamida stepping forward.

"It's my honor to welcome you all and I thank you for gathering here today. My name is Ashlie Minamida and it is with great pleasure that I introduce to you, Professor Charles Xavier, whose name this University carries and who was instrumental in creating not just this place but the very idea that brings us together here today and who has been gracious enough to trust me to be the Head-Mistress of his new school."

She steps to the side with a small bow and politely applauds the man moving his wheelchair up to the center of the stage.

Charles Xavier looks old and a little worn out, but his voice carries across the grounds easily and his ability to speak is as strong as it has always been. "The reason why were are here today, my fellow mutants, is the dream of not just improving ourselves but all human endeavor. We above all have a responsibility to set an example. To inspire others to reach for the stars and that is why you are here today. I have always hoped to teach others the importance of striving to make a difference in the world and as we celebrate the differences that make all of us unique I urge you to remember the common past we share with all of mankind. You have been given a chance to be someone extraordinary and this school's goal is it to provide you with everything you need to become the best you could possibly be.

It is up to you to seize that opportunity and find your passion, your own fulfillment as I have found mine in teaching bright young minds like yours. It is now up to you to step forward and serve humanity, and in so doing, serve yourself. I have faith in all of you. I look down at your faces now, from this stage, and I see enthusiasm, purpose, vigor, and curiosity. I know that you can all do what you set out to do. So I urge you today, on the opening of the University, make this school's first class a memorable one. Make this inaugural student body one that will be remembered forever in the history of the school.

Make yourselves into the stuff of your dreams. Then share that dream with the world, enriching the world, and yourself. Congratulations, to the first class of the Xavier University. I wish you well this year, and envy the good times you will have. Now we've had enough with speeches, there are refreshments to be had. Please, feel free to go out and enjoy them. Take a moment to meet your classmates, and some of the faculty."

Xavier ends his speech to polite but enthusiastic applause. As the sun slowly moves towards the horizon lights illuminate the gardens and the crowd begins to break up into groups as people move towards the refreshments. There's beer, juice, and wine to be had, and plenty of space for people to mingle.

Ashlie accompanies Charles Xavier as he maneuvers his chair down from the stage, leaning in to quietly talk to him for a moment before nodding and looking over the gathered crowd, waiting in case someone wishes to talk to her or the Professor.

Michaela claps politely and nods respectfully to the Professor before heading over to the refreshments. "The more things change," she mumbled quietly.

Tereza seems a little on the conflicted side, but she still claps politely along with the rest of the crowd. She heads off to one side, avoiding the refreshments table for now.

Samantha got there early, managing to be nearly up front and paying rapt attention when the professor was on stage. As his speech ends, she claps enthusiastically.

A new face had until then remained seated, looking alternately incredibly bored by and too cool for the whole thing. He finally got up to grab some chow before he gasped, grabbed his chest, and fell back into his seat.

No god damnit I have a couple more hours!

He rummaged through his pockets and just started to panic when he found what he was after. He unwrapped the foil from a strange looking black snack bar and bit into it. He visibly relaxed despite the disgusted look on his face.

Haley watched the Professor with rapt attention, and applauded loudly as he left the stage. If he could deal with telepathy, maybe she had some hope too. After the speeches she made her way towards the food, got a comically large portion of basically everything she could fit on a plate, and lifted up a can of Sprite with her TK so she could carry her plate with two hands. Not quite sure where to go mingle she stood for a moment away from the food and looked around for anyone she might know.

Nailah had listened to the speech and applauded, but then drifted over to the snacks and is munching on a couple pigs in a blanket while grabbing a bottle of beer. She futzes with it for a while until she manages to hook a claw under it and pull of the cap with a triumphant grin and takes a victory-sip.

Speaking of masks, Onyx was at the convocation. She was lurking in the back during most of the speech and now that it was over she was just sort of loitering, not sure of what to do. She took a glass of punch and sniffed it. Seemingly satisfied, she took a small taste and paused before continuing to drink normally.
