Dismantling

In the little side garage off the carpark, Tereza is currently leafing through a book, comparing the diagrams in it to the beaten up motorcycle that leans hard on its kickstand in front of her. She frowns and then sets the book aside, starting to take the parts off the bike.

There was the sound of rapid breath intaking behind her. "Be a little delicate with that one; he looks old."

Tereza takes a deep sniff, trying to pick up the scent of the newcomer over the scent of old bike parts. "Most of the parts on this are junk."

"That's a bit harsh, wouldn't you say? A little TLC, and I bet you can get it up and running again."

"That's the general plan, but I'm probably going to have to replace some of it. It's sort of a long term project." She frowns at a particularly stubborn bolt.

"Poor guy looks like no one's really given him the attention he needs in...a long...time," Will blinked, his skin rippling gray for a moment.

"You talking about the bike or this bolt in particular?" She grunts, leveraging against the bolt harder.

"The bike in general, I think. It's a shame to see anything get busted up like this."

"On the other hand, if it wasn't busted up like this, I would never have been able to afford it, so there are trade-offs." The bolt finally gives and she takes the part off.

Will winced a little bit.

"I suppose that's true. Is this your first cycle, or have you had experience?"

"Trinity and I stole a couple of bikes in Germany, so I've ridden before, but this will be the first bike I've owned."

"Ah, that makes him pretty special, then," Will smiled. "I've never had one myself -- I had a moped, but something tells me that's a different genre, entirely."

"Mopeds have their place, like pop music." She eyes the part for a bit and compares it to the diagrams in the book.

"And just where would that place be?" Will smiled.

"Eating the dust of the motorcycles and the classic rock, of course." She says, looking back at him with a smile.

"Yes, heaven forbid you get all popular, with people liking you and whatnot. That's just selling out, right?" he chuckled.

"You gotta be doing it for the love of the music, man," she says with a suppressed chuckle.

"What kind of music is your band going to play, anyway? I heard that you found yourself someone to beat the skins."

"I'm not sure. I've been letting Sam handle that. Obviously, I have my own preferences, but I'm really not sure she's decided yet."

"And what are your preferences? Barbershop? Disco? Baroque counterpoint?"

"I'm definitely more of a hard or classic rock girl."

"Definitely someone after my own heart, then. It's hard to go wrong with the classics...assuming the classics are the same here as they were over there."

"Just a billion?" She goes back to wrestling parts off the bike frame.

"Yeah, if the Beatles or Stones or Moppets didn't exist here, I could suddenly become quote super creative unquote."

"As far as I can tell, most of the stuff's the same, just a few decades earlier.

Everyone's BORN all out of wonk, but that is what it is."

"I guess. It's just...weird.

Sam's a college kid, Sara's a mil...er, Lt. Van Buren's older... just all out of wonk. I'll be glad when the military is off campus."

"Well, I've got another 'session' in about an hour. I'll try to get them whatever they need to know so they can get out," Will sighed.

"Yeah, don't hold your breath," Will sighed. "They're more interested in what the stuff is doing to me, and what the possible repercussions are if it's left here, than actually making sure I'm better."

He walked over and leaned one hand on the seat of the bike. "They still want the me from before I came here, and I'm just not fully that person anymore."

"What do you want?"

Will shrugged. "I don't know. It used to be a lot simpler, before Sam opened my mind. Easier to be this guy," he said, patting the seat of the motorcycle. "A clear purpose, a full tank of gas, a pretty girl wrapped around your frame... sometimes, life's too complicated."

"I suppose I could," he said, taking his hand off the engine.

"I suppose I don't really want that, though, do I? It'd be throwing away who I am just to try to please others. And not even all others. Plus, it'd be....running away. I don't like the idea of running away.

I'm sure I'll be fine in a couple days when everyone leaves and things slowly trickle back to normal...just, you know. Bad memories. Life being complex, when I want it to be simple."

Tereza nods, "I can certainly understand the 'wanting things to be simple' part." She gets up and grabs another wrench, offering it to him. "When that gets to be too much, I try to focus on things that *are* simple."

Will took the wrench, and bent down to the other side of the bike.

"You've had much room for simple the past few months?"
