The Punk and the Godfather

The Estate's meticulously kept gardens, including a hedgemaze that students have occasionally described as "sadistic" and a sizable rose garden. Benches in shaded spots are plentiful, and the gardens are popular to study in on pleasant days. The nearby stables are still maintained with a number of well-heeled equines.

The Punk and the Godfather

Late at night, there is an unholy racket sounding from the garage. From a distance, it seems to just be an engine revving. Not a particularly powerful engine, mind you. A gearhead might pinpoint it at just under 200cc.

Will was wandering the grounds at night -- the things you do when sleep isn't an issue and your roommate is an alien invader! -- when she heard the strange sounds coming from the garage.

"Who on earth is racing at this time of night?"

She headed in that general direction.

The revving continues unabated.

Curiously, none of the lights are on in the garage. It's definitely coming from inside, though.

As soon as the door opens, the revving stops. Once Will flicks the lights on, he sees something out of place. A bright red vintage Vespa, oddly positioned to be directly across from the old motorcycle Tereza had been working on.

Or at least the person they'd thought was Tereza.

As Will turns up the volume a bit, there's a song that perhaps she recognizes.

"Your fingernails go dragging down the wall
Be careful darling you might fall
I want you
I woke up and one of us was crying
I want you
You said 'Young man I do believe you're dying'
I want you
If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days
I want you
You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways
I want you
Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget
I want you."

Looking at the scooter, it's obvious that it's someone's pride and joy. It might be a bit old, but it's been well cared for. In fact, other than a questionable taste in radio stations, there seems to be nothing wrong with it.

Then again, there is a sizable skidmark on the garage floor leading from a presently unoccupied area.

The garage has areas marked out with paint on the floor, to keep everyone's pet projects and vehicles separate. The skidmark leads back to spot number 9, which the clipboard hung on the wall indicates is currently occupied by "Emilie."

Will does anthropomorphize inanimate objects. It's kind of her schtick.

Then again, her schtick was also "things belong in their proper place". That was an important part of the schtick! And so, she fought with the scooter, dragging it back towards it's place.

"Busted wheel assembly, perhaps? Someone better take that apart and check it out."

Aha! My suspicions were correct; something is strange and unusual about this moped; some sort of rudimentary mechanical intelligence is at place here. This is an unusual and noteworthy development, and worth keeping record thereof.

"Wooooah!"

Will put her hands on the handlebars, trying to wrest some control over the moped from the beast itself. "Mopeds are driven, they do not drive themselves!"

You: Let's go for the brakes and stop this before it gets out into dangerous territory.

Will, an intellectual: When you're trying to break a wild animal, you let it tire itself out, first.

With that in mind, Will tried to gun the engine, pointing it towards that garage door and clinging on for dear life, her legs clamping hard on the bike to keep from getting thrown off.

And so it is that a scooter came zipping out of the garage making as thunderous a noise as just shy of 200ccs can muster.

Soon after emerging, Will can feel the Vespa's front wheel starting to pull up. Almost as if it's trying to pop a wheelie.
